EDITORIAL: Smallville, An Elseworlds Tale

I originally started this as a comment, but it evolved into a full thought process about the series.

Ugh. Ok, as someone fairly new to the site, I feel obligated to at least one smallville sucks comment. While I don't think the concept sucks (that being life before the suit), beyond season 4 they ought to have slapped a big elseworlds sticker on it. That's when they started introducing characters into continuity that he shouldn't have met yet. After that, it became a matter of holding up a falling house, and everything we knew about the mythos was tossed.

Now, in an effort to keep viewership, they keep dangling the suit carrot. The problem with that is now your viewers are waiting weekly for a payoff that may not even come, not to mention the fact that he'll probably have the suit before he can fly, because they are still slaving to the "no flights, no tights" policy they came up with a decade ago. They tried to stretch a four year plan for ten years, and it shows.

Oh, and Chloe is a waist of airtime. All she does is give us the obligatory one-liner that all shows after 7pm have to have nowadays, and say the product placement line of the week. Every episode designed to make her feel important to the cast fall flat and detract from the main story. Half of the episodes about her don't have the main villain in it.

Again, I enjoy the show. Enjoyed the show. I just feel as though it's a surrealist view of the mythos. And every week, I sit in front of my tv, hoping they'd fix it. They don't. And each week I'm dissatisfied, but (like so many of us here) I've invested so much time in the series, I'm committed because I'm owed a payoff. At some point the series has to end. At some point they have to deliver.
