I read the reviews Rotten Tomatoes had to offer and I watched the meter slowly drop and decline and I went into the movie saying "wow, this could be a huge mistake." The only mistake I made was sitting near a family who paid ten dollars to be on their phones the whole time.

Be The Sheppard

I thoroughly enjoyed the film and it reminds me of the first time you go on a rollercoaster and your family is trying to scare you before going on. You are timid in line and then full blown terrified and close to tears on the ride but as it goes on, your fears slowly fade and it turns out it wasn't as bad as your family made it out to be and instead, it was alot of fun and probably some of the most fun you've had in a while. This movie boasts some of the best Spidey scenes of all time and the ending is probably one of the most saddest due to the strong preformances in the movie. This isn't like Green Lantern or Batman & Robin it's a film that does more right than wrong. So all in all, be your own person and don't follow review sites. "WELL WHAT IF THEY SHARE THE SAME VIEWS AS ME?" Well that's fine and dandy but every single movie? Seriously? There's a reason why no two people are exactly the same.

Cmon Man!

I know what you're thinking. "Oh my god what a fan boy I'm definitely going to demolish him in the comments section for this atrocity." Well before you do hear me out first. Like any movie it does have it's flaws. Even though Harry Osborn was very well done by Dane Dehaan, the relationship between him and Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker felt rushed and didn't carry the depth needed for the eventual betrayal. Not only that, but Jamie Foxx's Electro also felt a tad off. His love turned hate for Spider-Man seemed stretched. How do you go from being obsessed with this guy (who also saved your life) to hating him in the matter of 2 minutes?

Repeat That For Me Please?

Some of the complaints for this movie is complete and obvious nitpicking that just continues on from the first film. Some examples? "Spider-Man is still growing up!", "Spider-Man ran through about 60 years of comic history!", "Too many villians!" "Electro disappears for most of the film!", "Peter Parker is still a hipster!" "Too many jokes!" "They didn't show Spider-Man's costume change!" "They started the movie with practical effects and then jumped into a cgi web scene!" I could continue on but you catch my drift. There is not a complaint that is constantly addressed EXCEPT......

What Killed The Dinosaurs?

Calling this film the "Batman & Robin" of the Spider-Man franchise is complete flame-bait. It's so insulting that it is guaranteed to cause a war in the comments section and that's why it's used just so that the article is guaranteed multiple views trust me, ask Josh Wilding about it. Whoever says Electro is a bad pun machine like Mr. Freeze didn't watch the movie. DId he make a bad pun? Yeah he did, all two of them in fact. Another pair of issues was the plot and this filming having too many villains. Maybe I am a genius and don't know it but my brain didn't hurt watching the film and I followed the plot from start to finish and didn't once go "wait what happened?" As for the villains? Cmon son, two villains was completely fine and Rhino's end cameo was perfect. Harry didn't become the Goblin until before the climax and Rhino didn't become Rhino until the very end. Also it's not like these characters will never be used again and were thrown away. In fact, I'm pretty sure a certain Gobby and hornhead will return.

The Verdict

All in all, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was alot of fun and some of the complaints it is recieving comes from the land of absurdity. Is it on the same level as a certain superhero politcal thriller? Well no, because this film doesn't try to be a political thriller. Is it an oscar worthy film? No, but it is certainly not on the level as a certain caped crusader and his boy wonder.

To me the good parts of the film are when Spider-Man is swinging around New York and the fight scenes were pretty good. My biggest complaint is that there isn't a plot to the film there are 4 plots and how they are badly handled. You have the Electro plot, the Harry Osborn plot, the Gwen Stacy plot, and the missing parents plot and the film would kind of just be on one plot then drop it for another then drop that one for another and so on. Be it writers director or both to me they did a bad job handling all these plots. I felt I was watching 2 films crammed into one where say the Electro plot and the Gwen Stacy plot should have been this movie and the Harry Osborn plot and the missing parents plot should have been another movie. I feel this movie has the same issues that Iron Man 2 has that this movie wasn't made to be it's own movie it was made to be a vehicle to launch their own cinematic universe. Iron Man 2 had the same issues multiple loosely connected plots and to many villains with again to much stuff just there to set up for future movies.

More of a nitpick for me then anything I feel Garfield is a terrible Peter Parker way to cool and snarky for the nerd that is Peter Parker though he does a great Spider-Man. If they could somehow combine Tobey who got Peter Parker with Andrew's Spider-Man we would finally have the true rendition of Spider-Man on film.

I have other nitpicks like the dialogue wasn't that great, the score especially for Hans Zimmer was subpar the Spider-Man theme especially was bad because nothing about it said Spider-Man more of a techno Captain America theme with the rising trumpets. The scene in the plane was way to long and not really interesting I didn't need to see Richard Parker have a fist fight with a killer just have the plane blow up. Lastly Paul Giamatti was completely wasted in this film and the Rhino was just more crammed into this film and was terribly superfluous. I mean I don't think Giamatti was even given a script or he had no lines he was just told to act like a crazy Russian mobster a lot of his lines were gibberish. Rhino should have been cut from the film entirely.

End of the day its an ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN movie, enjoy it as one!

I still like Raimi's much better, always will (talking SM 1 & 2 ofc). tho Sandman was pretty cool!

Only way I'd dislike this Webb Spidey franchise is if it did crossover with Avengers or even X-Men... neither of them I personally see as Ultimate... rather wait for a MARVEL STUDIOS Spidey-verse no mater how long it takes.

Great review thumbs.

I agree I don't like his Peter Parker but I really like his Spider-Man. They need to fix his Peter.

Fun movie though.

Yeah I should have just taken your comment and made that my article lol.

@Godzillafart

I kinda wished it was more gradual like Spider-Man did some more things that finally broke Max's obsession.

@ pesmerga44

It's your opinion share it.

@TheThing1994

I have never seen anyone have such a distaste for someone's portrayal of a character before lol. It's actually impressive.

I feel the same, I really enjoyed the movie. The only thing I didn't like was the Goblin's look. But the film actually almost had me in tears near the end.

Good write up.
It's a shame this movie is getting the heat that it is.
The two main things riding against it are the inevitable comparisons to the Raimi franchise, and that it isn't a MCU movie.
you have to judge this film on it's own merits, and look at it objectively.
Spider-Man is my favorite Superhero hands down, and even I had criticisms about this flick. The thing is the stuff that's being complained about, is completely overshadowing the subtle stuff that's being overlooked.

A big one that no one is bringing up, is that it's DEAD OBVIOUS that Aunt May knows that Peter is Spider-Man. I personally thought it was a nice touch, and they don't throw it in your face every five minutes. You really have to pay attention to catch it.
It's when Aunt May is in Peter's room after seeing the big collage/jigsaw puzzle made concerning his parents and the whole emotional conversation she has with him. The way she looks up at him, and says
"...even when we keep secrets from the ones we love Peter"
She basically says in no uncertain terms that she knows, like any mother or aunt knows their child.

Also near the end after Gwen dies and months pass without Peter being
Spider-Man. He's in the kitchen watching the news reports about Rhino, and Spider-Man's absence. May looks over, and it's obvious he wants to be there and do something. She just casually says, "Wonder where that Spider-guy is? hope is okay wherever he is. they could really use him right now."

Subtle stuff like that is what won me over.
"Birthday candles" is birthday candles, but subtexually, there's alot more going on.

Other points to mention are, Peter could've saved Harry with his blood, and he realizes it when watching the video of his father concerning the Spider DNA. Again, he doesn't scream the exposition down the hallway, but it's there.

And Gwen made her own choice to be with Peter and help him beat Electro, after he tried to prevent her from being there.
Ultimately resulting in her demise by Goblin.
"Nobody makes my choices for me, I make my own choices Peter!"

It's worth a second watch for sure.
If anyone does, look out for those, it really lessened the skepticism, at least for me.

Thanks! Lol! I just love Peter Parker so much and Garfield ain't him! Sony clearly went a different 'edgier' route with him just to differentiate from the prior films. Not a good idea!!!!

But it's amazing how good his Spider-Man is! I loved the scenes when Spider-Man is on screen. Truly.

I guess I'll take that for what's it worth.

"Other points to mention are, Peter could've saved Harry with his blood, and he realizes it when watching the video of his father concerning the Spider DNA. Again, he doesn't scream the exposition down the hallway, but it's there."

I don't get what you are saying here are you saying Peter let Harry die purposefully or that in hindsight he could have given Harry his blood without worry? I think Peter had some reason to worry what could happen to Harry if he gave him his blood Harry has a bad reaction to it due to genetic alterations killing him quicker or some kind of mutation like Lizard or Electro. I don't blame him for not giving Harry his blood and after the fact he learned about the venom working due to his blood he had no time to see Harry. He had to go after Gwen who was leaving that night and then after being attacked by Harry he probably wasn't even thinking about helping him.

@theThing

If they could combine Tobey McGuire's Peter Parker with Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man I think we would finally have a true blue rendition of Spider-Man on film.
HankPymp
HankPymp - 5/5/2014, 5:10 PM
@pesmerg: I was referring to it as more of an after thought. Like "The whole time I could've saved him, and didn't even know it", something that could carry over to the next movie kind of thing. Richard Parker said the Spider formula only works in his blood line, so in hindsight he could've saved Harry, but yes he did have to catch Gwen before she left. So he didn't have much time to really reflect on it, or take action on it. Though, the point about ya know,
killing Gwen Stacy more than likely refutes any help hat Peter would wanna give him at all. Those supervillians man, I tells ya.

It was an average film at best. The film was not amazing or spectacular and the amount of good things that happened with in the film did not even balance out the bad.

Also the fact that this film has so many plots does not help the film that much. I actually prefer TASM over TASM 2.

Just watched it and I agree with you 100%! My only quibble was the finale felt a bit too short and SPOILER Gwen's death should have taken a bit longer (not counting the constant foreshadowing). But like you said they didn't kill anyone off. I was a bit surprised that Harry was the mastermind behind the Sinister Six.

Like you, I was also able to follow the plot. Pretty simple and not overcomplicated. Aunt May's scenes were really touching. I love how people are complaining about the cheesiness. That's how Spider-Man is! Great movie though. My favorite out of the 5. I hope they do the Symbiote story next.

Maguire's Parker was too lackluster and almost had no personality, but start with that and give him personality and a bright spunk but not an asshole and you have Peter.

I think we'll see a better Peter in the next film : )

@HankPymp

I am so glad someone else caught onto Aunt May lol. It was a theory the first time I watched it and on the second view it solidified it. As for helping Harry yeah they didn't do a really good job on explaining the consequences of not giving Harry his blood. Saying that, they didn't really need to I am smart enough to realize a bad company like Oscorp would just use it as a weapon. If they did explain the consequences people would have said "WOW THEY DIDN'T NEED TO EXPLAIN WHY PETER'S RADIOACTIVE IS DANGEROUS LOL WOW TALK ABOUT SPOON FEEDING THE AUDIENCE." This franchise is all about damned if you do and damned if you don't.
