On the surface, it may be hard to figure out why Sony Pictures would want to make a Madame Web movie. The character is blind, frail, unable to get out of a chair that keeps her alive, and has only ever really been a relatively unimportant supporting character in Spider-Man's world.
Despite all of that, there's no denying that Madame Web does have potential. In recent years, Marvel Comics has introduced a younger version of the character - a former Spider-Woman called Julia Carpenter - while her connections to the Multiverse could prove crucial for future movies.
Based on what we've seen from Venom and Morbius, Cassandra Webb being reinvented in some way is inevitable. This is evident from the news Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson is in talks to join the movie, and she now appears to have confirmed her casting on Instagram. As you can see, the actress took to the social media website to share a web emoji, so we're guessing the deal is done.
S.J. Clarkson is directing Madame Web from a script by the writing team behind Morbius. There's no word on a release date, though we'd bank on production beginning sometime this year.
Are you excited to see Johnson's take on the character?
