In Spider-Man: No Way Home's final battle, the three actors who have played Peter Parker on the big screen team up to take on a sinister quintet of villains. It's an amazing sequence and one that does a phenomenal job of showcasing Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield's respective takes on Spider-Man as they swing into action together (pulling off some iconic poses in the process).

In an interview with before and afters, VFX Supervisor Kelly Port explained some of the challenges presented by making sure moviegoers would be able to differentiate the three Spider-Men.

"In the end battle, there’s a lot of passing and things like that. Editorially, we did everything we could to just make sure that it was as clear as possible, whether through handovers, meaning you saw more than one Spidey in a frame handing something off and tossing something to somebody else, so that you know who’s who for the most part, in addition to what the different suits look like."

"Stylistically, they each have their own kind of iconic poses. This is especially the case where after the sandstorm and regrouping, you get that amazing theme music where even the scores are intertwined. You get some of the Danny Elfman stuff in there, and it’s really, really cool, because each have their own themes," Port continued. "When all three jumping onto the top of the statue head, backlit by the moon, you get those iconic poses as well in the air. We just took great pains to even get their running styles and the gaits and their iconic poses in the air and their swinging styles."

As for the suits themselves, with very little in the way of past VFX elements to work from (given the age of the previous Spider-Man movies and the fact that those franchises have ended), it was a case of "[basing] our digital suits on what our costume department made. And I think for the most part, they based them on the original suits. However, there could be a little bit of variation in them."

"The fact that Tobey and Andrew came from a slightly later timeline, they’re older, so time has passed," she explained, "and they’ve lived their lives and probably have changed their suits or augmented them a little bit." Obviously, we're hoping for some official images down the line that offer a much better look at Maguire and Garfield back in costume as their takes on Spider-Man.

Not saying that I want the movie to have given Tobey and garfield new suits, but I am curious if there's any concept art for those two with new designs. Garfield especially would've probably adopted different suit designs had the amazing films continued and I think it would be cool to at least see a what if to assume what they would've worn.

@Origame - They probably should have given Andrew a new suit, since TASM2 is nearly identical with Tobey's suit and during the fast-paced action scenes it was hard to tell which one was which.

@FinnishDude - I mean, I'd say that if we were talking before seeing the film maybe. But I didn't really have a problem differentiating the three spidermen during the action sequences. Especially with their method of baton passing to help identify them. Also, garfields suit is recognized even by those who hate his movies as the best on screen Spiderman suit. I'd see a lot of backlash if it wasn't included.

@Origame - Never really understood the love for TASM2 suit. Don't hate it or anything, but it is basically just the Raimi suit with different eyes. People going crazy over that suit always felt like a weird pity point for Garfield.

@FinnishDude - I mean, you're welcome to feel that way. But most love the suit. And since this is meant to be a love letter to all live action movie actors it just makes sense.

@FinnishDude - I mean when that first reveal happened, I thought they had perfected it. Now that the dust has settled and we have a Spider-Man who can widen and narrow his lenses, I think it’s still good but not quite there.

It's kinda telling how generic/forgettable the music in TASM movies was, when that brief moment of dubstep playing during Electro showing up was the only moment in the whole movie where I was able to recognize them re-using music from those scores.

@FinnishDude - The music in the first film was incredible. The second movie was forgettable.

That’s why they brought back Peter’s theme from the first film instead of the second one

Man… the CGI in this movie was sooo bad towards the end. People like to trash BP for its third act CG (which only really shows up in one scene), but this movie had so many bad moments in the second half.

Crazy how Tobey and Andrew had better CGI in their own movies from 14/7 years ago

@DaHyro - cgi and effects don’t make movie successful avatar is coldly terrible 3D effects cgi I can’t comment I’m not movie critic

@DaHyro - Can't agree with that. MCU has the "rushed third act CGI" problem in many of their recent movies, no doubt about that, but every time Spidey, Goblin or Dock Ock was replaced by CGI puppets in the first two Raimi movies, they looked like Woody from Toy Story 1, while Spidey vs. Electro in TASM2 was like test footage for the tie-in video game.

@FinnishDude - Idk man… compare this shot of Andrew in NWH vs him in his own movie from 7 years ago.

You could also compare this shot of Tobey from 17 years ago to the image used in the comment below mine.

@DaHyro - Those two Andrew examples look pretty identical to me. The second one has the advantage of faster movement, so you don't have the time for a really good look, but it's not like we are talking about night and day here.

As for the Tobey one, is he CGI in that shot? Could be him physically lying on a green-screen, but even then I would have to grant you that the CG-trains look decent.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - i think the problem is tobey mask is totallly cgi, and andrew is not, maybe tobey dont want to use the mask at all and they just cgi the thing
