Marc Webb Explains THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN End-Credits Scene Spoilers

The director states his reasoning behind the confusing end-credits scene, while actor Rhys Ifans offers a more concrete clue on the identity of the shadowy figure and also reveals that he's not signed-up for more Spidey films.

Marc Webb, when asked if the shadowy figure at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man is indeed Norman Osborn:
Marc Webb: "There is a silhouette as Peter enters Oscorp on a display, which reads our founder, Norman Osborn. And there is a back-story which I will not reveal. We wanted to convey that there were more forces at work than you may have initially thought. That's all I can say about that. But I invite speculation. I think it's very fun and interesting to listen to."

Webb goes on to say that the shadowy figure may not necessarily be the main villain in the next installment but that he will play a role.

Dr. Connors actor Rhys Ifans on that same end-credits scene:
Rhys Ifans: Connors is sent to an asylum, a high-security asylum, as you would be if you threw police towers across the Brooklyn Bridge. And he's visited by, shall we say, a representative from Oscorp. How he gets into that cell and how he leaves that cell without the guards knowing? We have yet to find out."

Ifans goes on to say the he isn't signed up for more Spider-Man films but and that "nothing is written in stone" but he was happy to see that his character was alive at the end of the film.

I've seen theories about the identity of the shadowy figure ranging from Green Goblin, to Hobgoblin, Mysterio, Chameleon and even Richard Parker. Initially, I thought Connors was simply speaking to a subliminal aspect of the Lizard as he was shown doing earlier in the film. But it appears my theory that it was simply a figment of Curt Connors' imagination is now proven false with the above reveal from Ifans. Who exactly was that man and how did he disappear so quickly inside of a jail cell of all things? Looks like we'll have to wait a while longer for answers.

The Amazing Spider-Man is an upcoming American superhero film directed by Marc Webb, based on the comic book of the same name and starring Andrew Garfield as the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. It is the fourth Columbia Pictures film that portrays Spider-Man in film and is a reboot of the film series that stars the superhero. The cast includes Garfield as Peter Parker and his alter ego, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors. The film will portray Parker as his super powers are evolving in high school.

The film's development began simultaneously with Sony announcing the cancellation of Spider-Man 4. Opting for a reboot with the same production team rather than another sequel, the studio announced a July 2012 release date for what was now titled The Amazing Spider-Man. James Vanderbilt was hired to write the script while Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves helped fine-tune the script. Filming started in December 2010 in Los Angeles before moving to New York City with the help of RED Epic camera. The film entered post-production in April 2011.

Sony Entertainment has focused its marketing campaign with a promotional website with released images, 2 theatrical trailers, a prologue screening in certain cities and a video game tie-in being developed by Beenox among other products. The Amazing Spider-Man is scheduled to be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on July 3, 2012. A sequel of the film is being planned for release in 2014 with James Vanderbilt hired to again write the screenplay.

Hmm...I don't exactly remember if the silhouetted hologram in the OsCorp building can fit for the shadowy figure, but, if it's Norman Osborn...

Interesting, Michael Massee can fairly fit him, IMO.

I thought it was more important that Osborn mentioned Peters father. Maybe the entire struggle with Osborn in future sequels is that he was responsible for Peter's parents' death. That's why he goes after Osborn which leads to Gwen's death.

Just my other speculations:

1. Quentin Beck - Well, they certainly have to alter his position and character if it really is him; but, the way he disappears among the rumbling thunder...yeah, you get it.

2. Albert Malik - Perhaps, they keep him in the universe, sans the Red Skull identity. If the man's related to/know of the Parkers' death, who knows he's the murderer.

3. Edward Brock, Sr. - Now, someone suggested that Richard may be working on the Symbiote (a la Ultimate Spider-Man), that's why he fled, etc., etc., and if so, I think...why can't the elder Brock be in it, too?

4. Connors' Imagination - Like what THEGODDAMNDEADPOOL said. I doubt it's his Lizard subconscious, so...his imagination of who?

I think Massee could fit as Chameleon, too, actually. I don't know. Let the speculations begin!

Norman, Electro, Mystero, or the masculine form of Madame Web, trololool!
superotherside

I'd say it's Mysterio aka Quentin Beck. This would make sense for a few reasons:

1. For this series I doubt it would be Electro as he would be obviously mutated and would have to have some sort of story. Parker and Connors are the first to be mutated by cross species genetics in this universe...

2. Reason 2 relates to reason 1. While the Electro which is pure energy could easily get into the cell without anyone noticing (going though wires), Mysterio wouldn't need super powers. He just uses extremely smart tricks. Which would make sense for a side villain in the sequel, as it would play up Peter Parkers smartness. Plus since he is a relativity small villain there would be easily room for another.

What do you guys think?

Definitely Goblin in the next one.
Norman turns into Goblin. kills Gwen at the bridge. Peter is heartbroken.
Next one. He meets MJ, he discovers what it's like to love again. He meets Eddie Brock.
That's how I think it'll most likely play out, but I personally want some Kingpin or Silver Sable big screen love to happen. It would make sense and play in well with what's been established so far in the first film.

TheGambitFreak - 7/4/2012, 7:08 AM
Aside from the mere obvious aspects, It makes clear sense for it to be Norman... Seeing as how this reboot is mainly streamed from the Ultimate Universe, it would make sense that Norman is concerned about Connors' giving away secrets about Richard to his son. That is to say if they follow the comics and Richard and Eddie Brock's dad worked together as scientists (For Oscorp) and Osborn doesn't want Richard's scientifical finding to fall into the hands of Pete (Or does he want Peter to find outso he can cure himself of his dying condition...). Time will tell.

I'd say this was probably the worst after/mid credits scene in any CBM yet. It had been Green Lantern, but at least that paid some fan service even if it was completely out of character. This was just...rubbish! This isn't a comic book where we can pick up the next issue in a week and find out what's going on. I get that it was just a tease and some mystery is a good thing, but give people a BIT more to go on for God's sake! The dialog was also moronic and it just cut away at a really strange point. Everyone in the cinema where I watched it groaned.

TheGambitFreak - 7/4/2012, 7:11 AM
@superotherside Not intentionally being a dick, but Electricity has nothing to do with Animal/Human Biological splicing. They can just say he's a screw-up of Oscorp's past test subjects in their electrical field. Then again, I'm sure it won't be Electro.

TheGambitFreak - 7/4/2012, 7:14 AM
@Ror Same here. People boo'd when there was no other post-credits scene. Maybe Avengers just has me spoiled to hell, but yeah, this was hella weak.

theInvincibleMexiMan - 7/4/2012, 7:21 AM
I kinda dont want Green Goblin in this series, just because we've already seen him done before. And I'm probly in the minority on this one...
but DONT kill off Gwen, its not necessary to this series of movies and it'd be too much to do for one movie. Introduce MJ maybe but dont kill Gwen.
TheGambitFreak
TheGambitFreak - 7/4/2012, 7:22 AM
@RedHood89 Not 'till rights revert back to Marvel Studios... If your going to use Morbius, you abso-freaking-lutely have to have Blade. Besides, in the Amazing Spider-Man Video Game, Morbius is featured, and considering the roster of other villains used within the game, I can 99% guarantee you that they will not use any of those characters on the game, in the future films.
Jolt17

The more I observe Massee's face, the more I think he actually looks like Norman. Just give him that classic Osborn hair style (whatever you call it), and he can be great, I believe. Make him so!
Jolt17
Jolt17 - 7/4/2012, 7:27 AM
The Man in the Shadows has quite a messy hair...but since it's stated that Osborn is sick, I think it makes sense for him to look so untidy. Just how he can leave the cell...but yeah, everything else makes it plausible for him to be this guy, people.

If it's really him, though, that means he won't be the main villain in the sequel, as Webb said...perhaps, he doesn't become the Goblin, but is the founder and funder of the Sinister Six!? I like that idea.
PeterParker1991
PeterParker1991 - 7/4/2012, 7:28 AM
The mysterious dude in the after credits scene... Quentin Beck. That's my theory, because who else could just disappear like that? Makes sense, and Mysterio would be an awesome choice of villain for the Spectacular Spiderman

Guy Pearce for Norman Osborn
JoeMomma29
JoeMomma29 - 7/4/2012, 7:48 AM
It is Mysterio just given the fact that Mysterio can teleport or use his special effects to disappear. But I have to agree with the comment that people groaned when they ran that mid credits. It was a big let down, also I looked for easter eggs but really could not find any

On a side note I forgot to add I was extremely happy to see Connors live! That is where Raimi failed big time killing off Green Goblin, Doc Oct , etc... For instance in Nolan's Batman (I am not comparing Marvel and DC) it was great seeing Scarecrow in the second movie and he should be in the third movie as well. It sucked when Tim Burton killed off the Joker and Penquin those are iconic baddies that could have made cameos. Is that not what us Fan Boys want and go crazy over for?
Jolt17
Jolt17 - 7/4/2012, 7:59 AM
Featuring a movie with Sinister Six has always been my dream...and the Goblin is not a part of it; I've always thought Osborn will be better as the man behind it all.

My line-up:
- Chameleon
- Doctor Octopus
- Shocker
- Vulture
- Sandman
- Mysterio, or Kraven

Yeah, my idea is mostly based on Spectacular Spider-Man, where Otto is originally an OsCorp employee, Sandman and Shocker are mere henchmen, et cetera. Make Goblin as a mysterious threat - yeah, not necessarily in the second film - while Osborn secretly is involved in the criminal underworld...maybe involve that twist where Harry is suspected as the real Goblin, et cetera.

Just my hopeful idea; but point is, I'd love to see Osborn appearing as a background character first, rather than directly as the Goblin. In this franchise, at least.

WHAT A CRAP MOVIE!!!!! SOOOOO much cheesy drama, stupid little quirky things. And what the hell was up with the music scoring? What little of action fight scenes were great. It was more of a drama with some action than a action movie. I was so bored for 2 1/2 hrs!!!!
