FULL REVIEW (NON-SPOILERS)

Man of Steel is the Superman film we've all been waiting for. It reinvents Superman for a modern audience. It grounds the legend in reality. And, most importantly, Man of Steel makes us care about Superman again. When Zack Snyder was originally announced, I was worried. Snyder doesn't have the greatest track record of movies. Sucker Punch was terrible, and, while 300 and Watchmen were visually stunning, they lacked the depth of their source material. Snyder seemed strong on style but not on substance. Superman delivers, however, on story, character, depth and action. This is the first Superman movie where Superman actually kicks some major ass.

Past Superman films never made the most powerful man in the world feel as strong, fast, godlike as the character is. In this film you feel every punch, you zoom with him through the sky. In the 1970’s Superman the tagline was “You will believe a man can fly.” This new tagline should read: “You will believe a man can fly and punch someone into space!” I like the old Superman films, but there’s no denying how dated they have become (70's aesthetics, terrible special effects and extra cheese). Most people look at those with rose tinted glasses. They are certainly classics, and some of them are still wonderful to watch, but they are very much of their time.

This is a modern Superman for 2013, grounded in reality, made for a whole new generation of fans. Superman Returns (2006) tried to recreate the tone and style of the Donner films, but ultimately failed. Again, it’s the 21st century. What worked for audiences forty years ago does not work now. The noble Superman of the Donner films pulled his punches and wasn’t quite prepared the distance to insure the safety of Earth’s innocents. If you go into Man of Steel expecting Christopher Reeve’s Superman, you will be presented with a different beast entirely. Snyder has created a Superman that is capable of great violence in the service of his adopted home. While some viewers will pine for a simpler age, most people will be happy that Superman is relevant again. Not to say this film doesn't have heart it does, but it's definitely doesn't hold it's punches.

The action is larger than life, and the special effects are amazing. You will be treated to scenes that top even the famed New York action piece from The Avengers. The choreography is stunning, making for some of the best fight sequences in superhero history. Snyder has seriously raised the bar for superhero action in films. Marvel will have a hard time reclaiming the throne. Not just visually impacting, the action is adult and bone crunching. As Warner Bros. showed us with Nolan’s Batman trilogy, they are not Disney and do not pull their punches. The film is deep, somber and tackles adult themes. Though not as dark as The Dark Knight, the violence is real and people die. While the adult themes will be a turn-off for some, mature audiences will love that there is finally a Superman movie for them.

Man of Steel also re-energizes the superhero’s origin story. Superman’s infancy and arrival on earth is mostly told out of order, revealing a bit more at various times of Superman’s life. At first this style of storytelling is a little jarring, but once you get the hang of it the film clicks and flows beautifully. Some of Superman’s lore is changed or tweaked, but nothing that will get longtime fans in an uproar. The scene that introduces Superman to Lois is a little rushed and altered from the source material, but Snyder has a large cast and still manages to make everyone likeable and fleshed out as individual characters.

This is a different take on the Superman mythos, which deals with some very profound questions. What if Earth didn’t want Superman? How would we feel about an outsider, an alien of godlike powers coming to our planet? How would we treat him? How would our governments react? Again, the film feels grounded and Snyder delves into some dark and uncomfortable themes. Conventional comic book movies don’t make us think or question. Man of Steel demands that viewer participation.

Snyder’s impeccable visual sense is apparent throughout the film. It is shot much like the story—grounded in reality with shaky cam. You feel like you are a man on the street watching the action. There is so much attention to detail in this film that multiple viewings are necessary to catch everything. The alien world of Krypton is a real treat.

The cast did a superb job, Superman steals the show, but Zod is killer. Laurence Fishburne as Perry is great, Lois is spunky but doesn’t get a whole lot to do. Everyone is enjoyable, and the cast is well positioned for the inevitable sequels. There are hints of Lexcorp and a satellite has features a Waynetech logo (but if you’re expecting flamboyant Justice League Easter eggs, think again).

Man of Steel isn’t a perfect movie. It doesn’t break much ground or show us film or storytelling techniques that we haven’t seen before (but what recent film does?). The scene succeeds, however, in everything it tries for. Man of Steel raises the bar for action in superhero films and has finally made the titular Superman a relevant hero worth caring about.

(4.9/5)

Bonus Video: My off the cuff thoughts on the film. No spoilers till 5 min mark. I warn in the video at the 5 min mark so you will know when spoilers start, purist feel free to watch.

Why people always say zack isn't good on substance? Watchmen and 300 delivered as much substance as original material can offer! I fricking cried watching the end scene of 300 for gods' sake!

It's a 9.5 out of 10 in reality but our rating scale at DCN just is 1 through 5, so I did a 4 because it's not perfect. My reasons; it's not the deepest film, and it doesn't fully flesh out its characters. However it's damn good and a really fun action packed movie!

Well compared to IRON MAN 1, MOS has more hints at JL characters!

We just weren't expecting then; until Nick Fury showed up at the VERY VERY END!
Now fans are expecting Easter egg or reference!!

LexCorp sign for MOS-2!
& WAYNE Industries sign for JL is enough for a 1st film!

Most people (including me) had no idea watching Sam Jackson popup in IM-2, that why he's here & Who is he?
Cuz I saw IM after IM2!

Alot of Donnor hate for a movie made in the 70's! It's a film of it's time, not a bad film. Back then, Superman WAS a bit cheesy and played it safe. Different Superman of a different time, stop comparing the two.

You have to excuse some people here. Some people can't count your ratings. No matter how many pictures you use or how you translate those pictures into numbers on the side of the picture. Your review was a good read though. I, too, don't expect MoS to be perfect or have a perfect score but at least damn near it because there are always room for improvement in the sequel(s).

Batman Begins is my favorite CBM of all time (more so than TDK and Avengers) so saying it's as good, or better, than Begins bodes really well for this!

Donner's Superman set the benchmark for cbm's. Respect that at the very least. But time does pass and things can definitely be improved on. I'm so glad they seemed to have gotten this right. I hold this is the start of big things from WB/DC.

I just read the review on Empire. They gave it 4/5 so it's at least gonna be good (they're reviews are normally on the mark). I'm not expecting it to be as good as any film in The Dark Knight Trilogy as Empire gave each of those 3 films a solid 5/5, but 4/5 is good enough to warrant buying a cinema ticket for a Zack Snyder film. I may even say well done to the chap.

As a side note, Superman Returns didn't get 4/5, it got 5/5 ;-)

I'm sorry but why do people keep saying that Superman pulls his punches or isn't capable of violence. Yes Donners Superman pulled his punches but all the Difference versions of Superman in the Comic where Beating ass for a long long time. It's like everyone acts as if the comics never existed.

Look under the rating balloons/ planets, it says 4.9/5 stars. Please read and look carefully. Great review , no spoilers we haven't already heard. I can understand why some of the characters may not have been fleshed out, people are complex and Snyder wanted to concentrate on Superman's story. Plus I'm sure they wanted to keep the film at a reasonable viewing time. Just gives us more to look forward to in the sequels. Looking forwardto sseeing MOS on Thursday! Great review Matt.

Man of Steel is better than Iron man 3 the Only reason why Man of Steel has a low score ( its likely to get higher) is because lets see hmm Iron man 3 came off the Avengers so the critics decided hey lets over look the bad shit and there was alot it in Iron Man 3 and lets overly praise the film. Iron Man 3 got lucky because it came off the Avenegers John Campea was right this film will have a up hill battle but its expected Iron Man 3 was good but the Critics prasied this film even though Iron Man 3 has MORE PROBLEMS Then Man of Steel.

Man of Steel will get the high 80% i say Lower 80% IMO the audience though will love this film ALOT. Remeber Iron Man 3 got 78% but the audinece gave it a 84% lol

Man of Steel with the huge specticale it is and everyone saying it rivials the Avengers action it is more then likely going to have a very high Audince score Man of Steel is a great Film and people will love it. SO people stop panicinag when the movie isnt even released these are early reviews keep in mind the movie might actually be raised even higher on rotten tomattos

Most of the negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes seem to imply that its one big action sequence after another and there is no character development. Personally, i want a Superman movie where he kicks ass like he's meant to even if it means character development is somewhat put aside. Save that shit for the sequels.
