Emma Stone On "Modernizing" Gwen Stacy In THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

Emma Stone talked a lot about her role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 recently, like how they wanted to modernize Gwen Stacy, the character's relationship with the titular hero, the scene she shared with Shailene Woodley's Mary Jane, and more.

The Amazing Spider-Man is officially released in the US, and many fans are flooding the theaters this weekend to see it. One of the highlights of the film according to many is Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy. When she spoke with reporters at a press junket recently, she talked about wanting to make Gwen popular with the audience since she may not be as well known to the general audience as Mary Jane Watson was. “We wanted to modernize [Gwen] — she’s independent, and she has a lot of her own goals. I think her heroic impulse is pretty strong because of her father. And she’s got a great mind. So she’s going to school for medicine, and she wants to save people just as much as Peter without being bitten by a radioactive spider,” Stone said, and added that the director and screenwriters wanted to keep her character, “proactive, and never a damsel in distress.” Her character is the movie was praised mostly for her connection with Peter. Regarding Gwen's relationship with him, she says, “their relationship is very grounded, very human, and I think that’s important… Gwen is probably the most human component outside of Aunt May.”

Shailene Woodley was also cast in the movie as MJ, and eventually went on to become a huge star with the movie Divergent after her character got cut from the final movie. Stone talked a bit about working with Woodley, and said that they had a great time together filming a very emotional scene in the film. “There was actually kind of a beautiful scene with Gwen and Mary Jane that we shot, where Gwen is going to say goodbye, and Mary Jane’s on the porch, and they talk to each other, and Gwen says, ‘Will you give him this message for me?’” Stone recalled. “And the last line was, she says, ‘oh, I didn’t say my name, by the way — I’m MJ,’ and I say, ‘I’m Gwen,” and I’m about to go to London, and I say, ‘I’m really glad I got to meet you, MJ.’ And then I leave for London, which makes me want to cry even now. It was beautiful, it was really beautiful.” Although one of these emotional scenes was cut, the movie was still packed full of scenes that felt full of emotion, and that's mainly because Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield were so close together and filmed their scenes together from the heart. Did you enjoy the movie, or did you hate the way most of the movie was handled? Sound off in the usual spot, and check out The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in theaters this weekend if you haven't already.

"In “The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2,” for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & Jeff Pinkner, with a previous draft by James Vanderbilt, and based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are the producers. The latest chapter in the Spider-Man story is set for release in 3D on May 2, 2014."

Starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon/Electro, Sally Fields as Aunt May, Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, and Paul Giamatti as Aleksei Sytsevich/The Rhino, you can check out Marc Webb's THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 when it hits US theaters May 2nd, 2014.

It's funny, I got more "heart" and "emotion" out of Spidey's scenes with that little kid than I ever got out of Gwen and Peter's scenes (beside the one at the end, obviously).

When Spidey rescues the kid from the bullies, fixes his project, and then walks him all the way home?? And then we the kid shows up at the end again and stands up to the Rhino, only for Spidey to finally come back, thank the kid, and then face down the villain?

Man, those were hands down my two favorite scenes in the entire movie. They just NAILED it...and in a way, it makes it even more maddening that the rest of the movie was such a slog and a bloated mess. Those perfect scenes just made everything else that much worse for me.

Wait, that was the same child at the end? I thought it was two separate fans... nice. My favorite scene as well next to the ending in this mess. This is what you get when you hire the Transformers 2 and Into Darkness writers... a [frick]ing rushed mess.

@GoldenOne33 You do realize people react differently to death right? Heck there was even a woman who was told that her daughter has died and she said, 'she can't be dead. She has gotten her birthday gift.' there is no rule book on how to mourn.

Couldn't agree more, charlie. I mean, I'll admit I almost teared up when Spidey volunteered to walk the kid home and just started to have a normal conversation with him like it was no big deal. THAT is exactly the type of heroism that comic book movies can't seem to get right. I loved that.

It's just too bad the rest of the movie couldn't care less about those small, emotional moments. Everything had to be bigger, with more characters and more subplots and more villains and...ugh.

@MAK, Yeah I'm pretty sure it was the same kid. I actually liked the last 30-45 minutes of the film, but everything before (aside from the scene with the kid) was just such a mess. You could just tell from the story that it was written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Two of the biggest hacks in Hollywood.

One of my biggest problems is the fact that Peter is more affected by Capt Stacy's death than he EVER was by Uncle Ben's. Why the hell didn't he see ghosts of Uncle Ben in the first film, or even in this one?
Klone
Klone - 5/3/2014, 11:18 AM
The entire Death of Gwen Stacy arc was simply ruined for by the fact that the Green Goblin was not the real Green Goblin, a long standing rivalry and hatred had not be established (with stupid motivations, plans and characters in place) and the aftermath of her death was not a brutal final Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin fighting resulting in Norman's death and Harry's gradual downfall, not his forced, rushed one like in this film.
Klone
Klone - 5/3/2014, 11:19 AM
Should of had Harry in the beginning, Peter-Norman's complex relationship that in turns makes Harry-Norman's already complex relationship even more strained, the Daily Bugle, etc.

Sorry, but there is no way I can look at this as a definitive Spider-Man series. That also goes for Raimi despite Spider-Man 2.

@GoldenOne33 yeah its a movie but nobody seemed to complain when Bruce wasn't seen crying his eyes out when rachel died. And you know why Peter's father had to leave. Your acting like he went to las vagas to get laid by a stripper.

STOP BLAMING MARK WEBB FOR THE [frick]ING TRANSFORMER 2 AND INTO DARKNESS WRITERS [frick]ING UP!

He did not like the screenplay either from what I gather.

So many elements made The Night Gwen Died excellent, not simply her death. Arguable the best Spider-Man story ever and one of the most impactful stories in comics speeding up the transition from Silver Age to the Bronze Age. Gwen's death was not the only thing that made it excellent. Such a [frick]ing waste.
Klone
Klone - 5/3/2014, 11:27 AM
Twice now they have [frick]ed up the Green Goblin... and they wasted the Harry-Norman relationship and the Peter-Norman relationship... one of the best things you could but in the films or animated tv series, etc...

This film is as much of a waste of potential as it is a mess.
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 5/3/2014, 11:30 AM
Peter Parker, who's supposed to be this genius in the field of science...had to depend on a YouTube clip to figure out how batteries work. Then he had to have his girlfriend tell him how magnets work as well. I mean, at least he used Google in this movie rather than Bing (like in the first TASM), so I guess he's getting smarter?

I've gathered it from bits and pieces in general. And even if he did love the script, the director should not be blamed for the stupidity of the hack screenwriters.

@Sauron

You know... I can understand why people got angry over organic webbing as the artificial stuff shown how intelligent Peter is, but I don't get how TASM fans champion the artificial webs as evidence for this series being supposedly closer to the comics when in that film he created the web slingers by copying a pre existing design, defeating the meaning behind them: to show how intelligent Peter is.
Mrcool210
Mrcool210 - 5/3/2014, 11:49 AM
@GoldenOne33 dude, he was crying for a long time after gwens death, we just didn't see him do it for a long time cause it time skipped like six months, nobody is going to be crying that much, plus he gave up being spider-man for that time period, shouldn't that be enough?
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 5/3/2014, 11:52 AM
@MAK, Because most people don't care about the context of anything, as long as it's just like the comics. To them, being just like the comics means it's automatically better somehow. They only care that it's artificial web shooters...but conveniently ignore the details surrounding it.

That's why tons of fans are praising the fact that they stayed true to the comics and killed of Gwen...even though the context is completely different and pretty much misses the entire point to it.

You're right, in this movies Peter in not even close to be intelligent, he watch youtube videos, he doesn't know how electicity works.

And Gwen died just because writers want her death, she was useless in the fight and a smart woman would never go to a super powered fight

Mark Webb loves his social media and digital age stuff.

Love how he always has some nerd throwing out random Spidey info "his costume must be made out of some sort of rubber"

Or how every dead person leaves Parker a message to remember them by: Parents, Uncle Ben, Gwen even Captain Stacey came back for the subliminal.

Also Gwen died just because, just like Flash Thompson had a change of heart just because. It's the Anakin effect.

Why was Lizard absent anyway, why was the zero decay formula dropped?

It's a shame they cut the MJ scene out.
I like it when films introduce a character that will be a major one but in a very small capacity. So that in follow ups we can go "oh she was in the last one" instead of just randomly introducing her.
Like with Felicia :) that was a nice tease.

Klone - 5/3/2014, 12:41 PM
What made whole story of Gwen Stacy great was everything with the characters like Harry, Norman, etc. and the Spider-Man-Goblin rivalry and how Spider-Man even helped Norman to rid himself of the persona at one point. The history, the build up, the emotion, the character relationships, the brutal showdown... ALL GONE.
breakUbatman
breakUbatman - 5/3/2014, 12:43 PM
Would have been cool to have MJ but cutting her out allows them to (hopefully) give Peter a valid reason to put off dating her for a while then finally hit 'the Jackpot'.

I think in terms of story the events that actually happened it was best to lose MJ but the excuse that there was too much going on is poor.

This plauge that the girlfriend must save the hero is annoying shit.
Pepper saved Tony in IM3.
Gwen saved Spidey in TASM2..with a cop car! Ugh.
It's happened in several other recent superhero films too.

I don't mind them helping..not saving the hero,it's not empowering to women it's stupid.
When Catwoman saved Bats in TDKR it made sense, she has skills & is an actual "superhero".

@sameold

Though I don't exactly agree with your opinion 100%, empowerment to women is so [frick]ing warped. On a talk show women laughed at a man mockingly for having his genitals cut off by his wife in the night after he filed a divorce as "empowerment", a woman kidnaps as man, imprisons him her basement for a few days and rapes him to release him later is also see as "empowerment" (this woman had fans and supporters)... so yeah, really warped shit is seen as empowerment right now.
sameoldthing
sameoldthing - 5/3/2014, 3:18 PM

Yea,that "empowerment" is skewed.
I will be happy to see a headlining female superhero so she can get into saving the day.
