Scott Snyder Shares His Thoughts On The MAN OF STEEL Trailer And This Year's CBM's

In a recent interview with IGN Comics, Scott Snyder (who will next year team up with artist Jim Lee (Justice League) on a new Superman comic book series entitled Man of Steel) has shared his thoughts on the Man of Steel trailer which blew us all away when it was released last week. As you can see from his comments below, he enjoyed The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises just as much as the rest of us, but his take on Superman will be far more similar to both the latter movie AND Zack Snyder's upcoming grounded take on the iconic DC character. Be sure to click on the link at the bottom of the page to read the interview in full and sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

"I’m really excited for it. It’s hard because it’s just what I was hoping in that it doesn’t reveal too much at all, so I watch it and it just makes me eager to see it. I definitely was excited when you saw him about to fly and you saw his fist down and the ice started to shake and you got the sense that he really existed in the real world. You know what I mean? You can see something happening and it almost looks like a real-time molecular reaction there. It’s so interesting; it’s really what it’d look like and I never thought about that. I love Superman in the real world in a big way."

"As much as I adore movies and stories that take place clearly in a world that’s more comic booky-y – I loved The Avengers (don’t kill me, DC) and Spider-Man – but at the same time I really loved the Dark Knight movies because they are so grounded in a realistic world. That definitely works for Batman, but I also think that’s a really interesting way to approach Superman and I will say that our Superman is deeply rooted in that idea. It’s not going to be the book where you see Superman fighting a lot of supervillains and a lot of crazy colorful space aliens and stuff like that."

What the hell is "realistic" when it comes to CBM's? Someone give me an intelligent explanation.

There is like 3 or 4 people with Grif's avatar. I even saw one the other day with the name Grif.

WILL THE REAL GRIF PLEASE STAND UP?

Grif is sitting alone in the dark in his big house, brooding and waiting for the day CBM needs him again, the day the Grif-signal will shine through his window, the day Grifman Returns...to fight Danny DeVito...wait, what?

@vadakin, in my imagination, a big fuzzy, disgruntled looking teddy bear was sitting in a dark room with the window behind him when suddenly a big bear symbol is shining in the clouds... cue danny elfman music...

This isn't going to be Superman Returns guys, he's fighting Zod, Faora, the military, and some other alien creatures from the Phantom Zone.

Superman vs Zod huh? So it goes one of 2 ways, either its Smith vs Neo again, or its giant selephane 'S's and powers we never see or hear of again. Colour me unexcited.

For the love of all that is Comic Books, will someone please do a live action Doomsday.

I'm excited for this movie but the phrase "It’s not going to be the book where you see Superman fighting a lot of supervillains and a lot of crazy colorful space aliens and stuff like that"... It doesn't make me happy at all.

Forget realism..... Jeese before special tx caught up they were realistic kinda as in no amazing feats or abilities. If you want realism get away fromthe comic genre and watch Dr. Phil. this is COMICBOOKmovie.com. iwant over the top action, mind blowing fight scenes and cheesy lines that no one would question due to the fact your such a badass. I love movies but above all else I love comic books and the ESCAPE from reality. I'm not a nolanite, marvelmaniac but yes I am a fanboy and if you're not then you have no business on this site. so ignuRant, choke on a bag of Johnson's. as for superman I'm tired of luthor and zod. gimme doomsday, parasite, metallo, braniac, gross, grundy, blockbuster, vandal savage, someone new who poses an extreme physical threat. I'm also concerned that we didn't see heat vision or x-ray vision.

@IgnurRant Wow...you truly are "ignorant".smdh That's a shame

I enjoyed all 3 CBMS this summer. TASM was my least favorite out the 3 but it was still good.

Next year though....we got IM3, MOS(which I'm getting kinda excited about),and Thor:TDW. I'm still on the fence on The Wolverine....until I see a trailer.

This gives me a lot of hope for Man of Steel comic book series. I'm so tired of ridiculous storylines like multiple-dimensions impacting each other, and time travel, and yadda yadda yadda.

Yes i recognize the inherent ridiculousness of almost all comic book heroes especially Supes, but at the same time I want to really imagine how a being like that would fit into our actual real world.

The types of comic book stories I want to read are not just "villain-of-the-week" stories but how Clark deals with his power, how the world views Superman. If Superman actually existed this would have huge rippling effects on diplomacy, military excursions, politics, and probably even the economy.

What does Superman do when confronted with a massacre happening on one end of the world and another happening at the same time? How does he deal with this moral dilemma? How does he hope to have a relationship when he feels a responsibility to human kind. How does the world react when Superman isn't able to stop something horrible from happening? How does he deal with huge failure on such a public stage?

How does the military treat him? If he refuses to be an arm of the US military, is he viewed as a threat? Are there warrants for his arrest? What sort of public relations issues would exist for politicians who embrace or reject Superman? Would there be a backlash by the public on the fact that Superman's primary interventions are on relatively minor crimes happening in a 1st world city like Metropolis and not on violence in places like Syria?

How would he approach civil wars in other countries? Does he sit idly by and watch the carnage? Does he simply try to assist the innocent civilians? How does he determine who's a civilian and who isn't? What does he do with refugees?

There are so many incredibly interesting angles and questions with which to approach Superman that I don't think have been adequately explored in any medium, especially the comics.

I essentially want an "adult" take on the character and I think that would lend itself more to a huge graphic novel (that's not just a collection of previous comics) possibly and not a monthly series. But given the constraints of a monthly title I think they could still explore some of these issues. And I hope they do.

Eventually I think it would be fine to introduce villains like Darkseid but only way down the road after dealing with truly worldly questions of Superman.

At knight of steel

I know, there's a panel in final crisis after Batman toasted with omega beams that superman plows into the city and slowly walks up to darkseid eyes glowing huge looking all pissed and jacked. truly an iconic comicbook moment for me.

Good, because most of the Superman stories so far have been subpar. I like that it won't be him fighting space aliens and monsters all the time. That gets very old and generic. Oh look, Superman's fighting another monster from space, AGAIN. Gets old. Looking forward to Snyder and Lee's approach.
