For quite some time now, the DC Comics fandom has assumed that Viola Davis was set to appear in Superman: Legacy as Amanda "the Wall" Waller.
Davis previously played the character in the DCEU, appearing in both Suicide Squad films, the Peacemaker television show and the Rock's Black Adam film.
Davis is one of the few DCEU actors who will be allowed to continue playing their character in the DCU, along with John Cena's Peacemaker, Freddie Stroma's Vigillante, Jennifer Holland's Emilia Harcourt and Xolo Maridueña's Blue Beetle.
Given Amanda Waller's traditional role as a United States government liaison tasked with monitoring and keeping in check, the country's metahuman population, many DC fans thought Waller would be appearing in Superman: Legacy. But it seems that's not the case, according to Legacy director and DC Studios co-chair James Gunn.
Taking to Threads, Gunn confirmed the news.
Now while Amanda Waller will not be appearing in Superman: Legacy, she will be the titular character headlining an HBO/Max television series.
Revealed during the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters DCU slate announcement back in January 2023, Gunn described the Waller TV series as, "this is the story of Amanda Waller, played by Viola Davis. She is going to team-up with members of Team Peacemaker and this is a story that's been created by Crystal Henry, who created Watchmen, and Jeremy Carver, who created the Doom Patrol. It is a fantastic story, that's out of this world and I can't wait for people to see it."
It's also likely that the character will be featured in season 2 of Peacemaker, which seems to be starting production fairly soon.
While Viola Davis may not be appearing, the James Gunn-directed (and written) Superman: Legacy, film will feature David Corenswet as Kal-El/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/The Engineer and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.
Additionally, Nicholas Hoult has been confirmed by Gunn to portray Lex Luthor in the film.
Currently set for release on July 11, 2025, Superman: Legacy is the first film in Gunn's reboot the DCEU. Filming was originally expected to begin this January but has now been confirmed to start in March.
Stay tuned for future DCU updates as there should be some major announcements revealed in the coming weeks as Hollywood emerges from its Christmas hibernation.
