Earlier this month, producer Amy Pascal made Spidey fans very happy when she revealed that Sony Pictures intended to move forward with another trilogy featuring Tom Holland as the Webhead. This was followed by a trade report which quoted a studio insider's response that there are "no official plans for a trilogy at this phase."
It sounded like Pascal had either jumped the gun with the announcement or made an assumption about Holland's continued involvement with the franchise, but either way, she now appears to have walked back her comments.
"As long as [Holland] wants to make Spider-Man movies, we will make Spider-Man movies," she told Variety when asked to clarify her statement on the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere red carpet. "But I'm a producer, and I always think everything's going to work out." When asked if she believes Holland will reprise the role, Pascal added: "Don't get me in trouble again. If I have my way, we will."
It's difficult to imagine Pascal even mentioning a new trilogy if there weren't at least some preliminary discussions taking place, but it sounds like the powers that be would rather see how No Way Home does at the box office before making anything official. The threequel is arguably the most highly-anticipated comic book movie since Avengers: Endgame, so we don't imagine they'll have very much to worry about in that regard.
Of course, if recent comments from Holland are any indication, there's always a chance the actor won't want to commit to being locked into this role for another 4or 5 years (at least).
The first wave of reviews for Spider-Man: No Way Home are now online, but be wary of spoilers when checking them out (Variety's, in particular).
