Before Ultimate Spider-Man officially introduced Miles Morales to the masses, there was a teeny tiny bit of backlash against the young hero. Fanboys resented the notion that Spidey's racial identity should change. As writer Brian Michael Bendis conceded, Miles Morales was deliberately created to capture the modern face of fandom, which is a diverse bunch. I'm not here to tell Parker diehards that they're wrong for favoring their classic Spider-Man over Miles, but Morales is an important hero for kids. Black kids. Puerto Rican kids. Whether or not you hate the idea of 'pandering', Miles Morales is an important hero. He gives hope. He gives the new face of fandom a powerful, lead hero with whom they can identify.
I hope I captured that concept well for you guys. Let me know what you think. If you dig this stuff, make sure you check out more of our comics at Preheroics.com.
