Green Arrow - The reason for Smallville's Season 9 and Season 10 poor storylines?

I'm not one to write a long article so I'll keep it brief and to the point.

Green Arrow was originally a great character that contributed heavily to the plot and fun of Seasons 6-8. His character worked where it was needed and was great to the action of the Justice League, etc. It wasn't until Season 9, however, that his "usefulness" to the story and overall plot of Smallville began to hurt the show. Since the writers have made him into a full member of the cast rather than a guest, he has caused numerous episodes to drop in reviews, ratings, etc. His demeanor has gone from a great hero who contributed to the overall team to now of a love crazed lunatic that needs to be pulled from the show.

In Season 9, he served little purpose outside of the few episodes with Hawkman and the team members that showed small pieces of action and plot. Outside of that, he merely whined constantly about his affections for Chloe and his inability "find himself".

Now in Season 10, he continues to drag down the show with more of his lousy romantic scenes with Chloe (another character that has dragged down the shows plot recently), his hiding constantly away from his Green Arrow role and the now loss of the good side of his personality.

My question to you all is this, do you agree that his character has been a heavy contribution to the downfall of what is supposed to be the final season of Smallville? Should the show's producers NOT have switched him to a main character back during Season 8-9? Do you believe the producers should remove him from the remainder of the season - with exception to a brief scene at the finale?

I am a major fan of Smallville and have supported and watched the show since the beginning. I own every episode and watch it constantly. But I for one am tired of seeing the now poorly developed character of the FORMERLY KNOWN Green Arrow....

I kind of agree. I preferred when he was just a guest appearance- made it more exciting when he showed up.

No i agree there has been some episodes that are about him and he began as a [frick]ing guest so he should never of got any of his own episodes at all, should of stayed a guest, and should of killed chloe not jimmy in season 8 finale

Good article. Every word conveyed.

I think 6-8 was fun but then they implemented him more as Batman inside the tired freak of the week formula and it was a bore. Not useless or contributing to the script, but just kinda 'meh'.

@Hellebus I definitely agree with you when you say that the Chloe and Oliver romance is hurting the show, but I think LEEE777 hit the nail on the head when he said that the writers are the ones basically ruining this season.

@LEEE777 I couldn't agree more dude.

The only thing I'm actually looking forward to now is the return of the real Lex Luthor.

I agree with what was said about Oliver, but I don't think we can blame it on the character. It's the freaking writers that mess up the characters. They don't always write in Oliver well, but they don't always write in Lois or Clark well either. Lois dates a super hero and is a journalist. There's no reason why she should have sucky stories. There's crime happening everywhere around the world. Why would we need pointless fillers about nothing when Clark could be saving some who needs saving at any time of the day? What's the point of Oliver moping about Chloe leaving and then bringing her back and hooking them back up or arguing about the term "boyfriend" in one episode and marrying the two of them in the next?

The writers are inconsistent hacks. It's as simple as that.

But I do really dislike Oliver for the past two seasons especially, as well as Chloe.

All in all- Justin Hartley is doing a BANG UP job in his role on Smallville. I mean at least the dude is a pretty damned good/convincing actor from what I've and I'm sure everyone else here has seen. Def it's the writers fault. But yeah he definitely worked better as a guest-appearance because it went from being exciting when he'd show up...to now just being...bland. He's kind of become like Tess. Tess was cool in the beginning when she first appeared. Now she is just so [frick]ING annoying I want her to die as much as i'd like to see Chloe die. Damn Smallville is the first show where it's actually got me rooting for characters to die, that is sad. LOL

@BigChief16- Agreed dude!! THE REAL LEX LUTHOR!!!! =D

I couldn't agree more that Seasons 9 had poor storylines. And Season 10 is worse! The last 3 episodes have been unwatchable. (It was bad enough to try to make us believe Chloe & Oliver together. But Justin Hartley in drag is an insult. A real low point that shows just how far off the rails the show has gone!) For awhile the show was getting edgier and more adult, now it's morphed into a chick-flick/Sunday school mentality. Even the villains seems like code for religious themes this season!

It's like they're just amusing themselves now & ignoring the character arcs or any attempt at drama. Plus, it's breathtakingly amateurish to spend so many episodes nostalgically stroking each other. Bring back former characters--great idea!--but not just so you can dress up in drag & goof around & tell each other how great you are. It's not just boring, it's actually embarrassing. Guess we'll have to take Season 10 out of the boxed gift set! Sad way to end a great show.

if chloe was killed he would have been married to black canary by now...if green arrow had his own series...itd be like the dark knight on TV...no superpowers...just all realistic...hmmmm?

green arrow is a good character on smallville but the writers make him do alot of uncharacteristic things. But i still think bruce wayne would of made a better character in smallville. But anyone else notice the green arrow has nailed just about every chick on the show. lol

I completely agree! There are only a handful of episodes left and the fans want to see how the Superman story unfolds not the crappy emotional struggles of Oliver Queen.

They should kill him.

I think he will die soon and play a part in the final chapter of Clark's mental "puberty"

@steelrocks thats definately the perfect way for the new superboy luthor bastard child whatever he is to establish his evil side.. blow up watchtower... taking care of tess, oliver, chloe... not Emil.. he was getting coffee or something... so he can sing some more elvis at the funeral

I totally disagree with the very premise of the article. Season 9 was by far the best season. Season 7 was by far the worst. Season 9 just escalated everything perfectly and kept the story going. And Oliver's story was fantastic starting with the depressive episode and ending with him confessing his love for Chloe. Season10 hasn't been as good as Season 9, but it's not even close to a bad season.
