When SUPERMAN (formerly known as Superman: Legacy) started shooting at the end of last month, filmmaker James Gunn took to social media to share a sneak peek at the Man of Tomorrow's chest logo.
Since then, we've got a first glimpse at Maria Gabriela De Faria as The Engineer, though the set photos have divided fans. Taken out of context and compared to the character's comic book counterpart, it's fair to say The Authority member doesn't look very good!
Should David Corenswet also be spotted on set suited up as Superman, the response could be similarly divisive. DC Studios has the chance to preempt that by dropping an official photo but, for now, that doesn't appear to be on the cards.
Reaching out to Gunn on Threads, one fan described the wait to see the full Superman costume as "torture." They asked the filmmaker why he's not showing off the new Man of Steel's look to which he responded, "Because the movie doesn't come out for over a year."
It's a fair point!
Gunn, who is also DC Studios' co-CEO, recently confirmed he'll be missing July's San Diego Comic-Con and it doesn't appear the studio currently has any plans to share an updated slate with fans (news of a Teen Titans movie hit the trades on Friday).
"[SUPERMAN] is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe," Gunn said last year when the DCU slate was revealed. "Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world."
"I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”
SUPERMAN tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
David Corenswet is playing the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan has been tapped to star as Lois Lane. Other recent casting additions include Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.
SUPERMAN is currently set to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
