This...probably isn't the reaction to Madame Web that Sony Pictures was hoping for.
The first trailer for the movie was released yesterday and, for the most part, it's drawn a negative reaction from fans. Like Morbius and Venom, it feels very much like a blockbuster made in the 2000s, a somewhat ironic turn of events given that Madame Web is set during that period.
You can read our full breakdown of the footage here, but we're guessing most of you won't be surprised to learn that a certain line in the trailer has become the subject of ridicule.
We are, of course, referring to, "He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died." It's a piece of exposition said by Dakota Johnson's Cassandra Webb as a means of better explaining her connection to the villainous Ezekiel Sims.
However, for whatever reason, it was delivered clunkily and just sounds dumb. That's an assessment many people seem to agree with because, as you can see below, the line has become a meme and is being mocked by fans Sony had probably hoped would instead be sharing their excitement for the movie.
Will Madame Web and this line be the next Morbius and "It's Morbin' Time"? We'll have to wait and see.
"'Meanwhile, in another universe...'" the synopsis begins, "In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines."
"The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present."
SJ Clarkson directors from a screenplay she wrote with Claire Parker. Confirmed cast members include Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott.
We believe the movie is still dated for February 16, 2024, in the U.S., but the trailers only say "Coming Soon" (it swings into UK cinemas on February 14).
