THE SUICIDE SQUAD Director James Gunn Open To HARLEY QUINN Movie; Teases PEACEMAKER's Sci-Fi Story

The Suicide Squad director sounds keen to return to the DC Extended Universe after Peacemaker (a show he's revealed plenty of new details about), but could he take the helm of a Harley Quinn spinoff?

The Suicide Squad has received some of the best reviews of James Gunn's filmmaking career, and while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is next for him, there are already rumblings of a DCEU return.

We know Gunn is currently working on Peacemaker in post-production, and while he's teased a second season, The Hollywood Reporter recently had another suggestion for the director. It was put to him that he has "a knack" for writing Harley Quinn and could add the interviewer to those who'd like to see him helm a movie featuring the character, and Gunn seemed to be on board with the idea.

"Yeah, I think I do, actually. I really feel that character, and as I’ve said before, I’ve taken a lot of characters from the comic books who either have slightly different personalities or not as clearly defined personalities. I’ve really shied away from the really popular characters because I like creating characters," he explained. "I don’t generally like interpreting characters that are already fully actualized, but with Harley, that was a different thing. I really do love Paul Dini’s original vision, and I felt like I was able to become Harley while I was writing. And it’s a terrible, wonderful place to be."

As for a possible DCEU return, he added: "We’re always talking about different things, too, so there’s a lot of dreaming going on and dreaming is one of the most fun parts of moviemaking."

That's a little non-commital, but Gunn was willing to talk a little more about his plans for Peacemaker. Explaining that "it's no holds barred," he went on to shed some light on what we can expect. "One of the leads is Peacemaker and one of the leads is Danielle Brooks, who plays Leota Adebayo. And she has a very different political view of the world than Peacemaker does. So it’s just a little bit about what’s going on in the world, but also being a TV show, you really do have more time to delve much deeper into these characters and much more deeply into the drama and comedy of them."

"It has a lot of similarities [to The Suicide Squad], but it’s even more grounded, more natural and more real. But it’s still within a big science-fiction storyline that lasts for one season. The main storyline lasts for that season, so that doesn’t mean there’s only one season of Peacemaker."

It's hard to complain about Gunn being part of both the MCU and DCEU for the forseeable future, but he's definitely going to have a busy couple of years once he's finished promoting The Suicide Squad. The filmmaker has said on multiple occasions that he views Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as the conclusion to that story, so whether Kevin Feige can tempt him back remains to be seen.

Gunn should just make a movie called the Crazy Adventures of Harley Quinn & Kite Man. That or maybe Gotham City Sirens, but that probably already goes against his shying away from popular characters.

Loved the movie but Harley started to run out of things to do by the second act.

So she survives then (fvck).

Let Matt Reeves reboot her. Then we talk.

Wonder if they could get Arleen Sorkin to play Harley’s mom

@dracula -
I can imagine Harley having a Christmas adventure. She returns to her mother's house for Christmas and she kisses Ivy under the mistletoe. XD

A bunch of DC assassins trying to kill Harley at her mom's house during Christmas sounds pretty [frick]ing good.

Not dying to see a new Harley movie a all, but it would be nice if one was really done right since the previous one was, well let's just say lacking in more than a few ways. So if one has to be done, and the WB is going to milk her character (no pun intended) for all she's worth, then I believe giving the reins to Gunn on a future standalone film would be for the best.

Eh. I feel that when it comes to live-action, Harley works best as a supporting character. Too much of her, and it gets annoying really fast.

Don’t get me wrong, the is the first time in the films the character was actually fun and not horribly grating. With that said I don’t need to see her outside of maybe another suicide squad from him

Gunn had the best interpretation of Harley so far, but you could really feel that it was the studio's choice to have her in the film as she never really clicked with the rest of the film.

Sounds like Harley is awesome in this. Can’t wait!

I liked Harley a lot in TSS but I don’t need another film based around her. She’s best as a side character.
