My Take on Brandon Routh Continuing His Role of Superman

Here is "My Take" on Routh's recent comments on putting on the tights once again.

"Superman Returns" star Brandon Routh was recently interviewed about slapping on the Superman tights once again for the next installment of the franchise.

My take is to keep him on board because he is the new Superman and at certain angles, he scarily looks like Christopher Reeve too.

The terrible film that was "Superman Returns" was not Routh's fault, in my personal opinion because he was a solid Superman/Clark Kent, but it was just a bad story and product that was put together by director Bryan Singer (who also helped write the it).

Not to mention the huge amount of pressure that was probably put on Singer's shoulders by both Warner Bros. and DC to make the film a success.

Now enter DC film superstar Christopher Nolan, who has rebooted the Batman franchise in a way no one thought imaginable. It will have hands on involvement with everything regarding the next Superman film.

Nolan needs to take the next Superman and give it that realistic feel that he has been able to do with both Batman films, plus add a ton of action to Superman, as well as giving it a little bit darker tone because Superman's character needs to be addressed with his battling his two personae.

If there is anyone that can pull off a successful reboot of a reboot it is Nolan. He should still consider Routh for his lead because the guy just looks like Superman when he wears the uniform.

Sorry, but I disagree. We need someone new to this genre. We need a big and bulky Superman. I've always envisioned an Alex Ross Superman and Jon Hamm as the Man of Steel.

I disagree.

"as well as giving it a little bit darker tone because Superman's character needs to be addressed with his battling of his two personas."

Why does it need to have a dark tone to deal with his two personas?

Also, making it more realistic goes against the whole idea of Superman. How exactly can you make a movie about an alien that has super strength, flight, heat vision, invulnerability, and super speed more realistic? If there's one character that should NOT be realistic, its Superman.

I do agree that there needs to be more action, but i wouldn't hold my breath. Nolan is known for NOT putting in enough action. and when he does put in action scenes they are usually very unimpressive. i hope i'm wrong about that though.

It's not going to happen. I seriously can't wait until we get the announcement of who's playing Superman. Then maybe we'll stop hearing about every god damn interview where Routh is asked about Superman. And then people will, hopefully, move on.

Tahmoh Penikett for Superman.
CornDogBurlar@ Nicely put. Superman is about hope so it can't be overly dark and gritty.

I love that picture there with Routh in space and earth in the background. Just pure awesome! I am all for Brandon Routh to return and make his acting and the character justice which he can, given the chance. I hope this will be the case but most probably not.

The new Supes movie can be dark but only in the sense that the world and atmosphere is dark and Superman is the light contrast! He is the candle of light in a world of darkness.

Brandon Routh just didn't do it for me.....This sounds wierd but when I think of an actor who can play Superman I want to see someone who can take command and have a voice that is to be heard...Routh just didn't do that for me he does however look the part and maybe it was the director holding him back but I'm just not all about it.

I agree. Let's keep the one good thing from the franchise. Let's not make Superman like The Hulk, and have a different actor for every movie. If not than (I know I'll get kicked for this) carry over the big three from Smallville: Welling, Durance, Rosenbaum. All three do a great job.

@captainpresley I think Welling has the look just not sure about the acting.

I think Welling or Routh is capable with Team Nolan at the wheel. Even Chris Reeve gave Welling his stamp of approval.

Routh was NOT a "solid" Clark Kent/Superman. He barely had any lines in Superman Returns. Not only that, but who cares if he looks a bit like Chris Reeve at a certain angle, looking like that guy has NOTHING to do with being a good SUPERMAN. Chris Reeve is NOT the saving-grace of Superman actors. I look a bit like Chris Reeve in real life, doesn't mean I'd make a good Superman though. [frick] brandon routh. Dude can't act.

At this point I could care less about who's playing Supes. I trust Nolan to pick the right actor that he believes will be able to carry his vision of The Man of Steel.

ROUTHBOOT!!! ALL THE WAY!!! [frick] yeah! this is were nolan can tie in the dc universe were he can bring green lanter and all to make DC the best comic adaptaion movie maker! also i love his batman films there my favirote movies of all time, but he needs to do another batman movie without bale (there has to be some one out there that can be a better batman) also mainly for they can tie in the DC universe and not to be soooo realistic! because this elimanates alot of things weve grown to lvoe in comics. superpowers!!! etc.
thetrubatman14
thetrubatman14 - 8/21/2010, 2:57 PM
also why cant nolan do 2 takes of batman! this series that is going on can be a very realistic take on batman and then after he is done with this series he can do a diffrent take. a more comic book take on it, still realistic but not as realistic as his present franchise. something that can work within the dc universe and bring togerther the justice league. every comic book adaption should be realistic with a modern twist to it and a little superpowers through in, but make everything that is unrealistic look and feel realsitic as if hey why cant that happen? or that could work. NOLAN IS GONNA SAVE THE COMIC BOOK MOVIE GENRE! started with batman, now the man of steel! ROUTHBOOT!!!! (also there has to be someone else to protray the next batman)

Do we have to talk about Brandon Routh? I just recently saw him in Scott Pilgrim VS. The World. I can tell you right now that there is no way in hell he'll ever play a good enough Superman. Superman Returns was a third-rate movie with Routh as a second-rate superman in a second-rate superman suit.
The man is more convincing as an evil psychic-powered vegan than he is the man of steel.

Look, way I see it is only going to be "darker" because it'll have some actual themes to it, some of them real world issues.

I'd be happy if we got a modern Superman;
* Clark (!!!) is the real person
* Lex is a genius scientist who built and is CEO of Lex Corp
* Prehaps introduce some different POV on whats necessary to help the world ie Lex and Superman
* Superman has actual super powered villains like Brainiac and Metallo
* Lois is an intelligent and skilled report who believes in reporting the truth no matter what and is not damsel in distress

AND on personal wish list - NO Undies.
Akercocke
Akercocke - 8/21/2010, 9:10 PM
Having Nolan on board doesn't necessarily mean a "darker" Superman. That worked with Batman because the nature of the character demanded it. Superman isn't a dark character, it's a mistake to assume a movie is better just because it's "darker", Nolan is very smart, he'll see through the obvious and find a way to make Superman work and add some depth to the character, not just dark stuff. That being said, I'd like to see Brandon getting another chance so people can see what a bad director Singer really is. If he doesn't, I'm sure Malambri or Manganiello can make it work, but honestly Brandon is the better actor.

@Akercocke- No, Brandon isn't a better actor. He sucks in every role he's ever been in. I wouldn't even say he's a second-rate actor...i'd say he's more of a third-rate. He has ZERO charisma...ZERO dialogue and only gets by because people thinks he resembles Reeve. If he wants to be Superman so badly, he'll have to actually FIGHT for the role this time...last time it was handed to him not based on his acting talent but based solely on his supposed resemblance to Reeve. But I'd rather Routh stop being so damn selfish and just step aside and let someone else be Superman. And yeah I will agree Bryan Singer is a horrid director.

SupermanReturns2 - 8/21/2010, 11:31 PM
Routh can thrive with a better story and stronger director. The fact he nailed Clark Kent as a modern guy, I loved. He was better with his Clark, in some respects, than Reeve;(the subtle jealousy shown when Lois introduces her "boyfriend", priceless!)

LP4 - 8/21/2010, 11:46 PM
@SupermanReturns2- Routh did NOTHING better than Reeve. He imitated Reeve...and yet somehow Reeve was still way better. The whole film was just a 3 hour love letter to Richard Donner. I say- dump Singer, dump Routh and all the other losers in that piece of shit film and reboot completely from scratch. If Routh is still in the reboot, people will connect it to Superman Returns. And this film must have NO connection to it, otherwise it won't sell many tickets. A lot of people are still pissed with what Singer did to Superman. Basically raped the Superman character on the big screen.

@Superguy1591- I agree with you. But sadly about 85% of the people on this site, believe it is more important to cast a guy who looks like Reeve than it is to cast a guy who actually looks like SUPERMAN. I hate how people put Reeve on a higher pedestal than the actual Superman character when it comes to casting. I can't wait for the next "genius" to come in here and start chanting "ROUTHBOOOOOT"

@superguy1591 - That actually looks a tad bit more like superman. if he was younger by about ...what, ten years? Plus if that guy had a slightly thicker hairline....then hell yeah, he could get the part.

"Reintroduce the character. When I say reintroduce the character I do not mean get another Reeve look alike, I mean get a guy that looks like Superman. Casting a guy that looks like Reeve is not casting an unknown, it's trying to cast Christopher Reeve."

@SupermanReturns2- Yeah I see that picture of Routh. But it just doesn't scream "SUPERMAN" to me anymore. I HAD faith in Routh...but in some scenes, his acting just seemed so rigid and wooden as if he was reading the lines straight off the card and it shouldn't be like that when you're an actor. It should be more smooth and natural. Routh isn't Superman. Wake up.
