Yesterday's estimates were a tad premature, but Spider-Man: No Way Home has now crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office in a record 12 days (tying with Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the third-fastest movie to hit that number). The only movies able to achieve that result quicker were Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and they didn't open in a pandemic!
Spider-Man: No Way Home earned $81 million over the Christmas weekend in North America, which was no easy feat with a slew of new movies to contend with. The Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios movie has also earned $121.4 million internationally, helping take it to a spectacular $1.05 billion total globally.
Now, it will next take aim at topping Spider-Man: Far From Home's $1.13 billion haul.
Sing 2 was #2 at the domestic box office with $23.7 million over the holiday weekend and $41 million since Wednesday. It received a coveted A+ CinemaScore (like Spider-Man: No Way Home), so is likely to continue doing well over the days and weeks to come. Unfortunately, the news isn't quite so positive for The Matrix Resurrections as that's bombed over the weekend.
Earning just $12 million over the past few days, its domestic total is around $22.5 million with $47.3 million from overseas for a total of $69.8 million. HBO Max can, to some extent, be blamed for the latest Matrix movie's poor performance domestically, but not internationally. With a $200 million budget, The Matrix Resurrections is a flop and unlikely to be the start of a new trilogy of movies.
Kingsman 3 probably won't be receiving the green light from 20th Century Studios either after The King's Man earned a palty $6.3 million over the weekend and $10 million since opening on Wednesday.
Spider-Man: No Way Home has clearly destroyed pretty much everything in its path, though the difference between Sing 2's performance and both The Matrix Resurrections and The King's Man shows that interest in those franchises is limited. The Matrix series wrapped up nearly two decades ago, and reviews clearly weren't positive enough to entice lapsed fans back. As for The King's Man, that's earned mostly negative reviews and comes on the heels of the disappointing Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
