Jai Courtney Says Playing Captain Boomerang In SUICIDE SQUAD Is Like Playing Himself

Jai Courtney has surprised fans with a despicably hilarious take on Captain Boomerang in the trailers for Suicide Squad, and according to the actor, it's not so far from who he actually is...

Jai Courtney has had a rough ride in Hollywood, due in no small part to the bland roles he's been relegated to in films such as Divergent, It's A Good Day To Die Hard, Terminator: Genisys, or Jack Reacher.  That looks set to change when Suicide Squad hits theatres this August; Courtney will take on the role of Flash villain Captain Boomerang, and the actor has made quite an impression with his antics in the trailers. "It's funny because it's, yeah, I mean there's something kind of interesting about, you know, I feel closer to this than anything else," Courtney told ComicBook.com. "But from a sort of performance perspective I mean it may feel like, I mean it's more of a character than anything I've had the opportunity to take on. It's actually closer to myself than any other role I've ever played. Because I'm a bogan piece of sh-t."

The film's producers, Richard Suckle and Andy Horwitz, also have high praise for Courtney's portrayal of Boomerang, noting that the actor's personality was in full swing during production. "Jai Courtney, Captain Boomerang. A great actor and a great guy," Suckle praised. "One of the fun things about this character is that I've not seen every film Jai has made but I've probably seen most of them and I don't think he's ever been able to play a role that allows him to really be funny and he's incredibly funny. He is a wise ass. He's a hunk to a certain extent and he's got an incredible wise cracking sense of humor. At the same time, he is equally dangerous and has these very dangerous boomerangs, one of which he's holding. Now there is a boomerang that is actually a drone boomerang, which plays a role in the movie. He's just a fun character that shakes things up and also has a level of unpredictability as well."

"It's the first time Jai is really going to use his real accent in a movie, and we always say this, Jai is playing Jai," Horwitz added. "His character is based on reality in his real life. He's a whole lot of fun in real life and he's a jokester and he's constantly stirring things up."

You know what they say about the crazy ones. Are you excited to see Courtney play Boomerang? Sound off below! Suicide Squad hits theatres August 5, 2016.

@MattBellissimo - i think the trick is to cast him as an Australian. one of his biggest complaints is his wooden acting, and i blame the accent because i thought he was great in Spartacus.

@ALostCause @MattBellissimo - I actually really liked his performance in Spartacus....so much so, that he was my favorite choice if they wanted to go unknown for Captain America.

I mean, this picture imagined with straight hair is a spot on classic Steve Rogers imo...

But he has most definitely dropped the ball on his own. He had a part in ALL of his big failures...Jack Reacher, Terminator, & Divergent were all somewhat mishandled, but by no means was he a STANDOUT.

I hope for the best for him tho, he'll always be that ride or die homie Varro to me...

"Jai Courtney, Captain Boomerang. A great actor..."

Great actor???

I kid, I kid lol. His best performance was the quiet assassin in Jack Reacher. He was very good as the cold killer of few words.

@ComicsBornAndBred - Actually he's pretty good when he's in the supporting role. In The Water Diviner with Russell Crowe, he played an Australian soldier, and he was great in it. I think the problem has been that he's been picked for the wrong roles.

Ayer found the best role possible for him. Either way, his agent is the best agent in Hollywood if he keeps getting the lead roles in so many movies

@Kr08 - work is work. Can't turn down a good paycheck. I think SS is gonna open people's eyes and they'll see that this guy could be a great character actor.

Never saw The Water Diviner. Not my cup of tea.

@auditore - if captain boomarang gained the almighty power of the boomarang gods, batman would still win.

Jai Courtney is Sam Worthington 2.0, except SS is giving him a chance to escape the "Hopwood is trying to make me happen" shtick, and he can just be seen as a talented supporting actor.

@MattBellissimo - I think Hollywood gave up on him. I thibk they saw a gruff uber masculine guy and thought, "a young Bruce Willis" lol.

I never thought he bad the right swagger to pull off the action hero. Hey, he's got Avatar for the next upteen years so that's good for him.

@ComicsBornAndBred - Oh, I know...but like, I remember the movies were supposed to be out like, this year, and they just keep getting pushed back. I believe the sequels are happening when production actually begins. Cameron is losing interest by the day the more he puts it off. Avatar had the luxury of pioneering the 3D gimmick. It won't have such luck this time, and it's been 6 years.

He is just not a headlining kind of actor. These fun heavy side roles are perfect for him. I am looking forward to his Captain Boomerang a lot.

In acting everyone wants to play the troll under the bridge...
...sometimes though you just don't look like the troll and you get placed in knight in shining armor roles.

Courtney is probably a much better character actor...
...unfortunate for him character actors don't have his looks or abs.
