Spider-Man's rejected black costume look from SPIDER-MAN 3"

As if fans needed a reason to hate Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 3" even more, see what Sam Raimi's more comic-accurate black costume suit for old Spidey would've looked like.

A few weeks ago, the Spider-Man Crawlspace website put up an image of what Spider-Man's black "alien" costume would have looked like in the 2007 film "Spider-Man 3". The film was criticized for many reasons, from having too much going on to the poor treatment of Eddie Brock/Venom and ruining Spidey's origin by revealing it was Sandman who really killed Uncle Ben by accident (... what?!?), but while it made the least amount of money for Sam Raimi's Spidey trilogy in the U.S., it ended up being a big box office success worldwide.

Here's the picture as to how Spider-Man's black suit would have looked like:

I know, it wouldn't have made "Spider-Man 3" any better, but I'm still not sure why this look was rejected. Online rumors say it's because the suit was made out of latex and didn't work well. Other rumors say Raimi didn't like the look of the suit and he wanted to keep the webbing on the black suit. Whatever the reason, I'm sure fans will now be wondering why this suit that is much more faithful to the comic books was rejected. What do you guys think of this suit compared to the one we ultimately got in "Spider-Man 3"? Do you think Raimi and company made the right call?

Raimi never liked the black suit or Venom. Can't blame him.

Either way the suit looks cool but I loved the Venom look. If they only made Venom a bit bigger. I loved the webbing on Venom.

The spider that's on that suit is great..so much like the Mike Zeck original spider design.
Don't like the one Raimi is holding.

These are better than final version.
I don't think Venom was the problem in the movie,it was dancing Peter!

Sandman was cool..killing Uncle Ben,not cool.
There was no reason for that to have happened.

the smooth black look is a lot harder to light & w/ it being cg in a lotta scenes its a lot easier for it to look fake. a slightly more textured suit would look better, but the raised webbing suit is best because not only does it have texture, it saves money so that they dont have to pay the cg artists to create a new suit model from scratch, just a slightly upgraded & recolored version of the one they already have

I like it. But I liked Spider-man 3. Sure it had its problems but it wasn't as bad as some say.

The first and last act were great. The middle was a mess.

WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? They should have used this instead of that crappy one they used in the end. FRIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK! But the emo dancing peter would have remained.

Sure, Spidey 3 has a lot of problems, but there's more emotion in the scene where Sandman tries to pick up the locket but it falls through his hand - than in the entirety of The Amazing Spider-Man.

if raimi would have done this..stayed true to his vision..NOT made sandman bens killer..not raped venom..then we could have had a great spidey movie..but the studio made him use venom which he raped..then the whole uncle ben killed by sandman and the emo parker shite..so much went wrong in something that couldve been good

This would've been miles better than the one we actually got. Hopefully, when the black suit is introduced in the Webb series, we'll get something like this.

"...the whole uncle ben killed by sandman and the emo parker shite..."

I think both of those elements got away from Raimi a little. Perhaps because Venom was shoehorned in, perhaps not.

Making Flint Ben's killer was probably an abstract motif that got a little too literal... when... uh... they made it literal. The point was to tie back to Peter's deepest sense of injustice, and show how even that can occupy a gray area.

The whole idea behind Peter turning into a "villain" himself was a direction Raimi had in mind before they even put Venom in the movie. The idea was that Peter, through his big-headedness, arrogance and disregard for the people around him, would realise how quickly the lines blur between the "heroes" and "villains".

The *way* that arrogance is shown is very Grease, very sort of 60s bad boy, which is played for comedic, campy effect ala Raimi. Setting aside the fact that that's far too tongue-in-cheek and irreverent to put in a mainstream movie, one wonders if it's done that way because there was suddenly a "mystical" reason for his villainous character traits. A more naturalistic and human descent into "darkness" would've likely skipped the Jim Carrey/The Mask-esque dance number.

I don't think there was ever any intention of going truly dark and grim with it, since that would be incredibly jarring, and there was obviously a desire to balance the tone of the movie.

Putting Venom into Raimi's take on Spidey (which was very anachronistic and rooted in 60s sensibilities, visually and tonally) was always a completely mental decision. I would've just headbutted whoever at Sony suggested it.

SimonM7 - Agreed. I may hate "Spider-Man 3", but I do concede that Sandman moment in the film is brilliantly done and one of the few good scenes I legitimately liked from that movie. "The Amazing Spider-Man", IMHO, is much worse than "Spider-Man 3" and it lacked the good writing, memorable score, and, most of all heart, the Raimi films (especially the first two) had. Though to be fair, Martin Sheen was a better, more believable Uncle Ben and he would've been perfect if the "with great power comes great responsibility" line had been said correctly (and yes, I know Uncle Ben never actually said it in the comics, it was said at the end of "Amazing Fantasy" #15 -- but still...).

well..i do dig why they rejected it. it looks like a live-size action figure.

I remember seeing another pic with this version of the suit in some book not long after the 3rd movie came out and I thought "Yeah, let's not use the classic black suit b/c it obviously looks too awesome. Instead, let's just take the red/blue suit and make it black/gray." What a disappointment that suit was. Should have went with this.

I think what actually killed me for not liking the movie enough was not enough of the black suit...and venom was barely in it
