Margot Kidder's agent released a statement back in May revealing that the iconic Superman: The Movie actress had died peacefully in her sleep at home, aged 69. However, the truth has now been revealed and it's sadly a little more tragic. It's no secret that Kidder has been battling mental illness problems since a young age and she's faced a lot of issues over the years, including being homeless at one point.
A statement released by Park County coroner Richard Wood explains that Kidder's death was a result of a "self-inflicted drug and alcohol overdose" and her daughter Maggie McGuane followed that up by saying, "It’s a big relief that the truth is out there. It’s important to be open and honest so there’s not a cloud of shame in dealing with this." She went on to stress that those struggling with their mental health need to ask for help in order to avoid something like this happening to other people's families.
Kidder was obviously best known for playing Lois Lane across four Superman movies and she remained a vocal supporter of the DC Universe, appearing in two episodes of Smallville and saying she would be open to starring in a current DC TV show if given the opportunity. The actress was also vocal in praising Amy Adams' take on the character but making it clear she deserved a bigger role in Man of Steel.
