Marvel Studios' visual development supervisor Ian Joyner recently shared some early concept art for his take on The Lizard which suggested that the Sony Pictures was originally planning to change-up the villain's appearance for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Now, Joyner has taken to Instagram to give us another look at this comic-accurate take on Dr. Curt Connors.

This artwork spotlights a more monstrous-looking Lizard roaring into action in his signature white lab-coat and purple pants.

Fans weren't overly pleased with Lizard's design in The Amazing Spider-Man, and it was a little disappointing to see the character looking pretty much identical when he was reintroduced in No Way Home. Unfortunately, it wouldn't have made much sense to alter his look for the threequel since he, along with his fellow Multiversal villains, were plucked from realities we were already familiar with from previous movies.

Of course, they could simply have implied that his condition worsened after another mutation!

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now available on Digital, and is set to arrive on physical platforms on April 12. Have you re-watched the movie yet?

It makes sense. Alter his appearance and it'd confuse audiences into thinking it must be a different version of the character. That's also why they had electro start out in his blue form then had a scene explaining why he looked different. Could've done something similar to lizard, but you could say that about a lot of how they handled him anyway.

@Origame - It'd have been one thing if Rhys Ifans could actually have been on set, I'm sure we'd have seen him in human form just as much as some of the others, if not a bit less. And in that case, changing the Lizard design would have been much easier. But, yeah, since he had to be Lizard the whole movie, changing the design would have made some people not make the connection that it's the same character.

@Origame - but Electro was far better looking and less awkward too. Even though there was mention of the comb over, they couldn’t explain it like they did his power; they didn’t even acknowledge the absence of his awkwardness which, after a lifetime, doesn’t go away in minutes no matter how confident one is. They could’ve explained lizard the same way. This universe changes people; maybe it was the infinity stones

@ager - I'm talking about the main look. We still got blue electro here. His comb over wasn't his main look in the movie.

Besides, as dumb as it was tasm2 did show the transformation fixing the gap in his teeth. So it's reasonable to say it would also help stimulate his hair follicles. And he got pretty confident by the end of the movie.

Glad they didn't use it. Was bad enough the completely changed Electro.

Man, I really wish they would have gone for this. Have the Lizard come through looking like the ASM1 design, then have Connors escape to "perfect" his condition in the new world so he doesn't get killed when he returns. Have Connors gone for a while and return looking like this.

Would have been cool.

Truly don't understand. Everyone else besides he and sandman got an upgrade/alteration

It makes sense not to use this version even if it looks better. It would have confused people because it was not consistent with the Amazing Spiderman version. Especially since he spends 99% of screentime in that form in No Way Home.

@Forthas - That’s exactly what I thought too. I love this other design (and I really don’t like the asm version) but I feel like it would have made it feel less like the same character. Although it worked with electro so what do I know 🙃

@DenimChicken - Yeah but you saw electro before he was electro in ASM2 so it is easy to make the connection when you see him without the blue electric skin.

They can just use that new design for a future Tom Holland Spiderman film!

@Forthas - I hope so! He’s such a cool villain. And I feel like there could be more to explore there. Although when he goes to college and meets “Dr Conners” he might be a little suspicious. Ha

Those look WAY better but if you are doing a multiverse movie the character should look like he did in his respective franchise. So even though I would have loved to see this in live-action the ASM accurate one was the way to go.

It looks great but wouldn't fit the narrative of it being Garfields spiderverse version of lizard

I’ll never understand why a director opts out of great concept art. Lizard and Sandman were easily the worst parts of the film and the old footage they recycled from past films they were in stick out so bad.

I they ever bring Lizard back (don't know why they would, but they could) I hope they let him mutate into this design. I love the ASM design but this is just closer to the comic book version I prefer.
Maybe they could bring Lizard back in the Kraven movie or one of the other Spider-Man spin-offs Sony's got planned.

He was useless in the movie but this would have made him somewhat more interesting. The movie suggests that Connors was plucked from his world after the events of TASM so an easy explanation for the change of appearance would be that he further developed his formula.

But in the end, they wanted to keep the familiarity so I get it.

It's so painful to see how much they considered doing with him only to do so little.
