THE SUICIDE SQUAD Director James Gunn On Why Martin Scorsese Is Wrong About Superhero Movies Not Being Cinema

Martin Scorsese is a legendary filmmaker, but he seems to hate superhero movies with a passion. It's hard to escape the feeling that there's an element of jealousy about them performing so much better than his work from a financial standpoint, and The Suicide Squad director James Gunn may have hit the nail on the head in a recent interview.

Talking to Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Gunn shared his thoughts on Scorsese's comments and why he thinks it was "awful cynical" in many respects.

"I just think it seems awful cynical that he would keep coming out against Marvel and then that is the only thing that would get him press for his movie," the filmmaker pondered. "So he just kept coming out against Marvel so that he could get press for his movie. He’s creating his movie in the shadow of the Marvel films, and so he uses that to get attention for something he wasn’t getting as much attention as he wanted for it."

Gunn was quick, however, to make it clear he has no personal animosity with Scorsese and can even relate to where he's coming from...to an extent. "He’s one of the greatest filmmakers who’s ever existed. I love his movies. I can watch his movies with no problem. And he said a lot of things I agree with. There are a lot of things that are true about what he said. There are a lot of heartless, soulless, spectacle films out there that don’t reflect what should be happening."

Some sites took the Guardians of the Galaxy director's words out of context, so he later took to Twitter to clarify his remarks and make it clear he has only one issue with Scorsese; his opinion that "films based on comic books are innately not cinema."

The Suicide Squad arrives in theaters and on HBO Max later today. Read our review here

Even if its not cinema, its definitely art. The amount of work that goes into VFX, score, etc. is still something thats great, no matter the type of movie

@bkmeijer - Let's be honest here. Scorsese is an idiot for making this comment, and James Gunn is 100% correct. Scorsese made these comments to poo poo a genre at the top of the industry in an attempt to get some eyes on his movie. Thats all.

And I say he's an idiot for one reason. There are only two definitions of the word cinema:

1. A location that plays movies. (Obviously this isn't what Scorsese was talking about.)

2. The production of movies as an art or industry.

Clearly he was talking about the 2nd definition. Which is just stupid because creating ANYTHING is a form of art. And comic book movies are definitely being created as part of the movie industry.

So by definition, Scorsese is wrong. 200% wrong. Its his jealousy of another genre being at the top of the industry right now, and his tired gangster movies being in the shadow of, that is causing to be a hater.

@TyrantBossMedia - I'll be honest, I'm a huge gamer, but story is a bonus to me. I've been playing video games since I was a kid of 5, so about 34 years. I remember when the only story we got was a page or two in the instruction manual lol.

So first and foremost, I really only care if a video game is fun and well made. And not only that, but a lot of video games have abysmal stories.

BUT......you're totally right. There are a lot of games with great stories that are done with a fantastic production level that rival a lot of movies these days. The first Last of Us comes quickly to mind. Even The Last of Us 2, even though some of the story decisions were were questionable for me, had an incredible amount of work done and was incredible. The Halo series is a favorite of mine. God of War.

End of the day....its all art. This same debate about what qualifies for art has been asked of the video game industry for decades. So in my opinion, anything that is being created is a form of art.

I’ve always just boiled the Scorsese comments down to age.

There were directors in Germany and France who looked down at American and Italian spaghetti westerns as not being “real” Cinema.

It wasn’t because they were dicks, they just didn’t get the connection with why an younger audience wanted to watch it more than their films.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - Yeah, pretty much this. Although Gunn’s probably not wrong about Scorsese using the opportunity to drum up press about his own movie.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - I'm from Germany and a lot of germans like Italian spaghetti westerns, specially Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill movies (and Clint Eastwood of course), they are damn popular in Germany

@WaffeX - nah of course they do now! I was just saying back then, the general consensus was to hate on them, especially when the Germans and French were making cultural masterpieces in their own rights!

I have family in Germany and my Grandad is English but he settled over there and he used to say when he went over there at first on deployment in the 70s/80s, he would be amazed at the Germans people capability to ignore pop culture - but joked about how David Hasselhoff made it big in the 90s over there when he was washed up in pop culture over here lol!

I have loved most of Scorsese's films but his remarks really pissed me off and showed his hypocrisy. I still remember all the hateful things his film "The Last Temptation of Christ" received by many who even steadfastly refused to see the film and judge it for themselves. He and other old timers like Francis Ford Coppola are basically doing to Marvel movies in particular and super hero movies at large exactly what others did to him and his film when he released it. And if I remember right, he and others weren't to happy about the backlash he received then.

@Mugens - Agree 100%.

And what did Marty say back then, "I tried" (referring to watching these super hero films) by watching some of one of them? I "tried" to enjoy his violent films about violent people doing violent things to others, and The Last Temptation of Christ is the only film he's done that I can stomach watching a second time (I actually have it on Criterion Blu-ray).

@TyrantBossMedia - It shouldn't piss me off but it does mainly because I actually like Scorsese and his films so much. Or should I just say I'm extremely disappointed with his take on things. And I know why his film was so controversial at the time, and even now but that should not matter. You can't just shit on one particular genre sight unseen, justified or not, and cry foul when others do it to you. Pure hypocrisy is all I'm saying.

@manofillintent1 - yeah. At this point we're the only ones continuing this. He's an old man, just let him have his opinion and move on. He stopped bringing it up, and it's not like he's insulting both the writers and fanbase of comic books and comic book media in the wake of a popular comic book writers death (yeah I don't know why the bill Maher situation was never brought up here but Scorsese kept coming up).

Complicated that Gunn accuses Scorsese of using the topic to promote his movies, when he has his own movie to promote. You can say "but that's when he gets interviewed" - same thing goes for Scorsese.

Everyone gets their opinions. Scorsese is clearly a bit bitter because the thinking man's movie gets thinking man's praise; average shump on the street would choose Harry Potter over the Godfather. That's the world you live in.

The secret is you can actually enjoy them both, and if it's on in your movieplex then it gets to be called "cinema." What does boggle my mind sometimes is that a movie maker has to understand the complexity of what Marvel has achieved - and look how hard it is, everyone else wants to do it but they can't get past 1-2 movies - and yet the connections between the movies are still largely written off as "something to please the fanboys," even by critics.

Scorsese was being ignorant and was very much in the wrong 2 years ago and this topic shouldn't have lasted more than a month back then. Absolutely no reason to still be asking about this in 2021

I find it sad how you need to establish that you're at least aware of Scorcese's wikipedia credits, before daring to publicly disagree with his Marvel comments. If you don't, hell is reigned down on you and all you are is a blind/sensitive fan. Which couldn't be any more ironic.

The superiority complexes people adopted by hiding behind him and challenging everyone else was the most distasteful shit I witnessed. It's like they got off on it.
Blergh
Blergh - 8/5/2021, 5:26 AM
@Kurne - I didn't quite understand the need to hide behind his comments to validate an opinion. If someone doesn't like superhero movies that's fine, you don't need a prolific filmmaker to agree with your opinion to validate it.
