The great thing about the character is when a writer can capture the true essence of The Man of Steel, it can make for some great stories.
Among the list of legendary writers who have been able to perform such a task are Alan Moore, John Bryne, Geoff Johns, Mark Millar, Grant Morrison and--my personal favorite--Mark Waid. Noted for his fantastic work on the critically acclaimed audience favorite Kingdom Come, Mark Waid was able to capture the true essence of Superman as he was able to portray the humanity of the alien from another galaxy in a way few others have. But the dynamic Daredevil writer didn't stop with a conclusion tale, he took to write the best origin tale of the Man of Steel with his run on the 12 book epic Superman: Birthright that took a modernized look to the ageless classic of Superman. Though he had a falling out with Detective Comics, Mark still loves the character of Superman very much and shares his thoughts on the hero's return to the big screen as well as his last appearance while talking to fans at Emerald City Comicon:
He, like myself and many other Superman/DC fans, while disappointed in “Superman Returns,” nonetheless enjoyed it purely from a fan perspective since we were all still seeing Superman live-action, in costume, flying around, with all those familiar characters. Mark went onto say he’s likes what he’s seen so far from “Man of Steel.” He added that the controversial scene in the trailer where Kevin Costner’s Jonathan Kent telling a Young Clark Kent that maybe he should have let the kids on the bus die. He agreed with my opinion that the scene wasn’t mean to be all doom-and-gloom, but reflect Jonathan’s desire to simply protect his only son, who he loves and would do anything for.
The legendary writer also elaborates on the event that caused him to leave DC for rival Marvel comics and hints at the likely hood of his return to the publishing company again:
He also echoed what he’s said in the past that while only Dan Didio knows why the changes were made to the end “52″ all those years ago, Mark would still love to reunite with Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka, Grant Morrison and Keith Giffen on another project.
Here's hoping DC can sway Mark Waid to someday write another Superman book in the New 52!
