SUPERMAN Extended Clip Spotlighting An Injured Man Of Steel Debuts During CinemaCon

A new teaser for James Gunn's Superman in the form of an extended clip debuted during Warner Bros.' CinemaCon panel tonight, and we have a full breakdown right here...

Warner Bros.' CinemaCon panel just finished up, and while we didn't get the major announcements or a new trailer for Superman fans had been hoping for, an extended clip (reportedly the same that will screen with A Minecraft Movie) from James Gunn's DCU reboot did screen for those in attendance.

The sequence begins with a badly injured Man of Steel (David Corenswet) crashing into the snow, before Krypto arrives and drags him to the Fortress of Solitude.

This CinemaCon exclusive won't be released online, but you can check out a detailed description (via Discussing Film) below.

"The footage starts similarly to the first trailer, with Superman crashing into the arctic, injured and whistling to summon Krypto, who arrives in a big snowy flurry. Krypto playfully jumps on Superman as he grunts in pain. “Take me home” he commands, holding out his cape. Krypto comedically drags Superman around the tundra as a crystal structure grows in the distance and creates two doors that glow with Superman’s logo — it’s the fortress of solitude.

Automatons greet Superman and pick him up to place him in a healing chamber powered by the sun. He tries to thank the automatons but they stress they do not have sentience. The clip transitions into the main Superman trailer, but ends with Superman leaving the fortress of solitude, almost leaving Krypto behind before his pet whimpers. He allows Krypto to tag along as he playfully charges and bites at Superman’s shoes as the clip ends."

By all accounts, the clip was well-received, and Krypto's antics got quite a few laughs.

During the presentation, Gunn also revealed that he was originally offered Superman back in 2018, but decided to make The Suicide Squad instead.

“Back in 2018 I was first offered Superman and I was like ‘oh my god, that seems so cool … it seems hard. And they said we also wanted you to do the Suicide Squad, and I took the easy way. It was an R-rated movie about a bunch of ragtag heroes.”

“But it stuck with me and it was a constant thought experiment in my mind. How can you take a character like that, perceived as old fashioned by many, so many permutations throughout the years… how can you do it for a modern audience? And one day it suddenly hit me in a burst, and I wanted to do a story that was utterly human, utterly fantastic” the director went on.

“This is a movie that celebrates kindness and human love,” added Gunn, “I want people to have that magical feeling when they come out of the movie and they love the person they came with a little more than when they went in.”

Superman also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabel Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

Sara Sampaio is on board as Lex's assistant/lover Eve Teschmacher, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell will play "Ma" and "Pa" Kent, and Milly Alcock's Supergirl has been confirmed to make her debut ahead of her own Woman of Tomorrow movie.

"And that’s a wrap," Gunn posted earlier this year when filming concluded. "God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life. I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. And the goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on a daily basis on the set has inspired me and thrust me forward when I felt too spent to move on my own.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor. The destination has been Superman, but the journey has been the toil and the laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we’ve shared together on set - and for that I am forever grateful."

You can check out an updated synopsis for the movie below.

"In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind."

Awesome I can't wait to see this....

I hope someone leaks this

@Scarilian - Other than Lois knowing Clark is Superman, I like all of that.

I hope someone leaks the footage...

@Pictilli - Lois knowing Clark is Superman is best for business. How many stories where Lois is oblivious to his secret identity is beyond me but it’s silly. The one person who’s closest to him (other than the Kent’s) spends the most time with him but doesn’t know he’s superman. Especially after how many years she’s known him? Nah it’s better storytelling when she’s in on the secret, adds more authenticity to their relationship.

@CaptainAwkward - I disagree, it is a modern trope in all superhero stories to do away with the secret identity because writers are too lazy and uncreative to tell stories with a secret identity anymore.

Gunn mentioned pocket universe so the plot leak is confirmed. Not sure how I feel about Jor El sending him to earth to conquer it like a Viltrimite. That's Smallville.

@McMurdo - i dont think Gunn will let it be like that (jorel sending to conquer). Im thinking there will be a twist
Pictilli
Pictilli - 4/1/2025, 10:10 PM
@McMurdo - it puts to rest the whole sent to earth to be a predestined space Jesus thing finally and emphasizes that he is good because he is Clark Kent/because of the Kents, so I am fine with it.

@Pictilli - im good with this as well

@McMurdo -
I find the whole plot to be a disaster. It really feels like a destruction of a majority of the characters.
CaptainAwkward

@McMurdo - Just out of curiosity if this film doesn’t meet your expectations for whatever reason or you have issues with it, are you going to cry about it?
Scarilian
Scarilian - 4/1/2025, 10:34 PM
@Pictilli -
He doesn't know why he was sent to Earth, he learns it at the same time that Lex encrypts the message. So his choice was his own without anyone's influence.

It's ripped from Flashpoint Beyond #3 and likely would be the set-up for a Kryptonian invasion to be the threat for their versions of an Avengers movie - whether this be them bringing in Zod or potentially a handful of other Kryptonians.
Pictilli
Pictilli - 4/1/2025, 10:37 PM
@Scarilian - yeah, I just hope he creates the S symbol in it. Although I doubt it...

Also, hope there are not multiple survivors of Krypton. Hopefully Zod will be from another dimensiom instead of surviving Krypton.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 4/1/2025, 10:40 PM
@Pictilli - that makes sense and is actually a really great way to put it. If it's utilized in the film in that way it'll be dope then. I guess it's just so against the comics lore that it's hard to think about it any other way
McMurdo
McMurdo - 4/1/2025, 10:40 PM
@Scarilian - that's a huge stretch my guy. Break that down for me
Pictilli
Pictilli - 4/1/2025, 10:44 PM
@McMurdo - Krypton is just the excuse for the powers in the comics, especially the Siegel & Shuster version. The goodness/morality comes from the Kents, as does the desire to create the costumed persona and help people. All Jor El has to do is save baby Kal El... he doesn't have to be evil but he doesn't have to be a holy benevolent all-father type concerned with the eternal well being of earth while his planet explodes you know?
Repian
Repian - 4/1/2025, 11:40 PM
@McMurdo - The Fortress of Solitude's configuration and holographic messages are corrupted.

When the attempt to manipulate Superman fails, the fortress's robots secretly work to create the Eradicator.

@JurassicClunge - that's not true. Guardians 1 I was superbly hyped for and I came down hard on it here. I backed Nicole Perlman in these comment sections because she came up with the cassette tape memento and the line up, Xander etc. I've softened on Guardians 1 over time but nonetheless

@vectorsigma - I finally saw Ne Zha 1.
Loved it.

There's a lot of broad strokes Hollywood influence, but strangely enough I thought it had more in common with Hellboy than anything else. I wonder if Hellboy's big in China. Both Ne Zha 1 and Hellboy 1 even end with a similar voice over.

I really like it. I 'm gonna look for the spin-off movie next before seeing if Ne Zha 2 is still showing anywhere.

vectorsigma - 4/2/2025, 6:16 AM
@ObserverIO - nice!

Ne Zha 1 has also that Dreamworks feel. I have not seen the similarities with Hellboy but please do share. Are you referring to the demon-child setup?

If you happen to see Naruto. I think that has a lot of influece too, even the shot of the swing while he is alone.

But anyway, nice to hear you liked it. Part 2 became really crazy and i wasnt expecting it to be like that so my first watch was truly epic.

Also, Jiang Ziya is more on the adult side and is a spiritual journey of the character more than anything else so it is a bit slow and moody. I can say you can skip it and just get back to it, still a good watch.

Hope you can still find Ne zha 2 on theaters near you
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 4/2/2025, 7:17 AM
@vectorsigma - Yeah just that Hellboy is supposed to be a demon that brings about the end of the world but because of the way he was raised and his father he's just a regular guy and chooses to be the good guy.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 4/2/2025, 8:03 AM
@ObserverIO - got it. And id say the english dub was really great in part 1 as well. Might take a while though for part 2.

I heard they also showed a BTS at the panel.

Krypto sounds like an overachiever and over excited dog, it checks with what Gunn said that it makes him a "terrible dog" I guess. Wants to help so much that it can maybe cause a scene.

A proper trailer might be saved for next month since I doubt the extended preview being saved for Minecraft this Friday is the full-fledge trailer everyone wants to see. Likely this clip of sorts is what will be shown on theaters this weekend.

Also wonder if they will show something for Supermdan Day,June 12.

@NinnesMBC - think you are right about Krypto…

He seems overeager which could spell disaster so we’ll see.

I’m surprised we didn’t get anymore DC news but oh well , we still got Comic Con
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 4/2/2025, 12:15 AM
@TheVisionary25 - Thanks, it's what you end up with when you start to put together the description of the footage shown: jumps on Superman when it sees him, licks him, starts running around him despite looking like a mess, it checks out with any pet that misses it's master/parent/friend and wants to hang out with them the moment they arrive regardless if they even can. They have needs and can make a mess, but not intentionally.

So yeah, overager is definitely the right word here.

Would be nice for them to really show up this time and share stuff from Supergirl and Lanterns. As well as thank the fans that have been going to see Superman so far by then, the film will be out around then.

Everything I've seen from this flick so far has been underwhelming.
I liked Gunn's work on Guardians, but I think he's the wrong guy for Superman, and totally not the right guy to helm your entire connected universe.

Honestly Gunn’s comments excite me more since it being a human story and about kindness & love sound exactly like what Superman should be imo.
