Superman Returns... to court! And it looks like Warners is going to NEED to make a Superman film by 2012 to keep the rights.

Got this lil bit of info from Empire...its a bit long winded but interesting

Warner Bros., DC Comics and Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel (technically, his estate) have been locked in a custody battle for Superman for some time now, and the latest stage in the case has gone Warner Bros.' way - but the continuing suit could force Warners to put a Superman film in development by 2011 in order to hold onto the rights.

This is a bit dry, but stick with us. The contention of Siegel's heirs was that DC Comics made a "sweetheart deal" with Warners, giving the latter the rights to film Superman Returns at a fraction of their market value. If proved, this would have allowed the Siegel estate to share in the movie profits as well as income from the comics.

U.S. Judge District Court Judge Stephen G. Larson rejected that argument on Wednesday. The Siegels' attorney, Marc Toberoff, however, claimed that the judgment also noted that it was "inequitable" that there was no reversion clause in the Warners/DC agreement, which would allow the Superman film rights to revert back to DC (and the Siegels) if Warners did nothing with them for a certain length of time.

The Court ruled that if Warners did not put a Superman film in development by 2011, the Siegels could sue to recover damages as a result of the non-reversion. Given that part of the copyright in any case reverts back to the Siegel estate and that of co-creator Joe Shuster in 2013 anyway, there is now a definite timetable within which Warners will need to get a film moving if they're to make another Man of Steel film.

Warner Brothers's Alen Horn was quoted "our hope is to develop a Superman property that keeps the character alive and reinvent to try again"...so i guess no Routh!

So i would expect in the next 18 months or so you will probably hear word of a new Superman film in production.

I find these hard to believe they sold Superman to DC which mean they have no rights to the character

indeed he is. a reboot is definitely needed for Superman after Singers sad attempt at nostalgia with Returns. every Mark Millar comic book Ive ever read has been amazing so its him that they should get to sort the franchise out as i saw rumoured somehwere a while ago.

Goddamn! Does anyone remember how well Singer did with X-2???? That was and still is the movie to beat in my eyes. A far better film then that dark knight shit. X-2 was also far ahead of X-1, so who's to say Singer couldn't pull it off again with a sequel to Returns. I think it's funny how people of all brains and stupidity write these blogs here, but do any of you write to say Warner Bros? I know I have. Many of you people remind me how us Americans are. They bitch and complain how f**ked up the country is,and never went out to vote. I guess some people leave it to god or fate, or the will of the force. We do have a voice, and the mouth could be a weapon of mass destruction in every way possible. You find the time to blog here, then take an extra 5 mins look up the studios and voice yourself. At the very least you could say you took a shot, and maybe one these studio types will see and hear. I'm sure with enough calls or blogs it can make a difference.

ASSASSIN666: yes, im sure that a multi billion dollar company like The WB will listen to my idea for a Superman Reboot. Ive never told anyone this before but it was me who actually wrote the script for Iron Man. Do you really think that they would even readanything that we sent them? what Fox did with Deadpool in Wolverine shows that they obviously dont care whether the fans will be happy with how accurate the characters are portrayed! and how the hell can you say that X-2 was better than The Dark Knight!?! all singer did with the X-Men films was to try and make a point about racism and probably homophobia (because he is gay) which was portrayed as people hating mutants for being 'different' rather than making a decent superhero film. then with Returns all he did was another film about being an 'outsider' - the guy obviously has issues and shouldnt be allowed anywhere near another superhero film! Brett Ratner is not a good director but at least X-3 felt like a film about superheroes - Magneto actually tore about the Golden Gate Bridge! the closest the first two got to action on that scale was...well nothing!

Joss Whedon would be a great choice to take over the X-Men franchise especially after his brilliant run on Astonishing! and this time, they should have the costumes instead of those idiotic identical leather outfits.

Teabag, sorry they gave you a voucher to such a bullshit movie. I should have stated that dealing with the studios is like shoveling shit against the tide. We will lose many battles and maybe the war too, but we're defenders of the faith here. If we go down then let's take some of hollywood with us by not seeing a nonsense, generic, horse shit movie. Remember we are the ones with the money here, if we don't see it, they don't make it. I like the idea of forcing them to rethink how and who they are making movies for. I know that nobody would buy a piece of shit to eat for dinner, so why would we watch a piece of shit to entertain ourselves?

What don't first have Doomsday and down the road have "The Reign of The Supermen" storyline? That was one of the best comic book storylines I have ever read, I remember being an eleven year old kid waiting every Wednesday for the next Superman comic in 93, those where the days you saw comic book stores everywhere, but now they are almost extinct, kind of like local video stores, a lot of them went belly up when Blockbuster video came along in the early 1990's.

Ok with the hostility, spiderman 2 was awesome and so too was iron man. Dark knight was a film that should be seen by psychology students. Like I've said before dark knight did what it did because of Ledgers death. Let's call it the Michael Jackson of superhero movies. The whole world jumped on that movies dick. Batman begins was a much better movie and that too had many psychology points. Do any of you realize that because of the hype machine and an overdose the third movie could end up like an x-3 or spiderman 3? Many people slammed the first hulk which was very much like dark knight why? Nobody complained that dark knight was too long, but hulk got slammed over it. Nobody complained that there wasn't enough action in dark knight, but hulk got slammed for it. Some of you guys need to make up your minds.

Personally, I support the Siegel and Shuster estates here. Anything that puts more money in their pockets after the way those guys were screwed is cool by me.

That said, it is amazing that one superhero franchise can produce two of the best comic films ever (Supetmsn I and II- the Donner Cut- with Reeves) and three of the worst (III, IV, and Returns). Point is that this franchise can produce great films with the right people involved. Since Warners will most certainly put SOMETHING in production in time to avoid losing the rights to the franchise, let's hope that we can finally get another film to add to the great side. A key to that would be the right villain, namely Brainiac or Darkseid. Either would provide us with an interesting foe worthy of Superman.

Thanks to Teabag for posting this.

TOUCHE, teabag... TOOOUCHEEE (long eees there at the end?, btw?) "I'm Ron Burgundeeee???"

Since no one else is going to read my or "TheUnknown's" article(s)... This is all I had to say at the end of mine... which I think will make an excellent addition to your comments section, btw, "very muuuch."

This is good news because we've almost certainly got a start date, at the latest, for production on a new Superman flick. However, if they're not ready to go into production, and rush a script, we could be looking at something way worse than Superman Returns.

Huh? HuuuuH? What do you guys think?! Ground breaking commentary??? hahahahaaaaa!!!! OoOohhh meeee...
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 7/9/2009, 7:16 AM
Josh the whole point of the X Men and reason for the mutants creation WAS to make a point on racism and homophobia, basically intolerance of any kind. Singer was actually truer to the original comics than many other directors would have been. So Wolverine wasn't wearing yellow spandex..big deal! Are you saying that if a movie has super heroes doing lots of supertheroey things but has the depth of a puddle, that its a better movie than one with slightly less action but with a bit of substance?

Shaman - 7/9/2009, 7:19 AM
ASSASSIN666- I feel you Che, i really do but your delusions of grandeur are pathetic!!! THEY DON'T GIVE A FLYING [frick] ABOUT US!!!!! Get it through your [frick]ing head ONCE AND FOR [frick]ING ALL!!!!! Movie goers aren't fans of comic books, they're MOVIE fans!!!! They love a good superhero movie filled with explosions, tight colorful suits and ACTION!!! They could care less who Wolverine's true love is or what was Deadpool's origins or if Superman is supposed to get a son or not!!! THEY'LL PAY THROUGH THE NOSE TO GET ENTERTAINED IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM!!! Do you know how small of a percentage we fans are to their revenu??? EVERY single fan could die in an earthquake and they'd laugh about how they still get to break revenu reccords!!! IT DOESN'T MATTER if all us fans decide to rally and write a letter each to all studio execs, we are insects in their movie income statistics!!! So all we do here is have fun talking and arguing about stuff we're fans of. And so far YOU'RE the ONLY one that's been complaining on this thread as well as on the superman cameo thread. So, have some chicken, get some sex, drop a turd and then you'll feel much much better, and then you'll finally be able to join in on our fun without loosing all your hair or dying of a heart attack.

Now, back to the [frick]ing topic, after hearing this news, logically, what do you think a multi billion dollar company will do next??? Of course they're gonna put out the Superman movie ASAP!!! But do you honestly think they'll waste years just to find an unknown??? DO THEY HAVE THE TIME??? NO!!!!! They logically get whoever is the most popular thing at the moment... WORTHINGTON!!! They reboot the franchise to make it more action packed this time but with a big gunn!!! It might not be Worthington but it will be someone big!!! With this judgement, they have no choice but they'll want to make the most money possible out of this. So since we don't know about who Hal will be but we know they've been talking to a bunch of actors, it's logical to think that Superman will be one of them. Routh's contract is done! I'd like him to return as much as all of you but the reality is that they will reboot the franchise. And they WON'T use the same damn actor for it! It's logic, not rocket surgery.

LEE: wow, so because i dont like DC comics im not ALLOWED an opinion. You dont happen to be wearing a Nazi uniform and a swastika flag outside your house do ya? you dont even read current comic books so its you who doesnt know what you're talking about when it comes to comic book movies!

ASSASSIN666: are you really comparing The Hulk to The Dark Knight!?!

Rorschach01: no, what im saying is that Singer went way overboard with all that stuff instead of making a decent superhero film - look at Watchmen. that made political statements etc but still managed to have some great action. Singer just spends too much time with an agenda instead of making a decent film to go along with his message.

Hey shaman, I just posted this elsewhere that d.c should start it's own studio and regain some control over its property like marvel did. You should realize that it's these jerk-off studios that are killing these movies. What marvel did with iron man should serve well as an example to all. That's my point and you should have known that without me telling you.

I actually get ASSASSIN666's Hulk/TDK comparison too! Obviously we are talking very different levels of class, but Hulk tried to do what TDK succeeded in doing. Ang Lee wanted to make a cerebral, thought provoking comic book movie with action too of course. He [frick]ed up, prob because he picked a character like the Hulk to do it with! But i still maintain that movie is every bit as good as Incredible. Those movies combined would be the perfect Hulk movie. (minus the Hulk pooches though!)

But Josh, they were decent movies! Hell they were great movies! Your reasons for thinking they were not is clearly because there was not enough action..and there was plenty of action! These are stories for Gods sake! Action is great, its exiting, but it should only ever serve a good story, not the other way around. Would you honestly have preferred the X movies to have been like Transformers 2?

Man i am good! I can get a dig in anywhere!

StephenStrange

Well this may or may not be a good thing. If they rush another flick out there and it turns out to be mediocre or something like that, this badly timed money grab will have hurt things and not helped.

I have something else to say and I am almost afraid to. When Superman Returns came out I watched carefully everything that followed. I read reviews and checked out fan comments all over the web from IMDB to Myspace to CountingDown.com and from all that I observed something very important.

If you were to list all the problems the fans had with the movie, it would be and extremely long and highly varied list. It wouldn't be like 3200 people said they didn't like the dialogue, 7000 said they were bothered by the fact that Singer hired an actor that is gay, and 2976 people didn't like the Superkid.
You could make generalized categories of course but the quality of what people were saying was such that it was not just one or two main things, it was millions and millions of different little things.

Did you guys know that there is an entire anti Singer blog and web site devoted to haranguing WB?? It was started by a Hollywood insider that has this asinine obsession with Tom Welling! Now how weird is that?

What all this amounts to ultimately is that it is quite possible that nothing any director does will be right. And no matter what, no movie will be able to make every fan happy. Now that the Wolverine craze has died down a little bit, Superman has gone back to being the world's most popular comic book character and it may well be that no film will ever be able to satisfy every fans disparate interests and individual take on the character.
And if legal issues forces Warner Bros to rush out a sequel or a reboot, there might be a day sometime in the near future where we might actually see someone say that Singer's Superman was better.

ASSASSIN666- Yes i did get what your point was and god knows do i EVER agree with you on that!!! Goes whithout saying! BUT, MY point was that you come here and rant about how you can't believe how stupid we are for talking about all this on here and not doing something about it. OBVIOUSLY, NOTHING can be done!!! Reality and logic itself kinda get in the way dude. You should know that without me telling you. If DC ever got WB out their anuses, IT WOULD BE AN OUSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!! But it will NEVER happen!!! Go knock on WB's door and ask them politely if they could concider NOT wanting to make money... Do you see how idiotic and pathetic it would be??? So what we do with our time, what we choose to discuss and the manner in which we choose to do it is beside the point!!! We're all hear to have fun with what we're passionate about and not you or anybody else should criticise us for it. By your own opinion, YOU are wasting YOU'RE time here when YOU could be writing letter, after pathetic letter, after idiotic letter, after meaningless letter and so on and so forth!!! It's insignificant!!! So let's strap ourselves in, relax and enjoy the ass rape. It CAN be enjoyable if we make the most out of it. Hell most comic book movies ARE even though by fanbase standards they suck. Then, we can all have fun talking about afterwards.
