Why Miles Morales Is So Important

Miles Morales is a controversial figure in fandom, but he's important to so many of us...

Before Ultimate Spider-Man officially introduced Miles Morales to the masses, there was a teeny tiny bit of backlash against the young hero.  Fanboys resented the notion that Spidey's racial identity should change.  As writer Brian Michael Bendis conceded, Miles Morales was deliberately created to capture the modern face of fandom, which is a diverse bunch.  I'm not here to tell Parker diehards that they're wrong for favoring their classic Spider-Man over Miles, but Morales is an important hero for kids.  Black kids.  Puerto Rican kids.  Whether or not you hate the idea of 'pandering', Miles Morales is an important hero.  He gives hope.  He gives the new face of fandom a powerful, lead hero with whom they can identify.

I hope I captured that concept well for you guys.  Let me know what you think.  If you dig this stuff, make sure you check out more of our comics at Preheroics.com.

Why don't we just have Michael Cera play Shaft?
But in all seriousness, I do like Miles Morales

I think heroes in general bring hope. Miles is just the last of the bunch.

They could've made him be Spider-Boy and coexist with Peter.

Spidey 2099 was a mixed race character way before & it was just done & it was cool.
He had Mexican heritage & even used it in his costume design.
There is a huge amount of Mexican Americans so they need representation.

Ult. Spidey has gotten this attention because he looks black. This day & age the media makes it a big deal when it should just be accepted as a normal thing.
Marvel probably did do some pandering to garner attention.

And Avi Arad and the head honchos as Sony have steadfastly and stubbornly refused to even entertain the thought of introducing Miles Morales in their movies. Says a lot about them, no?

Should be, "head honchos AT Sony"

@SauronsBANE1; Probably it's because there are a billion stories of the original Spider-Man that can be told before introducing a chatacter that exsisted for about 2 years..

First of all, it makes little to no business sense to just immediately shut down the very idea of introducing a minority comic book hero. Secondly, having a wealth of "original" stories to tell with Peter Parker hasn't stopped Arad and Sony from re-treading almost every major beat that was already covered in Raimi's films. Third, who says they have to exhaust EVERY single story for Peter Parker before moving on to Miles? Where is that rule written down in stone? They can literally do anything they feel like doing. But the very thought of introducing a minority superhero is too much for them? Please.

Never got into the ultimate universe. I of read up on him. I have no biggie with it, being parker died. I hope they bring him into the 616 universe, I know he is supposed to cross over or something. Have him start out as say, Ronin, and make it a huge reveal. Love the Ronin persona and would love for him or her to be of mixed races. Even bringing agent into the 616 as Ronin, or better yet make her Ronin in the show. A guy can dream, have had crush on her since street fighter. I AM GROOT!!!

I know, and i agree with you on those points.
Spider-Man 2099 would be a great chance for a minority superhero, also a change of background to a future scenario would be great in my opinion.

@TheMexicanSuperman, Well I wasn't really trying to say that, and I can't pretend to know what Sony's executives are thinking and what goes on behind closed doors. But it really doesn't make sense to just outright reject the notion of Miles Morales in ANY of their future movies. That's all I'm saying.

But having said that, I think the reasoning of not wanting to use him because he's a minority is DEFINITELY on the table. I mean, why is that so far out of the realm of possibility? Just curious.

Maybe they just look at the good part of the Ultimate Universe, Pre-Ultimatum.

@Preheroic
But why go with Miles Morales? You do realize that he's an off shoot of Spider-Man right? I mean why not choose an original character? Here's some ideas of original characters you could have chosen.

Darth258 - 6/25/2014, 5:37 PM
@MarkOfTheDemon: Because Morales is the trend of the moment.. People tend to forget those who came before.
I'll add Luke Cage, Blade and Mr. Terrific to that list of yours.

But you're right, I did miss some characters. Let me fix it.

@SauronsBANE1, I doubt very seriously that Sony refuses to look at Miles Morales because of his ethnicity. If anything, considering the current politically correct environment in Hollywood, I would think Sony executives would view his ethnicity as an advantage. No, the reason is much simpler-money. In pop culture and to the vast, vast majority of comic fans and to general audiences, Peter Parker is the ONLY Spiderman. I would bet if you took a poll of general audiences, over half would have no idea that another Spiderman even existed. So a Spiderman movie with Morales instead of Peter Parker just wouldn't make nearly as much money. In fact, I would bet that it would be a Green Lantern/Lone Ranger type flop.

I'm not sure anyone's really saying we should go STRAIGHT to Miles Morales though. I probably could've worded this better, but my problem is the fact that Arad and the rest of Sony just outright shot down ANY idea that Miles would EVER be in one of their movies. No matter how long the TASM movies go on, no matter how old Andrew Garfield gets, no matter what, they aren't even considering it. And to be perfectly honest, introducing Miles Morales into this franchise would easily be the most interesting thing they've ever done.

But Lhornbk, I think you're seriously over-estimating the "politically correct environment" that's going on in Hollywood. If it were so politically correct, we'd have MANY more movies with female/ethnic directors/producers/executives, or movies with a female lead, with a minority lead, with more representation for women, homosexuals, transgenders, etc etc etc. And basically none of that is happening at all.

With all that in mind, and considering there aren't many successful movies out there with a minority lead, I would have to seriously doubt that they view Morales' race as any kind of "advantage".

I haven't read much of the Ultimate stuff, but what I have read is some of the Miles Morales stuff, and I think he is great. I think when they first announced him fans had a bigger problem with possibly ruining the character by switching his identity rather than having problems with his race.

I've never really been a huge fan of Miles Morales but i was more interested in Peter Parker. Peter Parker is just more appealing and interesting as a character even though a lot of story arcs do ruin the character i mean come on "One More Day" and Peter making a deal with Mephisto, just no, no!!! I can understand why most people love Miles Morales and look up too him.

I would like to see the character in a Spider-man film but i don't want the film to be done by Sony. I just don't trust Sony especially after Spider-man 3 and TASM 2.

I agree there is a lot of variety when it comes to other minority super heroes. Blade is one of my favorites second is Falcon third is Black Panther.
