In a recent interview, Moonfall director Roland Emmerich bemoaned the state of modern filmmaking, blaming major studio blockbusters - superhero movies, in particular - for "ruining our industry" with their perceived lack of originality. Now, the "Master of Disaster" is at it again.
Moonfall has not been performing very well at the box office, and Emmerich was asked the challenges of releasing non IP-driven movies in the current climate while chatting to Discussing Film.
"Well, it gets harder and harder. I'm really not very happy about that. How many superhero movies can you make? They're making like, 7 or 8 Spider-Man [films]? It's just very boring for me, as a filmmaker. You don't want to keep making the same movies over and over," said the filmmaker, who has been making the same movie over and over for 30 years.
In all seriousness... they've made 9 Spider-Man films.
This is not the first time Emmerich has taken aim at the genre, and even said that he likes to watch Marvel movies "on planes in order to fall asleep" in a previous interview. He's obviously entitled to his opinion, but some might say his comments are a tad hypocritical. Others might suggest that they demonstrate a staggering lack of self awareness.
What do you guys make of Emmerich's take on superhero movies? Do you think he has a point? Be sure to let us know in the usual place.
