Comic Book Readers And Lovers Should Be Better Than The Normal Movie Going Audience

What’s up CBM? Long time reader, first time author and commenter on this site. I wanted to write this to say why I think that true comic book readers have an advantage, not to say that the GA isn’t cool too, they definitely are, and a lot of the GA are very nice, attractive smart, and wealthy, but I don’t think they will ever enjoy CBMs like us, so we have that going for us….

Some Guy:  Ugh, obvious click bate title that has nothing to do with the actual article….

Me:  I’ll try to connect the dots if you keep reading….

One of the greatest things about comics and how they progress over the years is that we get the chance to see an infinite amount of different incarnations of our favorite characters.  We also get to see an infinite amount of incarnations of our least favorite characters, which can often give us a new appreciation for them.  Then there’s the fun in tearing apart everything that the writers and artist has done, or admiring their work, but the majority of the time, you can walk away feeling something and be entertained in some way.

One of the things that I don’t like, and that I see happening on here a lot, and that I can do absolutely nothing about, is google.  It's cool in a way, but in another way, it's really not....

Find a picture online, do a google image search, and automatically you have cliff notes for every character every created in a comic book.  In the right hands, this can be a great thing, but on here, for a site like this, it’s just confusing.  It feels like someone is using a cheat code or something like that, and their googling for the sole purpose of winning an argument, because their making statements that seem relevant but they don’t really know what their saying because they have never read the comic books, they have only read a summary on Wikipedia.

Which is perfectly cool, but if your not sure what your saying is true, don't post on here, or ask questions, I'm sure that there are a lot of people and fans that know their stuff on this site and they would be more than happy to help.

And, I know that I'm asking too much, and google is a staple in our society right now, I'm just ranting.

With that said, one of the reasons that I bring this up, is the recent Batman v Superman trailer, and the initial interpretation of Lex that we are seeing.

Lex is my favorite character, for more reasons than one, and the trailer and Jesse’s interpretation of Lex will capture everything that I love about the character.

Do I love Lex’s mech suit in the comics?  Yes and no, not really, it was cool at first, but it’s actually a bit played out, especially due to the fact that mech suit or not, if Lex doesn’t have Kryptonite, Superman wins.  The mech suit works well in the comics, and it would definitely be fun to see on screen, but we don’t need to and actually shouldn’t see the mech suit, especially not for the initial introduction to Lex.  The mech suit comes much later.

Some Guy:  You don’t like the mech suit, well, What should we see then, for this initial version, since your so well versed on the character, huh, huh??  When is Lex going to smoke a Cigar, huh, huh??

Me:  Alright, I do like the mech suit, why don’t you work on your reading comprehension…..

Some Guy:  I’m trying, starts to sob….

Me:  …. Takes a shot of whiskey ….

Initially, we should see a Lex Luthor before Superman.  Lex Luthor before Superman is completely different than Lex Luthor after Superman.  When I read the comments on here, that’s what people mean when they say evolution, they mean character progression, and that is exactly what we will be getting in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”, we will be watching Lex Luthor the Winner, with his whole life ahead of him, become Lex Luthor the Loser (Spoiler, ha) with Superman and the Justice League watching his every move and ready to take action.

What does this mean?  It means that as crazy and smart, and insane and two faced and jealous as the Lex Luthor in the trailer seems, he will get even crazier, and jealous, more insane, but most of all he will get ANGRY, because Lex doesn’t take well to losing.

So, in my opinion, they are doing Lex’s origin justice without a doubt in my mind.  This is actually exactly what I want to see on screen, and Jesse is a perfect candidate for the role.

If Lex started out as evil and more sinister and more intimidating, in his initial introduction, what would happen after he loses, what would there be to look forward too except for more of the same….

I think there’s really 2 questions for true comic book fans to answer regarding Eisenberg and Lex…. (because let’s be honest, the GA really won’t care about any of this)

Can Jesse Eisenberg play Lex Luthor before he loses to Superman?

Yes.

Can Jesse Eisenberg play Lex after he loses to Superman?

My opinion is Yes, but, as of now, this is unknown.

Can Jesse Eisenberg play an angry, jealous, and obsessed person on screen?  Jealous and obsessed without a doubt, but can Jesse play angry and intimidating.  Again, in my opinion, yes, he definitely can, but I can understand how this can cause some mix in opinions.

So, that’s how I feel, I wrote this up pretty quickly, so hopefully it makes sense.  I can’t wait for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and the rest of the DCEU, the trailer got me even more hyped than I was before….

I also love that Batman v Superman is going to explore who Lex is as a scientist too, I can’t wait!!

What do you think?

Some Guy:  This article is a waste of space and should be thrown in the trash….

Me:  Leave me alone guy!

Hahaha, welcome to the site man

I agree with everything your saying about Lex, totally. And, we have never seen Lex Luthor's origin get the big screen treatment like this before, showing Lex before and after will make his future appearances in the DCEU that much more enjoyable.

Look at how Zod's arc is progressing in Batman v Superman, I can't wait to see how Lex's story and his character will develop in the DCEU. Other than the character interactions, and stories, that's one of the major points of a cinematic universe in the first place, to watch as these characters develop and react to the world around them.

I love what their doing with Lex and Batman v Superman looks incredible, can't wait!

great first article. you are right we should be better but you are missing the point. Usually the people who drum on about comic book accuracy while dissing dc are marvel fanboys (specifically the disney ones). They are not really interested in comic book accuracy its just an excuse to slur. Once you understand this you will understand that some of the actions stop being irrational but simply spiteful.
Its Ok for disney marvel to make sweeping changes to the mandarin, ultron origins, yellow jacket, even the vilains in iron man 1 and 2(yes none of the iron man movies have comic book accurate villains) but if oyu change anything in the DC world these people will publish 20 articles and rant abhout it so much the irony is that they dont care in that way, the idea is simply to perpetuate and spread negativity about other studios products.

the reason you dont read 20 articles everytime marvel changes something is because most of the fans of the other studios are adult about it, the disney side or marvel trolls everyone else and it is incredibly appalling to see.

if you look at comic book movies before Disney got involved there were always small or slight changes to modernise the characters or their situation. Xmen came in and did well and all fans cheered, spiderman did well and all fans cheered. Only when disney came in that they really wanted to push a rivalry, everything they or their actors or fans do is simply in bad taste. You got to ask those made up viewing numbers for civil war why was it released right before the batman v superman trailer? it was purely to set things against each other when in reality the company should be pushing as hard as possible to avoid this comparison because in the end both studios lose. these movies could be big the only way the genre will implode is if people keep taking shots at each other.

In the Brazil Comic-con Michael Wilkinson confirm Lex evolves!!

Already on the panel, Wilkinson talked about Lex Luthor , revealing that the look of the villain will evolve throughout the film and that Luthor appear in other films of the DC .

Also, a new image of Wonder-Woman (with her lasso) was showed

More information from Comic-Con Experience in Brazil (confirmed by Michael Wilkinson):

- Indeed is a dream sequence
- Flash cameo confirmed
- Aquaman will have two costumes

@soforizo

@Desr0w 's comment and the fact that this Lex hasn't lost to Superman yet in the beginning of the movie, definitely serve as evidence

I don't understand how you could think that Lex will act the same as he does in the beginning of this movie, after he loses to Superman, that doesn't make sense.

Lex won't even be able to do the same things that he does, his public image will even be affected. He's going to become someone else, that's what losing to Superman does to him

@soforizo

How can this be Lex after Superman, when he hasn't even lost to Superman yet?

No offense, but that doesn't make sense. Lex will definitely change, that's a core part of his characterization, and origin

He has not lost to Superman yet.

If he did he wouldn't be able to create "Doomsday", invite Bruce Wayne and Clark to a party, etc, etc, etc.... his public image would have changed, and he would be locked up

He's going to change, and he's in multiple films in the DCEU.

People worry too much. He'll change to dark and twisted after his accident. That's usually how the comics went.

Not disagreeing with what was said, but the main problem with the character might not be the claimed inaccuracy but the simple fact that he sounds annoying and cartoney on an otherwise tonaly somber movie. All around he just seems like such a pest rather than a threat.

@soforizo

I disagree. To each his own.

I don't understand how you think Lex will act the same after not only losing but being incarcerated, and beaten to the point that he lost so badly, that he would have to change his image in the public's eye, and for himself to cope

If you don't think Eisenberg can do it, that's understandable. I think he can though.... but if you think the writers are just going to forget that he lost, and what that would mean to him.... that doesn't make sense

The intention is obviously for him to change

I agree 100 percent with this article, Lex is my favorite comic villain, and Jesse is doing a engaging rendition of the character. Makes you want to slap him in the face.

@Youareallstupid are you sure you actually know the character, because other than the performance I could easily see S:TAS Lex saying that "3 syllables word" line, that's how he speaks.

?t=34s

Lex's line about "devils coming from the sky" could've been ripped from a Morrison comic. Lex is a professional solicitor, when written best he has a way with words. That's why the public refuses to believe he's evil.

It looked like he wanted to evolve, but something stopped it!

I was getting the same thoughts lol.

Yup the usual fanboys on this site want this movie to fail so bad! Zack and Co. is showing us a piece of the movie. I know people are crying and bitchin that the whole movie was shown in the last trailer. WTF.....what 3 minute movies have you been watching?

Also we will see Lex turn into the cold hearted evil person pulling the strings in the shadows!

And there are so many questions that need to be answered from all the trailers we have seen.

1. What is that the dream sequence all about?

2. Why is Princess Diana/WW visiting Metropolis?

3. How is Doomsday created?

4. How do Batman and Superman actually realize they are on the same side of justice?

5. Actually what is going on with Batman and his psyche regarding Robin......is Robin dead?

6. How is Aquaman going to play into this movie?

There are so many questions that have yet to be answered.......Again the movie is not 3 minutes long........

@soforizo

To each his own.... but

You think that it's "wishful thinking" that the writers will address the drastic change that Lex will go through after Batman v Superman?

You think that the writers won't address how losing affects Lex and his psyche as the DCEU movies progress?

Again, that doesn't make sense.
TexasAvenger
TexasAvenger - 12/6/2015, 8:34 AM
This is a good article and while there is a chance that this Lex will change his demeanor throughout the movie and future movies, the problem for me is that it's still Jesse Eisenberg playing him. His delivery is awful and awkward, so it leads me to believe that Eisenberg is essentially playing himself. Just like in every movie I've seen him in.
