DC Studios' First Movie, SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY, Is Getting A Theatrical Release This Year

Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story will receive a theatrical release after bringing the movie to CinemaCon yesterday. You can find more details after the jump...

Superman: The Movie inspired a generation of filmmakers and Christopher Reeve's take on the Man of Tomorrow remains a benchmark for every other actor who follows in his footsteps to try and reach.

In 1995, Reeve was tragically left paralyzed from the shoulders down after being thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition. He continued acting, though, and raised awareness for several worthy causes before passing away in 2004.

Warner Bros.' CinemaCon presentation brought little in the way of DCU news yesterday evening, but DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran was on hand to give the Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story documentary "the launch it deserves."

As a result, it's now set to soar into theaters this September!

The first movie released under the DC Studios banner will explore Reeve's life and features insights from filmmaker Richard Donner, those who worked with him, and the actor's children.

"Everyone at Warner Bros. Discovery is incredibly proud to come together as one company to partner with Christopher Reeve’s family and the filmmakers behind 'Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story' and bring his personal journey to audiences the world over," a Warner Bros. Discovery spokesperson said in a statement.

"WBD’s DC Studios, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, HBO, CNN Films and Max are grateful for the opportunity to honor one of our company’s most cherished creative partners and to celebrate Christopher’s rich life and career."

The studio snapped up the documentary for $15 million at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and, last year, Reeve's daughter Alexandra Reeve Givens, dropped some hints about what Superman fans can look forward to.

"One of the joys is that they uncovered so much archival footage," she said. "So there’s the outtakes from the original audition for Superman, interviews with dad from the ’70s and ’80s when we were still young kids."

"Seeing him at the height of fame and even old home movies we hadn’t spent much time with - suddenly we’re uncovering these moments and seeing them on the big screen. All of that woven together has been really beautiful and powerful," Alexandra added.

In Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, never-before-seen home movies and extraordinary personal archives reveal how Christopher Reeve went from unknown actor to iconic movie star as the ultimate screen superhero. He learned the true meaning of heroism as an activist after suffering a tragic accident that left him quadriplegic and dependent on a ventilator to breathe.

Stay tuned for updates on Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story as we have them.

I’ll definitely be checking this out when i can!!.

Man , I know he had already declined roles in big films and wanted to work on smaller ones with more complex characters in his mind but it’s interesting to imagine the career he could have had if his injury didn’t force him to pretty much retire from acting…

However then , we could have been robbed of the hero he became offscreen aswell as he helped many people with disabilities and became a true activist for various causes thus creating an even more meaningful legacy.

Love you Mr Reeves , thank you for making me believe that a man could fly.

I know its probably just me but when I was a kid I just did not like Christopher Reeves Superman. I couldnt even watch the Superman Animated series because Superman was just to boy scout for me. But thats just something I've always wanted to get off my chest. But I've always said Olivia Wilde should have played Lois Lane

@HammerLegFoot - Same. I wouldn't want to have a conversation with him and don't feel he'd be able to relate. It's hard to put into words.

Henry's Kal-El is someone I would probably be comfortable talking with and I wouldn't have to hear this, "Golly, Gee, crime is bad." or something like that. Again, I'm not sure I'm making any sense.

I absolutely CAN NOT wait to see this.
First, what an amazing gesture and thing to do from WBs.
Secondly, Reeves IS my Superman and still the greatest of them all today.
Third, I hope his family is honored through this as well with everything they've done to help others.

Mostly, I look forward to what Richard Donnor will have to say after watching it.

So happy about this all the way around.

@lazlodaytona - Sadly, Donner passed during covid, so the film will have to serve as some small tribute to him as well as Reeves.

I'm looking forward to this too and, even though it wasn't produced by DC Studios, I think it's fitting that this will be their first official release.

The Dick Donner/Chris Reeves Superman single handedly created the modern superhero comic book movie adaptation.

@ObserverIO - agreed.

I feel so bad. I had no idea Donner passed.
A bit of tribute to him in the film would be highly appropriate thing to do. Would be cool to see some of his old interview clips.

As well, even though I was not a big fan of Smallville, I hope they include Welling talking about how much Reeve was such an encyclopedia about/on Superman...and what it was like to work with him.

Christopher Reeve IS Superman. Full stop.

The first two films with the practical effects and top shelf actors was the first time anyone took the CBM genre seriously.

Superman IS too Boy Scout.

That's the point.

Verisimilitude.

@Batmangina - No shade to those original movies. I love them. Reeve’s absolutely the embodiment of that Superman.

Having said that, let’s not let our love for nostalgia stop us from moving forward. I see it too often where someone’s love for what they saw in their childhood prevents them from enjoying or creating new things without having to acknowledge the old.

Moving forward doesn’t erase the past.

@Batmangina - Absolutely agree with everything you said and then some. this is coming from a guy who first saw Superman IV when I was 7. I made my parents rent the other 3 on VHS THAT night and I stayed up until 5a.m. to watch 'em.
Sorry, nostalgia hits the heart sometimes.

@philinterrupted - Very thought-provoking post and thank you for that.

Reeve will always be my favorite but that does not stop me from loving Tyler Hoechlin's Clark/Superman on "Superman and Lois" or Gerard Christopher's Superboy.

@lazlodaytona - I saw Superman The Movie when I was 10. I remember running out of the the theater with my best friend and my little brother and all we wanted to do was fly.
Batmangina
Batmangina - 4/10/2024, 4:10 PM
@philinterrupted - I wholeheartedly agree.

However, Hollywood jagoffs like Zack can't seem to keep from wasting 100s of millions of dollars on shitty, half assed 'reimaginings' where Pa Kent tells him to let kids die before and then kills himself in front of Clark only to have Ma Kent basically tell Clark to tell humanity to go [frick] itself.

Superman is the Boy Scout. Clark Kent is the REAL person because of the way he was raised.

Bruce Wayne is the Playboy Philanthropist. Batman is the REAL person because of what happened to his parents.

The MCU actually got it picture perfect with Steve Rogers - that's why all the white bread gee whiz humor worked so well.

Ironically, the Superman and Lois version has been the best version SINCE Reeve. Go figure.

The least they could do after the Flash garbage and its misuse of Reeves image. Also the timing of this is a bit self serving. Hopefully the film will provide all due respect to a great actor.

lazlodaytona - 4/10/2024, 9:38 AM
@Forthas - why is it self-serving? just curious.....
Forthas
Forthas - 4/10/2024, 11:27 AM
@lazlodaytona - because it coincides with the upcoming Superman film that was conveniently retitled Superman and that conveniently features the return of Ms Tessmacher and Otis last seen in Superman 2. Nice promotional material that will likely feature a teaser trailer for Superman in front of the Super Man documentary.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 4/16/2024, 4:45 AM
@Forthas - I hope there's a "special" teaser of it before the new Superman film.

I don't think there's any I'll will involved. It's just Superman's time now with Superman & Lois wrapping up its show this year the new Supes movie and a film dedicate towards Reeve.
Lots of good to come🦸

Everyone in this thread talking about how great Reeve was, BUT THEY CANT EVEN SPELL HIS NAME RIGHT.

People, look at the headline of this story: his name is REEVE.

Christopher. REEVE. NOT Reeves.

For all the platitudes about being “your superman” or how great he was to purposely spelling his name wrong.

Jesus Christ people.

@kg8817 - I was going to comment about this but I saw that you already had. The Reeves who played Superman was George, an icon in his own right.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 4/10/2024, 9:41 AM
@kg8817 - agreed. I think it gets confused with George "Reeves" and so on. Then, there was an actor, Gerard CHRISTOPHER, who played Superboy for 3 seasons.

It can get confusing. Just take a Xanax and drink a beer and you'll feel calmer :D

Too bad DC/WB cut off Donner from making Superman 3 & 4 those were awful in comparisons to the first two.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 4/10/2024, 9:54 AM
They actually cut Donner off over midway of part 2. They were filming back-to-back 1 & 2, but they fired Donner 3/4ths of the way through filming both and Richard Lester was hired to finish S2. He also went on to do 3 but it was a campy, critical failure. And Reeve was pretty much in charge of 4 which Cannon, who is now defunct, cut the budget by 2/3rds while filming was going on.

Superman II, despite the drama behind it, is my favorite Superhero movie ever; both the Lester and Donner cuts.
