In "Rumor Mill," we share the hard to buy rumors that don't come from reliable sources like the trades, but are still more believable (just) than what you might find on Reddit.
That Hashtag Show is reporting that Christopher Daniel Barnes is in advanced talks to join the cast of Sony's upcoming Into the Spider-Verse sequel. He is expected to reprise his role as the '90s Peter Parker from the fan-favorite Spider-Man: The Animated Series, which ran from 1994 to 1998.
They add that Barnes' Spidey isn't expected to play a major role, but will make a short cameo at some point in the film - appearing with his classic look from the '90s cartoon series intact and mashed together with the unique stylization of the Spider-Verse sequel - before showing up again for the sure-to-be action-packed finale.
He's not the only one that could show up, either, as THS notes that several other Spiders from a variety of different Spider-Man media will also appear. Talks with those actors are said to be still ongoing, so the final roster is yet to be determined, although it's hard to imagine there'd be any Spider-Man that would refuse the opportunity to join the Academy Award-winning franchise.
While THS does have a relatively decent track record when it comes to casting scoops, it's best to classify this one as a rumor for now. Until Sony makes an official cast announcement, nothing about the sequel - especially any surprise cameos - will likely see the light of day before the premiere.
The currently untitled sequel to 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel is set to swing into theaters on October 7, 2022.
