Jared Leto Praises SUICIDE SQUAD 2 Director But Is Unsure When He'll Play The Joker Again

The response to Jared Leto's take on The Joker in Suicide Squad was mixed but the plan is still for him to reprise the role in at least a couple of upcoming DC Comics adaptations. During a recent chat with Collider, the Oscar-winning actor was asked about both Gavin O'Connor directing the Suicide Squad sequel and whether or not he'll be playing the Clown Prince of Crime in that and Joker/Harley Quinn

While the actor has mentioned in the past that he's planning on returning to the DC Films Universe, he now doesn't sound 100% sure about that but does have plenty of good things to say about O'Connor.

"A lot of moving parts, we’ll see what happens," Leto replied. "I think Gavin is incredibly talented, he seems to be the perfect director for Suicide Squad 2. I think he’s a really gifted filmmaker and I really love his work." Warner Bros. could easily recast the villain but it seems nothing is set in stone and the fate of both Leto's Joker and the movies mentioned above is unclear now. Hopefully, that changes!

@Highflyer - Well, I was thinking that I'd rather see him on the cutting room floor next. Actually, tweak his appearance to be more traditional Joker, give him the right script and right direction and I still give Leto a chance. Ditch the whole "Mexican crime lord", tats and grill. He was menacing in some scenes, especially with Harley before she was Harley.

SS2 should really be a side project. But the numbers the first movie put up monetarily don't lie. I'd love for Leto to stay with some different direction.

Hopefully Gavin O'Connor gets rid of the awful tattoos

@Elayem - Uh, yes along with the grill, the jewelry and the alligator skin coat (or whatever it was). Give me a Joker who is dressed more like Nicholson's and Ledgers. I do like that his appearance is not make-up as it was in TDK, although it worked in that flick.

@RolandD @Elayem - I've been trying to come up with ideas of how they can incorporate cleaning him up into the story, and the best option according to me would be something like this.

This Joker's most beloved feature was his smile. Batman took that away, and not only did he start to view himself as damaged, he became self-conscious about it and became convinced everyone mocked him for being damaged now.
To deal, he had the tattoos done, as a way of "owning" being damaged.
But it's still driving him nuts, and he's actually become kind of scared of the Bat.

During a Batman film of a somewhat smaller scale, we'll see Batman handling crimes of all sorts, with all of it leading back to the Joker, who's running everything from the shadows, becoming increasingly frustrated with the Bat's interference in his business, to the point of where he plans on taking out the Bat by ordering someone else to do it. At this point, he overhears one of his henchman making a joke about the Joker being scare and "afraid to take care of his own business", and the Joker flips and beats the henchman to death with his bare hands, in front of everyone else, while laughing. The henchmen that was ordered to kill the Bat obviously fails, and Joker realizes that he himself must have to face him, and take care of it himself.

So the Joker sets up a trap, that will require the Bat to solve a few mysteries that will lead him right where the Joker wants him. simultaneously, as we see Batman solving the mysteries and falling into the Joker's trap, we see the Joker making himself pretty again for the Batman, starting by fixing his smile, and also taking a bath in some chemical that makes the tattoos dissolve. Then he puts on his tailored purple suit and goes to trap his beloved little Bat.

I don't know, something along those lines could be cool, I think.

@Philip - WB needs to snatch you up as a story and/or screenwriter. I like it.

@Philip - I dig it.
Most important to me is getting rid of the awful tattoos (I never minded the fake teeth) and bringing back the Joker's obsession/love with Batman and not Harley Quinn. Your idea hits both of those.

@Elayem - There's even ways of including Harley that would serve the story well. It'd be a small part, and the purpose would more or less be to show that when it comes down to a choice between Harley and the Batman, Joker will always chose the Bat.

@RolandD - thanks! Tbh if I had my pick I wouldn't even include the Joker in SS2, and instead set up Quuen Bee as the villain of that, with most of the action taking place inside her fortress in Bialya. The squad are sent to do the government's dirty work by executing Bee, because Bialya's at war with a neighboring country that the US has an interest in (probably because of oil, what else), but they become trapped inside and has to fight their way towards Bee, with a few members biting the dust along the way.
I'm thinking a little bit of Die Hard, a little bit of The Rock...something like that.

If Willem Dafoe wasn't already in Aqusman he'd make a grade A Joker. Saw some concept art of him as the Joker and I was at a loss of words.

I'm gonna get trashed for this, but I'll stand by it: Leto had the potential to be the greatest Joker of all time.

Bitch all you want about his methods -- he's an incredible actor. Not only his talent, but his physical appearance was needlessly squandered from the start. He looks exactly like the character from the comics in terms of natural facial structure and build, and there's no reason he shouldn't have given us the unchallenged definitive Joker, other than incompetence and ego issues I suppose...

The problem wasn't just the script, it was the fact he was given free reign and was left to work with a director who had no idea how to handle the character to begin with. Leto would have been unbeatable had he been put in the classic suit and kept on a leash, and acting in a film with an actual screenplay.

@DoctorDoak - couldn’t agree more. TBH I liked his joker, but had he been on a tighter leash and given the proper treatment along with a much better script and more time to shine, he would have been perfect!
