With more rumours swirling about Henry Cavill's future as Superman in the DCU, DC Studios' James Gunn has made it clear we shouldn't believe anything we hear online until official announcements are made.

There are a lot of good and bad things about social media (it's leaning more towards the latter with Elon Musk now in charge of Twitter), but the rise of so-called movie "scoopers" has become a real pain.

With James Gunn and Peter Safran now in charge of DC Studios, there's a lot of excitement about what they have planned. The Suicide Squad director has said they will present their plan to Warner Bros. Discovery in the coming months, but we're seeing an increase in rumours about what that slate will eventually look like.

One site recently posted a story claiming that Henry Cavill has signed a new contract to appear in Superman across film and television projects, prompting Gunn to respond in an effort to set the record straight.

"I’m not sure if you’re purposely lying or being taken advantage of by someone lying to you, but, as I’ve stated on here before, NO ONE knows what’s happening at DC Studios right now other than me [and] Peter," the filmmaker confirmed. "That would include writing up any new contracts for anyone at this point."

Earlier this month, one of the trades reported that Cavill currently has no deal in place to return as Superman again after Black Adam. While there have been talks of a Man of Steel sequel, it will be down to Gunn and Safran to decide whether that's something they want to move forward with alongside the British actor.

We can't imagine either of them would be keen to kick off the DCU by earning the wrath of fans, something ditching Cavill would inevitably lead to. For now, though, it's obvious anything we hear about this franchise's future that doesn't come directly from Gunn and Safran is way off base.

What are your hopes for the DCU's future?

At this point they’d be nuts not to sign Cavill 😂

Them and their lawyers and I bet a bunch of other people. Also bring on Man of Steel 2 and don't make it campy and stupidly funny. Keep it real. Funny doesn't equal optimistic. Sometimes it means stupid.

@Nemesis17then - The thing is I didn't really like the new Batman film and it seemed super serious to me and normally I like DC films.

@rkshuttleworth - I enjoyed it but it could have benefitted from about 20-30 minutes being cut out.

Can't wait for Gunn to announce the new DC Studios slate

Probably at Comic Con

It will feel like when Fegie did it all the way back in 2014 for Phase 3

Either they're ironing out the details on a new Superman movie with Cavill, or the Black Adam post credit scene was a waste of time. There's no in-between.

@GhostDog - perfect scenario would have been to have used reeves' universe as a foundation for a new dcu as the old one phases out, but that's def not gonna happen.
knowing gunn, i guess we can expect to see a lot more of margot as harley lol.

@tmp3 - yea the Batman would’ve been a beyond decent standard of a foundation but I get the feeling reeves wants to be left alone.

The hard on for Harley I will never understand

Gunn needs to plan everything out and start revealing shit a bit at a time then announce movies at comic con next year.

Hopefully he announces a Lobo movie or show.

i don't find cavill to be a particularly compelling actor, but if he can get mcquarrie on-board it'll be worth it.

There two things we can never get right a Superman movie and a Superman video game.

i ain't holding my breath with DC right, been burned before lol but James is one creative son of a bitch so i'll be interested in what he can do with DC.

Just give me a great Green Lantern movie.

It's complicated. Gunn could plan to do Superman without Cavill and tell no actor. But if he wanted to use Cavill in his plans, he would need to ask him before spending time planning to have him in a project.

He could assume Cavill would do at least one movie. But would Cavill want to do just one movie or more? Gunn would need to know before mapping things out because without Cavill they need to reboot Superman again.

If Cavill doesn't do anything else as Superman after that Black Adam cameo, nobody will ever take DC seriously again. They have to be working out a deal, and WB must be aware that Cavills Superman was a huge reason BA did as well as it did. Even The Rocks star power struggled to save that movie.
