How Come Clark Can't Fight?

Now that we got that out of way here's one thing that always bothered me about Superman. Why can't this dude fight without his powers?

I'm a huge Superman fan for starters. The whole shindig. The world biggest boy scout. He fights for truth, justice.. all that stuff! lol. and Yes, I cried when he died. When I was kid that stuff was real to me. And like all Superman fans I fell down my stairs trying to fly.

Now that we got that out of way here's one thing that always bothered me about Superman. Why can't this dude fight without his powers? I never understood that. He's the most powerfuul superhero on earth, but without his power this dude can't hurt a fly. Don't misunderstand me. I didn't say "Wouldn't" hurt a fly. I said "Can't". It's physically impossible for him. In Superman 2 when he wanted to dedicate his life to being with Lois. He sacrificed his powers for love(Gay). He thought it was a good Idea until an Average joe kicked his ass and took his seat. After that he said "No way! I can't be getting my ass kicked infront my woman. So, he had to WALK back to his Fortress in a blizzard to get his powers back just so he can go back to the diner and get revenge. Without his powers he didn't even put up a fight, but he can't slam the hell out of a bloody towel.

I didn't really think much of it until it happened again in Superman Returns! When he was on the island made of krytonite. He made it there and felt a little weak. He got in Lex Luthors face and Lex Pushed him down a flight of stairs or down a hill. and that's when Kumar and the boys proceeded to beat his ass. Heres the part that trip me out. The island made him so weak he could'nt beat up four guys. but he somehow mustard up the strength to lift that entire island and toss it into Space. Why can't this guy fight without his powers? This guy weighs about 225lbs and he's a muscular dude but he's weak as F**K without his powers. I'm only 147lbs and I think I can take superman without his powers. All I'm saying is I know he's alot weaker without his powers but don't make him look like a Wussy without them. Give him fighting lessons.

I'm going to try to seriously answer your question here:

Think about it from his perspective. These aren't powers to him, it's just the way he is. He isn't stronger due to "powers" acquired through life, he just IS that strong, it's all he's ever known. Now imagine how it would feel to suddenly have that strength torn away? Even if that leaves him with the strength of the average Joe it would be almost crippling to him. To suddenly feel the weight of your own body, the exhaustion of walking through snow, etc. it's a huge shock to the system.

His strength isn't muscular, if it was then he would keep it, kryptonite or not. Most of (if not all) his strength comes from the energy that radiates within him. Therefore he doesn't use his muscles the same way we do. All his exploits will probably tone the muscles but not strengthen them in any way. This means, over time his muscle strength will waste away. This is based on my knowledge of how muscles work and waste away, my daughter has Muscular Dystrophy (a muscle wasting disease) so I know a fair bit.

As for the island lifting scene, I'm tired of explaining this so I'll just skip over the main points you need to consider.

-Where does his power come from? The sun. Not only does he bathe himself in it, he burns through cloud, water and rock to keep himself in the suns rays permanently.

-How does kryptonite affect him? It doesn't kill him outright, it's like a poison draining his energy. Too much of it over too much time will kill.

-So, he is being drained of energy by the island but this effect is reduced due to sunlight. What he is doing is the equivalent of an average man/woman resisting the effects of smoke inhalation to get their family out of a burning building and then collapsing once the adrenaline has worn off.

Watch the scene with that in mind and it makes perfect sense.

Hope that helps!

Holy Rusted metal Ron Burgundy! I've never seen a question answered with so much intellect. Well put!

Well, that's because I'm a man! A man that built the Eiffel Tower out of brawn and steel! I have a larger brain than a woman, it's science!

i don't know why he can't fight. you would think it would only help when fighting someone like darkseid or brainiac. he could even have batman teach him.

CorndogBurglar - I do remember one episode of Lois & Clark where Superman did in fact take self defence classes to help him beat up some ninja with a special amulet, or something.

I lost you at "Lois & Clark" didn't I?! The one show where Clark was tougher than Superman! Oh, Dean Cain, what did you do! You got it the wrong way around!

CorndogBurglar - That's understandable, I have a voice that can make a wolverine purr and suits so fine they make Sinatra look like a hobo. In other words, I am the balls and my opinion is like a miniature Buddha, covered with hair!

@ ron

lolololol, jesus man...do you have a writer or something?? hysterical

and by the way, my sister used to love lois and clark, so unfortunately i watched it with her...ugh.

"lets make a show about clark kent, and only show superman in every episode for like 5 minutes." i guess its better than smallville, a show about superman becoming superman, but with no superman in the entire show. did i just say lois and clark is better than smallville?? hmmmm...they both suck, oh well

CorndogBurglar - I have a team of Howler Monkeys typing for me 22 hours a day (I give them 2 hours rest, I'm no monster!). Most of the stuff is garbage but if I cattle prod them enough I get a few gems from time to time.

I agree with Ron. It's because he isn's used to struggling, he takes his powers for granted in a sense.

Yep, Ron is correct basicly Superman is a wimp, without his powers he would struggle to beat off a fly!

i like superman but this is the reason Goku [DB(Z)] would win in a fight with superman. Goku also has superpowers but Goku has trained in martial arts his whole life.
