Spider-Man: No Way Home has proven itself an unstoppable force at the North American box office since being released on December 17, but it was cut down to size this Martin Luther King holiday weekend by Scream. That movie earned $3.5 million during Thursday evening previews, later grossing $13.3 million on Friday with an estimated $31.5 million over three days and $36 million over four.
Scream received a B+ CinemaScore, tying it with 1997's Scream 2 as the highest grade for the horror franchise. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie sits at a healthy 76% based on 188 reviews.
As for Spider-Man: No Way Home, that's expected to have earned a total of $705 million by the end of Monday to become the fourth-highest grossing movie at the domestic box office (topping Black Panther's $700 million). As for this weekend, the threequel's estimated three-day haul is $21.4 million for a four day total of $26.75 million.
There's not much to report elsewhere, but two noteworthy flops continue to, well, flop. Simon Kinberg's The 355 has earned only $8.9 million over two weeks, while The Matrix Resurrections has grossed a lowly $36.08 million over four weekends. It may be available on HBO Max at no extra charge of subscribers, but that's an abysmal result.
Uncharted is the next big blockbuster of 2022, but it definitely appears the box office is bouncing back after a difficult couple of years (and in the midst of a new COVID variant to boot).
