SILK TV Series Adds WATCHMEN Producer As Showrunner As Work On The SPIDER-MAN Spinoff Continues

The Silk TV series recently took a big step forward with the addition of a showrunner who has some serious small screen credentials, including HBO's Watchmen. Find more details after the jump...

Deadline confirms that Tom Spezialy, who recently served as an executive producer on HBO's Emmy-winning Watchmen, has signed an overall deal with Amazon Studios. This wouldn't normally be big news here, but the trade adds that he's joined the live-action Silk series as showrunner.

He'll fill that role alongside executive producer Lauren Moon (Atypical), the writer of Sony's first small screen Marvel Comics adaptation. As part of Sony Pictures' Universe of Marvel Characters, this series is being overseen by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse scribes Phil Lord and Chris Miller (who signed a deal to take charge of a "suite" of Spider-Man spinoffs for television).

Silk is also being executive produced by Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal.

The title character of this series first appeared in 2014's Amazing Spider-Man #1. Created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, Cindy Moon has many similar characteristics to Peter Parker after being bitten by the same radioactive spider that granted him his spectacular superpowers.

Few details have been revealed about Silk, but we have previously heard that Sony is looking for a Korean-American actress between the ages of 19 and 29 to play this member of the Spider Family.

Silk is a character with plenty of potential on screen, though we're betting Spider-Man won't be part of her origin story. That's become the norm with the spinoff movies, though it would be pretty cool if Sony were to find a way to shed some light on how Peter gained his powers in the MCU.

Nice. The Watchmen series was pretty good, especially the stuff with Hooded Justice.

It seems that when Slott created Silk, he ripped off/repurposed Rick Remender's pitch from 2009 where he suggested the company that made the radioactive spider that bit Peter mutated four other bugs and had them bite test subjects who had been imprisoned for years and had gone insane. But instead, Slott just made another spider-centric character to be a love interest for Peter who is completely mentally sound and socially ept even after being imprisoned for years.

Still dumb to have a spiderman universe without spiderman (really considering the mcu isnt using her, why not make it the spider gwen universe) but now this show at leasr has a possibility of being good

@dracula - I mean sure but it’s also dumb to have a “spidey” who isn’t the boy genius of the comics and depends on and is obsessed with Tony Stark, but here we are.

Can’t trust Sony but they got talent here and Silk is such a dope character

@BlackBeltJones - how is she dope? She's whack. Her only role was to be a ho when Peter was not married to MJ anymore and they wanted a single Peter. Her powers and origin are lame, and if you're not doing Morlun and Ezekial and Spider Verse, is it even really Silk?

@Makiveli21 - a spider-gwen show would make more sense. Silk is pretty niche.

The Multiverse needs spider hunters. Before Morlun's debut, I want to see Bora and Brix.

So Deadline reported this 3 days ago, and we only get the news on this site now? You guys have really been slacking. Most outlets have these news stories days before this website.

@CapstheMFingMan - The site used to be the first at a lot of news before it became the same 4 people posting everything and not allowing for others to contribute as much

@Armageddon26 - That's why this became my go-to site. But now they spend more time coming up with bulls**t articles and listicles than actually providing news. It's pathetic. And yet I still visit. SMH.

So they're really moving forward with this huh? I guess I would actually be interested in this if it wasn't a 99% chance of taking place in Spider-Manless universe

I haven't read any of the solo Silk series but I'd watch this over some of the turds coming our way.

They used Cindy Moon in Homecoming... wish Sony would just use the already established threads out there. I have a feeling that so far Prowler and Scorpion are going to waste in spite of good setups for them (as far as sewing the seeds for future appearances).
Same with Chameleon if they're looking to make Kraven non MCU and disregard Dimitri in Far From Home.
They might as well connect them.
