David Ayer Confirms THE SUICIDE SQUAD's Place In DCEU Continuity

After a lot of speculation as to exactly how it all fits together, original Suicide Squad writer/director David Ayer finally touches on how James Gunn's DC Universe debut fits with the 2016 flick.

Way back when The Suicide Squad was announced, people began speculating about how James Gunn's new movie would fit into the DC Universe canon of films. It's been known for quite some time that Warner Bros. has been hoping to shift the focus from a shared universe to standalone movies, but, given that this new Suicide Squad would see the return of several key players such as Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), it begged the question: is James Gunn creating a sequel to 2016's film?

We now have a definitive answer thanks to David Ayer, the writer and director of the 2016 original.

While discussing his Suicide Squad with some, ahem, "fans," yesterday, David Ayer made it abundantly clear that James Gunn is not continuing the story from where Ayer left off (while offering some enthusiasm for Gunn's work).

He went on to clarify when someone expressed confusion at his answer, asking if the film was a standalone and unbound to the original DCEU continuity:

So it's settled! When 2021 rolls around, The Suicide Squad will be reinvented despite bringing back some of the cast from five years prior.

How do you feel about this news? Is this an early Christmas gift, or a lump of coal? You know where to put your thoughts!

Classy of Ayer to take it in stride.

Too bad his movie was horseshit, hopefully we get a satisfying new version here

@PicolasCage - it’s too bad the movie turned out the way it did. I truly believe he’s a really talented filmmaker. End of watch is such a phenomenal movie, and Fury has some great moments of spectacle, ill be in the theaters for whatever comes next from him. Bright even gets a pass.....not a big one but still a pass lol.

What is this universe's continuity anymore

@Kurne - I'll be honest: I really don't care at all. I would rather have good movies less-than-loosely related rather than forcing bad movies to fit together.

@Kurne - Slowly becoming FoX-Men universe

Yeah, a soft reboot. A reboot that doesn't completely erases everything from its predecessor.

Now The Batman is a little more confusing. I'm guessing it's a prequel soft reboot?

So all that sequel talk was bs

They keep saying this and it still doesn't make any sense. So the DCEU is basically the new equivalent to Fox's X-Men series? There's no point in investing any time into the films because the next one will ignore it anyway.

@whatevtrev - Well... does that mean everything post-Crisis makes everything pre-Crisis unreadable? The stories don't change, and good is always good. If it's a quality flick, then an unrelated sequel won't change it.

There is no DCEU anymore. Forget all about the universe that Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon created. It's being slowly phased out.

@Darkknight2149 - - "Joss Whedon created". Directing extensive reshoots in the 5th DCEU movie is way way far from "creating the DCEU"...

@Moriakum -
The point remains that the Snyderverse is being phased out. I'm not sure why people here are continuing to grasp onto it like it was this successful carefully built universe that DC is now destroying.

The only DCEU actually left is Shazam and Aquaman. Don't be surprised if they get some sort of soft reboot, like WB is doing with Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad.

@whatevtrev -

Not really. Each franchise will stay in continuity to its own films. If anything, The DCEU or whatever
it is, is taking a page out of the Silver Age DC Comics handbook and not even trying to copy what
Marvel was doing with its shared reality.

Every DC book was pretty much it's own universe and its editors and writers were free to do what they thought worked for their individual books. Even crossover books like World's Finest, Justice League of America, and Brave and the Bold, pretty much did their own thing.

@Darkknight2149 - I feel sorry for the non-fans that do watch these films because there confused ass [frick] as much as we are.

That's true, lol. I know people who thought Joker was a prequel to the Jared Leto character.

@Darkknight2149 - As much as I like DC well before 52 series after that its a blur of confusion for me.

I'm hoping one day they will have a clear path.

I keep telling y'all to stop using the word "reboot" and start using the word "relaunch".
