Christopher Nolan Talks Batman 3 And Superman

In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, Nolan talks a bit about what inspired him to get involved with the latest incarnation of Superman, as well as his thought process on moving on to Batman 3 after TDK..

In this months issue of Empire, Christopher Nolan talks about his latest movie Inception. But he also briefly mentions his much discussed but rarely quoted involvement with the Superman reboot as well as a chat he had with David Goyer when they were trying to figure out where to go after The Dark Knight.

He doesn't go into too much detail, and no plot details are revealed, but its nice to hear the notoriously tight lipped director talk about these much anticipated projects...

"..What it is, while David Goyer and myself were putting together the story for another Batman film a few years ago, you know thrashing out where we might move on from the Dark Knight, we got stuck. We were just sitting there idly chatting and he said ”by the way, I think know how you approach Superman".. and he told me his take on it. I thought it was really tremendous. It was the first time I’ve been able to conceive of how you’d address Superman in a modern context I thought it was a really exciting idea. What you have to remember about Batman and Superman is that what makes them the best superhero characters there are, the most beloved after all this time, is the essence of who they were when they were created, when they were first developed. You can’t move too far away from that."

Nice to hear that Nolan thinks the characters should remain mostly true to their origins. Does that mean we will have to see Supes exodus from Kryton again? Maybe. But hey, I can live with that as long as we have another villain instead or as well as Lex this time around. Also, the fact that he is so heavily involved in Superman and directing the next Batman really gives hope to an eventual cross over I think.

Keep an eye on CBM for more on both of these projects soon, and check out the latest issue of Empire for the full interview and some revealing details about Inception.

I'm excited for this movie, but I am a little worried.I do like his take on Batman, but it's far removed from the character we know from the comics and the cartoons. When he says they figured out how to approach Superman, you know that means they're going to change some things to make it more realistic.

Now, that works with Batman. They made him less of a genius than he is in the comics, less of an unbeatable fighter and more like a skilled but normal man. They also gave him a realistic suit and weaponry. But, with Superman, there's not much you can deviate from. He's an alien with godlike powers. That's who he is.

I'm a little worried that they may take all the sci-fi and fantasy out of the character.I can see them going straight up realistic by just doing the story of an alien crashlanding on Earth, and discovering his powers.I'm sure their Superman will compliment their Batman.I guess that's cool, but I don't really see the point, when it seems the Green Lantern movie is going all out sci-fi/fantasy.

Well, however it turns out, I can't wait.

Nolan is the right man for the job, he'll use the money they give him in the right way. he wont just take the money and then do whatever he wants (*cough* Ratner *douche*). Give him the money WB and stand back.

I agree with you, he is the best director in the past 12 years.

I can't wait for inception and I can't wait for Nolan's take on super man and Batman 3.

Tazmaniac, I can't tell what you are complaining about, "I can see them going straight up realistic by just doing the story of an alien crashlanding on Earth, and discovering his powers," What the hell is that? It's neither realistic nor a far deviation from the comics. Just sit back and see what happens.

Lex Luthor should be in it but not the main villian. I think Smallville had the best Lex. Something along the lines of the New Krypton story line would be awesome.
Maybe later in the franchise. Now we need a movie that can establish the new superman franchise & also bring him & The Bat together.

I'd still like to see what the Wachowskis could do with Supes... or better yet JJ Abrams. Not if he writes of course, just straight up directs. Lets not forget to keep Routh around! He still has the "innocence" in his looks to handle an Exodus.
tazmaniak
tazmaniak - 6/3/2010, 9:51 AM
"No, sadly Nolan have already said that Batman and Superman live in their own world, and there will be no crossover."

When it comes down to it, it's not up to him, it's up to WB.We all know they're working towards a Justice League movie, so I'm sure they'll insist he connect the movies.

I just realized how many A-listers will be in movies in 2012.

Batman
Superman
Spider-Man
Wolverine
Captain America
Iron Man
Thor
Hulk
Nick Fury

Guys I really think Nolan may have reconsidered his stance no that he's "sheparding" Superman. I mean DC Entertainment have said that they aim to cross over characters a la Avengers at some point right? Well what would they be waiting for? Nolan is involved with both projects..if they are smart(IF), they will jump on this opportunity.

I also wish Routh had of stayed on, but its extremely unlikely even though he has said he would be willing to reprise any time.

Excellent find ROR! It's great to finally hear a little more about both Batman 3 and the Superman reboot! Nolan is most definitely the best guy to handle both of these franchises and if he can help to combine the two characters into one universe in order to help do what Marvel Studios have done, that'd be awesome! My concern though is whether Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern will fit in with Nolan's surely more serious vision...

johan02: I most definitely disagree with what MsKyle said but you need to chill out dude! :P

I was going to comment on how off beat MsKyle08's comment was, but then Johan went into the deep end of a dark, dark place whence there is no coming back from ... Dude, take a chill pill and stand still before you type any more insulting remarks to one of our favorite members. Sure that was a CRAZY statement, but relax bro. It's a fictional character and there is no need to insult the lady like that.

@MsKyle08 - WTF?????

I am remaining hopeful that even though Nolan did make the statement of them not being in the same universe (Bats and Supes), WB and he will find a way to merge the two, and setting up a future meeting with GL and the rest of the league!!!

Hopefully they get this movie right this time. I think the Nolans can do it. I want a doomsday or daekseid movie. I would like Zod but lets bring in a villian that hasn't been on the big screen yet. Lex cameo would be cool 2.

@Anil - "superman does not kill but ironically, he doesnt stick to the rule as closely as batman does" Are you suggesting that Kal-El breaks the "no killing" rule more often than the Dark Knight? I'm confused ...

Minotauro
Minotauro - 6/3/2010, 10:41 AM
@Ror - What makes you think this "crossover" stuff is what DC wants. Following Marvel in their charade to make movies connect up to one big block buster isn't a way to go.. Besides that, does "Avengers" spell flop critically all over it? I'm expecting a 39% on rotten tomatoes, and a 6.2 on Imdb.. So?..

Making a Justice League movie??.. Will have to see how successful Avengers is..

I'm almost positive Batman has never killed anyone or willingly let them die. That's the one thing that bothered me about Batman Begins.
