We recently learned that Spider-Man: No Way Home could be a serious contender for an Academy Awards nomination, and Sony Pictures recently shared a pair of "for your consideration" posters for the movie featuring shots from a couple of the movie's more emotional scenes.
Whether the Spidey threequel manages to secure nominations in any of the major categories remains to be seen, but if comments from star Tom Holland are any indication, he's not reading too much into what many feel is little more than online speculation.
While speaking to THR about the future of the franchise and his take on Peter Parker, the Uncharted actor sarcastically said he believes he's going to win Best Actor for his performance.
"There have been conversations about the future of Spider-Man - whether it would be me, I'm not too sure yet. Maybe I'll be a producer or something, I don't know. I do know that I love this character, and I would be sad to say goodbye. But I have achieved basically everything I wanted to achieve as this character... I really think I'm going to win the Oscar for this movie. So there, it's great."
Holland is clearly joking around (the reaction from his co-stars says it all), but the notion of No Way Home earning some Oscar love is not as far-fetched as you might think. The Multiverse-spanning adventure was one of the most acclaimed films of 2021, and has also been widely credited with rejuvenating the box office by taking in over $1 billion worldwide during this "Pandemic Era."
Granted, a Best Actor nom for Holland is probably a long shot (not that he doesn't deserve some recognition), but Best Picture is not outside the realm of possibility.
This year's nominations are expected to be announced on February 8, 2022. Do you think Spider-Man: No Way Home should be among them?
