SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE Producers Confirm They're Willing To Delay Threequel If They Have To

With rumors continuing to swirl that a delay for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is inevitable, the movie's producers have now confirmed that, if they have no other choice, the release date will shift.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has taken Sony to new heights at the box office when it comes to the studio's animated offerings, while the sequel has been every bit as critically acclaimed as its predecessor.

However, in recent weeks, we've seen claims of a less-than-ideal working environment for those working on the movie. It's been said that up to 100 animators quit the project during production, with producer Phil Lord's quest for perfection leading to more than a few issues behind the scenes.

The gist was that the team who brought Across the Spider-Verse to our screens were overworked, though Amy Pascal's response to that was simply, "Welcome to making a movie."

This report has also led to speculation next March's Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse might be delayed. We've long suspected this could be the case, especially with cast members saying they hadn't recorded any dialogue and a certain level of coyness from the creative team during the press tour.

During an interview with ComicBook.com (via Toonado.com), Lord and Chris Miller weighed in on the chances of a release date delay.

"I would say that just like we're going to take the time necessary to make Beyond the Spider-Verse great," Lord said before Miller added, "And we won't back into a release date that doesn't fit."

So, yeah, there's no way we're seeing that movie next year.

We've already heard rumblings it could be pushed back to 2025 or even 2026, so the wait for the conclusion to Miles Morales' story promises to be quite a bit longer than we anticipated.

We're assuming the release date hasn't been officially changed in an effort to avoid bad press that has any sort of impact on box office takings. Some moviegoers, for example, may be reluctant to watch this middle chapter if they know it's going to be years before the final part follows.

For now, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled for a March 29, 2024 release.

What?!
People having a problem with their boss asking for perfection? The nerve of them!
I respect people that quit their job, if they don’t like the job or the people they work with/for. It means they have options. Many people can’t because they don’t have options and still need to eat.

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - As long as they are paid for hours worked I see no problem with the expectations
to work long hours. It happens at start ups. It happens in the corporate world. It happens with entrepreneurs. It happens with farmers. It happened throughout history.

The fact is, some jobs require long hours. If you have a deadline to meet and there is a lot of work to do, we’ll someone has to do it.

If you don’t like it leave. I had a job where I traveled all over the world, for weeks at a time, launching new work sites for the company I worked for. I worked 70-80 hour weeks, in foreign counties, oftentimes working overnights, and away from my family the whole time. Did it for 5 years. I was compensated well. Then when my wife and I decided we wanted a family, I moved out of that role.

Hard work sometimes requires lots of hours.

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - do you think this is true for the VFX artists and their complaints as well?

@Itwasme - Do you think it’s true? I think what I said. Sometimes you have no choice in life and you do what you got to do to feed your family. If you have options in life then move on.

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - to me these are very similar situations, but the sentiment here seems to be very different. Wildly different actually. So I was asking of you felt the same about the VFX artists as these animators.

Of course the people who don't work as hard as those below them don't see any issues. Maybe if Pascal, Lord and Miller did some actual work they would sing a different tune

I watched this last weekend. Good movie but it gets major points off for that ending.

Spoilers below...

How are you going to end on a 3rd act. Especially considering how long that 1st. Keep in mind that 1st act doesn't end until he follows Gwen in the portal.

A movie needs a conclusion. You can't tell a story and manipulate your audience to wait 3 years for a conclusion to THIS movie. Lazy ass cliffhanger made this movie go from a 9/10 to like a 7.5, I even knew it was getting split into 2 and I still thought they way they did it was horrible. This movie is not a complete movie experience. Really really disappointed by it.

Nothing new.

Listen, I get your point, but this films very different than Empire. Empire concludes its emotional story. This movie doesn't have a 3rd act. THe 3rd act for empire was "rescue my friends", which is concluded and leaves a cliffhanger. The 3rd act for this film was "save my dad" essentially, and it just stops before the climax, this movie is missing a big chunk of its 3rd act.

There's a lot to like in this film, the art, the acting, the writing, the meta awareness. It really has all the elements of a masterpiece film but it literally drops its 3rd act and treats it as a cliffhanger.

@EgoEgor - Man, armchair screenwriters... Movies typically end on a third act, which is, you know, the end. And the First Act wasn't long at all. It was 20 minutes. It ended when Gwen was invited into the Spider Society and left her dad. Literally crossing the threshold, aka the portal.
I think your problem is that you think Miles was the protagonist, which isn't true. Miles doesn't really want anything until the end of the movie, where he decides to go home to save his dad. This is Gwen's story. The movie started with her and ended with her and told a complete character arc inbetween. And on the side it opened up a new overarching storyline for Miles that's going to take center stage in Beyond. It's a cliffhanger, man. Not exactly a brand new concept. And we knew there would be one, since they literally announced this movie and Beyond as "part1 and part 2".

I don't know why audiences get worse and worse at keeping their expectations in check, but I wish they wouldn't blame their shortcomings on the movie.

@EgoEgor - "Empire concludes its emotional story."

So does Across the Spider-Verse. It's about Gwen finding her band. AKA getting over the loss of her Peter and allowing herself to get close to people again. Including her dad, Miles and the Spiders who stand with her. It's a beautiful storyline.

@Drace24 -

I'm not trying to lecture here or tell people how a story should. At the end of the day story is this nebulous thing that effects all of us differently. All I can attest to is to what I personally think is a complete story. What you call "shortcomings" are just opinions at the end of the day.

As for my opinion; I liked Gwen in this story, she was had a great arc; but she wasn't the protagonist. You can certainly make a case that she has the character arc in this film. But I just felt Miles was the protagonist; he's the one who makes them big leap into leaving his comfortable world, he's the one who we see enter the multiverse portal(literally see him cross threshold), he's the one who has all the emotional reveals.

The 3rd act just felt incomplete to me because it doesn't resolve a moment they sit up before, which was that bridge scene between Miles and his father. His lack of honesty was hurting each other, it almost felt like his Dad was telling him his deepest thoughts, it was just such a great scene and I enjoyed so much that to not see that set up payoff made the movie feel incomplete. They gave that moment to Gwen, which never felt as impactful because of that bridge scene, it should've been Miles'. And it might well be in the 3rd film, but i don't feel its a "shortcoming" on my part to feel that way. They made the creative choice to tell incomplete in the hopes they'll have a great conclusion, but at the end of the day that incomplete feeling is there and ultimately hurts my enjoyment, but you're free to feel different. There's a lot to like in this movie, so don't let my criticism seem like I'm trying to kick the film, I'm just sharing how I felt about it which is a feeling that I haven't heard expressed here, that's all.

"So does Across the Spider-Verse. It's about Gwen finding her band"

I get you, her character arc was well done, but I just felt Miles' setup arc wasn't resolved enough for me. He was the emotional perspective. And it will probably be resolved in the 3rd film, but then again I might not like that film as much as I did before the ending.

No one here has a say if they do or don't.

This is just nonsense.

I would normally say another year wouldn't matter for a sequel, but I think they lose money the longer this takes. The second movie has no ending and won't be rewatched like the first one. I don't think interest will grow or even maintain. I think interest will drop the longer it takes.

Nothing is going to be done until the writer strike is over. Plus, animators are staying away from this mess.
