SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Star Jacob Batalon Suggests Cast Aren't Too Bothered About SPIDER-MAN 4 Happening

Spider-Man: No Way Home star Jacob Batalon has addressed his potential MCU future, suggesting both he and the rest of the cast are more than happy to move on should the last movie really be the end...

Jacob Batalon played Peter Parker's best friend in Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man trilogy, with his character an amalgamation between Ned Leeds and Ultimate Spider-Man's Ganke. Over the course of those three movies, Ned won the hearts of fans, making the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home even more tragic.

At the end of that movie, he also forgot who Peter is, bringing a tear-jerking end to their friendship. However, it wasn't only in theaters where tears were being shed.

"We all very much were crying, our last day of work," Batalon tells Collider"Even at the premiere, we were all crying. It was such a beautiful experience to be a part of, I think for all of us. We started at a very young age, being teenagers, essentially, when we started the first movie. And to really watch the arc of the movies come together and all of our characters come full circle, I would say that it was crazy."

"[To] have it end the way it did, on such a cliffhanger, obviously, everyone wasn't expecting that. I would say that it's such a poignant ending to our movies. It really puts an exclamation on the continuance of Spider-Man, but maybe not with us, and I think that's a great thing. We may not necessarily be a part of it, in the end, but it was a beautiful ride anyway."

Like Tom Holland, Batalon would go on to double down on that last point, suggesting Spider-Man: No Way Home really did mark the end of this era of Spidey storytelling.

"I feel like actors are the last people to know. I think that people assume that actors are always hiding secrets," Batalon responded when asked what he knows about Spider-Man 4. "I promise you, we don't know anything...We're open to the idea, but we're not hoping for it.”

As for whether he'd want to return to the franchise without director Jon Watts, he added, "Honestly, I don't really put too much thought into that. I feel like we're all really moving in ways where we're not really hoping for it to happen. Not that it's bad, I just feel like we're not really anticipating another movie. I just feel like we're all doing our own thing. Whatever happens, happens."

This is quite the contrast to previous interviews where Batalon has shared his hopes to become the MCU's Hobgoblin, though we do wonder if the actor is deliberately playing it cool. Many fans remain convinced that Spider-Man 4 will be released in 2024 or 2025, though if that is the case, we'll surely get some official news soon.

Bunch of bull crap, they’re not going to leave all that money on the table. I can’t wait to the next installment and neither can a ton of other people.

@TheWalkingCuban - Me too. I love Holland as Spidey. He's easily my favorite. (Although Garfield's recent showing was quite excellent.) But yeah, I'd love to see a more classic supporting cast moving forward. I enjoyed this iteration so far...but to me nothing beats the OG stuff. Mary Jane, Gwen Stacey, Black Cat, JJJ, etc. I'd love to explore the dynamics with all of them too, not just one or the other.

Doubtful that they won't be coming back and very soon. At the very least in Holland's case, you know for sure they're going to want to resume that storyline and Kevin Feige has been very clear on wanting to continue with the character.

But maybe in the meantime, Sony keeps doing their Venomverse catastrophe (saying this as someone who likes the 2 Venom movies) and animated films to hold on to the rights. Maybe they realize the potential of this whole Spider-Verse thing in No Way Home and bring Andrew and/or Tobey back in their own solo films as many fans and the actors have suggested.

If Ned is not back in any future movie then i will be very happy with that decision. Easily my least favourite character in the MCU. It's not close guys.

Sony are going to have to release a Spidey flick eventually to retain the rights. But i guess that the likes of Kraven, El Muerto and Madame Web fulfil that stipulation (despite not including Spidey).
inkniron
inkniron - 10/5/2022, 7:52 AM
@TheManWithoutFear - They have been releasing them. Every Spidey MCU movie is a Sony production and helps him hold onto those rights.
TheManWithoutFear
TheManWithoutFear - 10/5/2022, 8:32 AM
@inkniron - No i know that. I just mean that the next instalment in that franchise will happen sooner or later because Sony pretty much have to. It's not like they'll be able to take a break.

Tonic24k - 10/5/2022, 12:58 PM
@TheManWithoutFear - Good point tho...do they have to have Spider-Man himself in them? Or just a film with Spidey-related characters?
AC1
AC1 - 10/5/2022, 7:18 AM
Definitely want them to come back. Absolutely don't want this version of Ned to become Hobgoblin (or any other villain) - we've already had the "best friend becomes a villain" arc with Harry in the Raimi trilogy which they even made a point of referencing in NWH, and also a version of that arc in TASM 2, I don't really think it needs to be done again, plus Ned is such an endearing and positive character that it would really be a shame for him to go down a villainous route. I could see him maybe being a bit resentful if/when he finds out about his memories being wiped and Peter not telling him and MJ after promising he would, but I feel like he'd be pretty rational and understanding about it and forgive Peter quite quickly after realising why Peter did what he did.

So yeah, definitely want Ned back, and I want him to stay friends with Peter. Would also be cool if he became a student of the Mystic Arts under Wong's tutelage. And of course want Zendaya back as MJ too, and maybe slightly more in line with the comics when we next see her (red hair, maybe they even come up with a way of changing her name to Mary Jane Watson instead, etc)

But if we have to have a Spider-Man 4, then make it this one

@TheManWithoutFear - Have both, why not? They'd be completely different types of movies anyways.
AC1
AC1 - 10/5/2022, 7:28 AM
@TheManWithoutFear - I'd love to see a Spider-Man movie focused around an older Peter, and having it be Tobey's version would be the icing on the cake. But tbh I'd only want it to happen if Raimi came back to direct it too, Kirsten Dunst was back as MJ, and they actually tackled the idea of a more mature Spider-Man head on by showing Peter dealing with adult responsibilities, maybe being a husband and father, etc.

Could possibly also be a way to introduce Miles if they wanna go down the multiverse route with that, although I feel like it would be a shame not to introduce him in the main MCU after his existence was already teased with Donald Glover playing his uncle in Homecoming and the Blip being a way they could explain him being 5 years older relative to Peter and thus possibly old enough to become Spider-Man too.

(Not that I'm saying Miles would be 5 years older than Peter, but say he was like 10 when the Blip happened and Peter was 18, and Miles wasn't blipped, when Peter came back he'd still be 18 but Miles would've aged 5 years and would be 15 by then)
AC1
AC1 - 10/5/2022, 7:22 AM
Also, while I'm making long rambling comments about my ideas that will never happen in the movies - with Peter presumably heading to college in the next movie I'd love it if they introduced Harry Osborn as a new friend (remember - NWH doesn't confirm there's no Norman Osborn in the MCU, just that as of 2024 Oscorp doesn't exist) but even then I wouldn't want them to bother taking him down the Goblin Jr route - I'd rather him just be Peter's friend, maybe delve into him having a bit more of a troubled life, and if they do decide to introduce an MCU Goblin (Norman) maybe have Harry be a tragic victim of whatever happens.

It would actually be pretty cool if, if they ever do another Goblin arc, they take some inspiration from Hobgoblin's introduction in the comics and make his identity a big mystery with lots of different suspects, so maybe Harry could be one of those suspects. Also wouldn't be against them amalgamating the Green Goblin and the Hobgoblin into just The Goblin for the sake of the movies if it helps streamline the storytelling.

Maybe they could introduce Gwen too, and have her be a love interest for a while whilst MJ doesn't remember Peter, although I don't know if killing Gwen again would be redundant after already seeing that in TASM 2. Wouldn't want her to become Spider-Gwen though, that should still be an alternate dimension version of the character (would be great to see Emma Stone return as that version of the character hailing from an alternate version of TASM where Peter became The Lizard and died while she got Spider powers)

@AC1 - Wow, I agree so much with your comment!
Have Peter go to college in the next trilogy and let him meet classic characters like Harry and Gwen.

Using the Hobgoblin story as the basis for the next introduced goblin is also brilliant. I guess Peter would automatically suspect his universe's version of Norman after NWH, so make us be someone else.
Really delve into the mystery of who could be behind the mask and introduce several suspects like business mongul Roderick Kingsley, mercenary Jason Macendale, fellow college student Phil Urich and of course the Osborns.

Maybe it could revealed that Kingsley, Macendale and Urich are all Hobgoblin similar to how 3 different women were Batwoman in the animated DCAU Batman movie.
It would make for an interesting take on the villain.

I agree that killing Gwen again would be a little redundant but she could still be used in different ways. Maybe as Phil Urich's girlfriend that discovers what he's up to.
Yeah, if they do Spider-Gwen, Emma Stone would definitely be the right way to go.
AC1
AC1 - 10/5/2022, 9:26 AM
@ChrisRed - Thanks! To be honest I'd still be fine with the Goblin being Norman as long as it was different enough to what we've seen with the Raimi/Dafoe version. Like, maybe by the end Peter *thinks* he's revealed the real Goblin (who's either taken into custody or dies) but it was just a decoy and we find out that it was Norman all along and he actually manages to evade capture. The decoy could either be a willing co-conspirator or a pawn Norman manipulated. So still kinda fits the "multiple Goblins" idea you mentioned but there's still a clear leader, so to speak.

Would be a nice contrast to have an actually evil version of Norman in the MCU vs the mentally ill version from the Raimi trilogy who was kind of a douche at times but for the most part was actually not that bad of a guy until the Goblin persona took over.

On that note if they ever redid Doc Ock I'd love a version who isn't warped by AI in his tentacles or anything and instead just allows his ego to get the better of him and descends from decent guy to egotistical manipulator - I actually think Walter White's arc from Breaking Bad would be an excellent template for that.

Having said all that, I think it's unlikely they'll reinvent any of the villains we saw in NWH, and any future movies will probably explore new villains like Scorpion, Mr Negative, maybe a rebooted Venom after the post credit teaser, etc.

Honestly I would bring Holland back and leave MJ and Ned behind. Otherwise you'd throw that ending in the trash. Bring in a new supporting cast, like Black Cat, Harry Osborne, Gwen Stacy, Daredevil...

I would love for them to continue, but if they don't, I think I'll be okay with it. It ended with Spider-Man swinging out of his widnow, being the most Spider-Man he's ever been. It was pretty much perfect.
ChrisRed
ChrisRed - 10/5/2022, 9:07 AM
I really hope that they do another Spider-Man trilogy (although I would prefer an Amazing Spider-Man 3).

If they do make a new set of movies with Holland, I hope they leave MJ and especially Ned behind. Let the ending of NWH mean something and have actual consequences.

Introduce new classic characters in the 4th movie like Gwen and Harry to replace them as Peter's love-interest and friend respectively. Use them in new ways not done before. Meaning no daddy issues for Harry and no death for Gwen.
In addition to these two, they could introduce other new and previously unused characters like Phil Urich, Carly Cooper, Lily Hollins, Anna Maria Maconi and Miles Warren to fill out the supporting cast.

Hold up with introducing Norman until Spider-Man 5 and then introduce the actual Mary Jane in the end of the trilogy.

I loved this trilogy. Truly. Better than Raimi's, better than Webb's.

BUT! But I will say they left a void there without a proper MJ and other supporting characters. I'd love a classic take on these characters moving forward.
