MAN OF STEEL Writer David S. Goyer Reveals A Baffling Script Note He Was Given By Warner Bros.

If you need more proof that Warner Bros. just doesn't get its DC Comics superheroes, look no further than Man of Steel writer David S. Goyer receiving a baffling script note from the studio...

Man of Steel was released back in 2013 to mostly positive reviews, though it certainly generated a lot of discussion online (primarily in regards to the high death count in the final act).

One part of the Zack Snyder-helmed movie that was well-received, however, were those scenes set on Krypton. The filmmaker devoted a lot of time to exploring the destruction of the planet, giving Jor-El more screentime than ever before and better explaining what led to Kal-El being sent to Earth.

David S. Goyer penned Man of Steel's screenplay, and in a lengthy chat with The Hollywood Reporter, he revealed a baffling script note given to him by Warner Bros.

"One note I got was on Man of Steel, where the ending involves Superman utilizing the pod that he arrived in as a child in order to bring down General Zod’s ship," Goyer said. "The note we got from the studio said, 'You have to change that.' We asked why. They said, 'Because if Superman uses that pod and it’s destroyed while saving the city, how is he ever going to get back home to Krypton?' There was just this long pause and we said, 'Krypton blew up. You saw 30 minutes of it!'"

Yes, the studio had such a lack of understanding about Superman that they actually thought he needed a ship to travel back to Krypton with. Putting aside the fact that his planet being destroyed is a pivotal part of the comic books, these executives actually saw it blow up in Man of Steel, and still didn't get it.

So, yeah, it's fair to say the DCEU might not be in the safest of hands. There is a new regime at Warner Bros. now, of course, and we're keeping everything crossed The Suicide Squad doesn't disappoint (it's probably pretty safe with the director of two great Marvel Studios movies at the helm).

@Mrtoke - He has the credentials to be that sole voice to keep everything together. And yes aside from that idiotic decision to have Batgirl bang Batman, he has always shown a love, respect, and understanding of the DC Universe.

@528491 - the studio didn't know, so there was no way of them knowing they had someone on their hands who also didn't. Still no excuse, still blame them

@Odin - Absolutely. They were all "OMG what is going on, why is Superman a dick?" and then inside "it's a dream sequence on two panels."

Anyone seen the Brave and the Bold episode where Superman is exposed to Red Kryptonite and making him evil (referencing the comics' unpredictability but using it like Smallville did) and goes around committing crimes based on old Silver Age comics, culminating in Superman in the Pope hat against TDKR armor Batman? Good times, good times...

@Reeds2Much -
The dickery of Superman was off the charts in the Silver Age.
This is what happens when writers are bored.
