As has sadly become the norm on social media these days, one "fan" recently took it upon themselves to insult Suicide Squad director David Ayer for absolutely no reason. However, that prompted a response from the filmmaker as he wanted to make it clear that the way things played out for Harley Quinn in the 2016 movie wasn't necessarily his fault.
After Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was released to negative reviews earlier that same year, Warner Bros. made some sweeping changes to Suicide Squad, enlisting multiple editors to try and change the tone of the film. Those attempts to make it a little less dark also saw The Joker's abusive relationship with Harley Quinn end up on the cutting room floor.
That's more than likely what Ayer is referring to here as he talks about her story arc being "eviscerated" and seemingly blames that on "political" reasons.
Clearly, the studio was concerned about portraying Harley being in a relationship like that, as it would have potentially received a sizeable amount of backlash from moviegoers. However, it's thought that she was going to break free from the Clown Prince of Crime by the time all was said and done, something which would have made for a satisfying conclusion to her story arc.
