SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Swings Past $1 Billion A Little Later Than Expected As MATRIX RESURRECTIONS Bombs

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Swings Past $1 Billion A Little Later Than Expected As MATRIX RESURRECTIONS Bombs

It's been an interesting few days at the box office, and while Spider-Man: No Way Home has hit $1 billion slightly later than we thought, news for The Matrix Resurrections and The King's Man is not good.

Yesterday's estimates were a tad premature, but Spider-Man: No Way Home has now crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office in a record 12 days (tying with Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the third-fastest movie to hit that number). The only movies able to achieve that result quicker were Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and they didn't open in a pandemic!

Spider-Man: No Way Home earned $81 million over the Christmas weekend in North America, which was no easy feat with a slew of new movies to contend with. The Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios movie has also earned $121.4 million internationally, helping take it to a spectacular  $1.05 billion total globally.

Now, it will next take aim at topping Spider-Man: Far From Home's $1.13 billion haul.

Sing 2 was #2 at the domestic box office with $23.7 million over the holiday weekend and $41 million since Wednesday. It received a coveted A+ CinemaScore (like Spider-Man: No Way Home), so is likely to continue doing well over the days and weeks to come. Unfortunately, the news isn't quite so positive for The Matrix Resurrections as that's bombed over the weekend.

Earning just $12 million over the past few days, its domestic total is around $22.5 million with $47.3 million from overseas for a total of $69.8 million. HBO Max can, to some extent, be blamed for the latest Matrix movie's poor performance domestically, but not internationally. With a $200 million budget, The Matrix Resurrections is a flop and unlikely to be the start of a new trilogy of movies.

Kingsman 3 probably won't be receiving the green light from 20th Century Studios either after The King's Man earned a palty $6.3 million over the weekend and $10 million since opening on Wednesday.

Spider-Man: No Way Home has clearly destroyed pretty much everything in its path, though the difference between Sing 2's performance and both The Matrix Resurrections and The King's Man shows that interest in those franchises is limited. The Matrix series wrapped up nearly two decades ago, and reviews clearly weren't positive enough to entice lapsed fans back. As for The King's Man, that's earned mostly negative reviews and comes on the heels of the disappointing Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

What did you decide to watch this weekend?

Feel like a lot more of the Matrix fanbase is Stateside, so it bombing isn’t too surprising with it going straight to HBO Max

@Cap1 - The article completely ignores the fact that multiple countries currently have tight restrictions based on the omicron variant of Covid. I can't go to the movies until at least the 14 of January next year.

@TheHumanSpider2 - lots of diehard fans I follow on Twitter love it, so it’s definitely divisive. I was never too attached to the franchise and while I found it’s density refreshing, I was mainly bored
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 12/26/2021, 3:46 PM
@dragon316 - The ideal scenario would've been only the first movie, but you can make the case Reloaded expended the lore, and Revolutions was a messy closure to the story...but this? what was the point?

@Cap1 - I'm a big fan of the franchise, abd I know a lot of fans...so far I only saw one fan who liked this movie.
I think on twitter you have a lot of people supporting the movie just for its "politics", while you also have a lot of people hating the movie for the same reason...I read a lot of people saying that this movie is bad because it is "woke", which is a clear indication they never saw any of the original movies, all of them as "woke" as this one...
I think you said it, the movie is boring, and if you are a fan, its worse, because it is both boring, and hurts the original movies

@TheHumanSpider2 - yeah the movie just sucks in general, it doesn’t even feel like it’s related to the other ones from a story point or the filmmaking techniques itself I get updating what you’re doing for modern movies but there’s a certain look the matrix movies have and resurrections fails even at that

Well deserved for NWH - it was phenomenal.

Well deserved for Matrix: Resurrections too - it was such an average and disappointing film lol.

@kylo0607 - I totally agree on both points. Matrix was an hour too long, I'm glad I watched it at home where I could take a break. I'm astounded at NWH's performance. Making 1B DURING COVID. WOW.

The Matrix: Resurrections was one of the most generic and average films I've ever seen.

Horrible immersion breaking meta first act, cheap set designs and CGI, quick-cut shaky cam action, stiff acting and the Matrix itself barely felt like it did in the original trilogy.

The whole movie felt like a cheap CW show and a fan-made film and not a sequel to Revolutions.

No Way Home is a love letter to Spidey fans. Out of the whole Holland trilogy this one felt like it was adapted right from the comics.

Saw it last night, was great, even better than Shang Chi

Only a few things

Not sure about the May death scene, gets hit by the Glider and is walking around for a minute or two and giving a speech before finally dying

CGI was 50/50 sometimes looked amazing, sometimes looked like a video game (Goblin first appearence, final fight electro, Lizard)

Also is it just me or did Tobey seem kind of stiff this time, Andrew and Tom were giving their a game, but something seeemed off about tobey

Just an observation

Technically they really cant save Doctor Octopus, he was pulled from that final battle before his change so when he goes back someone still needs to destroy his machine

Its not as good as into the spiderverese but it is a contender for best live action spiderman

TheWalkingCuban - 12/26/2021, 1:59 PM
@dracula - interestingly Shang Chi had better legs, kickin like Tae Bo. It dropped 50% opening to 2nd weekend and NWH dropped an inappropriate 69% and interestingly NWH, BW, and Eternals all 3 had the worst legs of the MCU. I think for NWH it’s not that it’s not on the level with Shang Chi, both were well received and NWH is a phenomenon. However, I think tho covid didn’t affect the opening, it’s affect is seen on the legs. Case in point A gigantic opening is usually followed by a gigantic drop, makes sense since such an opening means everyone watched it, but NWH dropped worse than Endgame. Only thing I can think of, well it’s two. Christmas on Friday is better than Christmas Eve on Friday. Christmas on Friday means you done did all the solemn silent nights family stuff Thursday and by Friday night you’re stir crazy. But Friday and Saturday kinda keeps it going to Sunday. And of course covid. I think this is why it topped 1
Billion and not 1.1, why the legs were dwarfed. A Friday Christmas and covid.

@dracula - fair. What would you rate it as? I gave it a fun and solid 7/10. It wasn't perfect and I took issue with a lot, but it was fun and competent enough from start to finish. I say it's the 4th best Spiderman movie, only behind Into The Spiderverse and the first 2 Raimi films (which to me are much closer to the heart and tone of Spiderman I prefer. If in 2 his existential crisis permanently blocked his organic web shooters and that inspired him to make the mechanical web shooters, Spiderman 2 would be a perfect Spiderman film to me).

I had fun at No Way Home.

But I watched The Dark Knight last night, and I still think it's the most technically sound comic book film made to date. The craft and artistry that went into every frame of TDK.... Just the opening scene alone of the bank robbery and Joker introduction has more skill and pathos and nuance and artistry and attention to detail... I felt more compelled by that bank robbery than the whole of No Way Home. Hearths performance is still magnetic and God tier, completely dwarfing with great distance the performances of No Way Homes campy villains. The film making techniques, the writing, the details...the emotion of Harvey and Bruce losing Rachel, the creativity of the Jokers plans every step of the way (like nothing we've ever seen in movies before, dressing the hostages as the bad guys, forcing 2 boats to morally decide to blow each other up, kidnapping Batman imposters and torturing them on live tv and swinging one of their corpses at the D.A. window for the gnarliest jump scare in any CBM, getting caught on purpose and setting up Batman to rescue the wrong hostage so Racheal dies.... so many new and unique and unpredictable writing choices)

It was clear to me The Dark Knight is still artistically, in my opinion, the best comic book movie made to date and the only comic book movie to date I'd say should have been a contender and winner of multiple Oscar's. 100% Heaths Oscar, but also Best Picture, because it wasn't crafted like a regular Comic Book Movie. They took everything seriously and realistically and took no short cuts and nothing felt off.

After watching TDK, my views on No Way Home are even more affirmed. NWH is fun, and im happy it's such a success and that so many loved it, but I just wish people had a more reasonable reaction like you and I had, because this "perfect film" and "best picture Oscar buzz" talk seems very... off... to me.

SauronthePower - 12/27/2021, 5:07 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - great point but, in the end, and ‘Endgame’ aside, it is VERY difficult to maintain 2nd weekend elevation coming off of a 260m opening frame. The percentage is always going to be ridiculously high as an order of regression to the norm after that huge opening push by die-hards to be a part of the event and to avoid spoiler spoilage.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 12/27/2021, 7:31 AM
@SauronthePower - yes if you make a lot you lose a lot, here are numbers for the 100 million losers club aside from NWH:

Avengers: Endgame – $209.7 million drop
Star Wars: The Last Jedi - $148.4 million drop
Avengers: Infinity War - $142.9 million drop
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 – $121.8 million drop
The Lion King - $115.2 million drop
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – $114.7 million
Avengers: Age of Ultron – $113.6 million drop
Captain America: Civil War – $106.5 million drop
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – $105 million drop
The Avengers – $104.3 million drop
Incredibles 2 – $102.4 million drop
Jurassic World – $102.2 million drop
Iron Man 3 – $101.6 million drop

It’s not bad company to be in. Percentagewise it’s closer to last Jedi than force awakens, so Does that bode ill for the way home or does it bode well for last Jedi? A little of both. It shows that on one hand last Jedi was not as badly received as one might think. And yet the other side of that coin is that no way home has legs on the lower end for marvel. In fact the bottom three are the movies of this year except ShangChi. That tells me we can blame Covid. Therefore, Spiderman is doing just fine. Percentage, legs, none of that changes the actual numbers which are very high LOL
