TMNT Co-Creator Peter Laird Clarifies He Thinks Michael Bay's Planet of Turtles is Awful

The other day I reported that Peter Laird had thought Bay's alien race idea for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could be genius, but I and many other writers did not pick up on his sarcasm. Peter also discusses rumors that Krang is the villain.

I apologize, the other day I and many other people misinterpreted Peter's response to Michael Bay as though he thought the alien race idea could be good, but that was inaccurate. Since then Peter has received many comments that verify the miscommunication. And that is when Peter felt compelled to clarify what he meant and end the confusion for good.

Peter's reply to a commenter that felt Peter was in favor of a planet of turtles.
"Did you really get out of what I wrote that I in any way, shape or form LIKE the idea of a planet of Turtles? If so, I guess I have to re-think how I express myself."

"Just so it's absolutely clear -- I think a planet of turtles is not, in and of itself, a bad idea for some kind of science fiction/fantasy story. But as a way to explain any aspect of the backstory of TMNT, I think it is awful and unnecessary."

"Of course, we have no idea at this point if the plan is to have a planet of Turtles. It's probably a good idea to wait and see." -- PL

Peter responds to a commenter that said, "Michael Bay has a terrible habit of taking franchises and properties (IE Transformers) and turning them into utter crap."
"I don't think anyone outside of Michael Bay and the people working on this premise know exactly what he meant when he said "these Turtles are from an alien race"... and until we DO know exactly what that means, it is hard to get behind a specific argument against it."

"Also, I have to take issue, gently, with the notion that you and others have expressed, a notion summed up in your quote."

"He may have made "Transformers" movies which are not to your taste, but he hasn't turned the properties themselves into "utter crap". I have no particular interest in "Transformers", but it seems to me that -- like TMNT -- it will be around for a long time, well after Michael Bay's involvement with it is done." -- PL

............................

I asked Peter if he could give his opinion on the rumor that Krang might be the villain in Michal Bay's film. More specifically, if he thought Krang could work in live-action.

"Almost anything can be made to "work" in a movie... the more important question is whether it can be made to work WELL. I have a pre-exisitng antipathy toward the character of "Krang" -- I felt he was overused in the original cartoon -- so I am probably not the best person to ask this question of... because even if "Krang" could be made to work well in a new movie, I wouldn't really want to see him." -- PL

"Utter crap"... yea! that about sums up everything Bay touches.
Do you really need the "Alien Explanation" for everything?

I am now officially tired of this story. I'm glad these people are relevant again but I'm tired of it all. I am now officially rooting for Michael Bay. I'm willing to give him a chance, people may not like his Transformers movies, but the bottom line is they are a hell of a lot of fun to watch, and here's the kicker, A TON OF PEOPLE GO SEE THEM.

If he can get half the people that are interested in his Transformers movies interested in the Turtles again I say why the hell not. It's not like any of these "hardcore fans" made the last movie a success. Everyone needs to quit their bitching and reserve judgement until we at least see a trailer. Plus if they are from a different dimension I am all for it. As long as they look like Turtles, live in NYC, trained by splinter and have the same personalities I am all for it, and could care less where they come from.

agree with u guy above
but i think april shud be in it! if anything she shud be the only human talking to the turtles no one else! ...not no shia labouf type of thing...but talking!! kinda like in the original but less!
but i totally agree with u to have sum type of batman begins origin feel to it! how they went from turtles to ninjas...their style..and weapons of choice i like that! and i agree wit splitter training them of course giving them names! and giving them the banana and mask with a meaning behind the color... but we know BAY/guy who made battlefield aint going to do that!...

@RidiculousFanBoyDemands

and we CAN NOT have no transformers story line though...them coming to earth first protecting a kid yet the planet..that cant happen we dont want to see a kid having contact with the turtles like i said the only person who should have contact with them is april like in the original but less! she should be the ONLY! person!! no one else!!

@Gnyah123

I don't think he is going to rehash a transformers story line. There will be no "Shia LaBeouf" character. I for one give the guy credit, he has directed some quality flicks (The Rock, Bad Boys, The Island). He can tell a quality story. With Transformers he knew what the fans wanted, giant effing robots kicking the crap out of giant effing robots. He got away from that in the second one, but the first and third are tremendous to watch. Plus he is only PRODUCING it, he is not directing it. I think this movie will be fine. The only reason the creators are speaking up is FINALLY they are relevant again and people want to hear what they think. They actually have Michale Bay to thank for that. What were they doing prior to Michael Bay taking over this franchise? The answer is nobody cared.

i swear this means they have to change the title to Teenage ALIEN ninja turtles? coz theyre not mutants anymore. i hate this shitty twist that adds nothing to the story, and just ruins the characters.
Gnyah123
Gnyah123 - 3/23/2012, 12:25 AM
yea first and third transformers were pretty good he didnt even WRITE them he directed the movies so i blame the writer for messing up transformers...well the second one of course...he did a good job directing it
and i know hes producing it but still..jst dont think its a good idea but like dude said above..jst wait until we get a teaser..or a poster...or more information about this reboot before i can say more
but if he DOES rehash the the transformers line wit a different human which i hope not..then i will be upset like i said the only person who shud have contact with the turtles is april! no one else

Exactaly like I said the other day, just because Bay said "these Turtles are from an alien race" doesnt actually mean that they will be aliens.

Maybe Bay misspoke or maybe he meant they will be alien to normal turtles; not that they will be space aliens.

The whole mutagen ooze was the most original/interesting part!

I agree totally man. They should have anonymity from the world save for April and Casey Jones. (Casey was my favorite growing up, especially in the first movie). I was always a Casey Jones Raphael fan.

Sorry seems to me like he's made his opinion known, seen that thy TMNT fans didn't like what he said and now he's back tracking.
Bay is gonna cock this up, krang shouldn't be in it because u know bay is gonna put his own spin on it and its gonna look utter shit.
After seeing immortals and 300, zack Snyder could make this work better.

Like Laird says, you try to put a character looking like that in a movie and who the hell is gonna want to see it?

@RidiculousFanBoyDemands - Well said, some of these fanboys really need to grow up and move on! The worse things about geeks is that they hold onto everything that they liked as a child and put it on a pedestal without ever looking back at it with adult eyes to see how fraking retarded it actually was.

The 80's Transformers cartoon and concept was stupid as hell and the TMNT cartoon compared to the original comic was ridiculously dumbed down and kiddie-fied! If Bay can oversee the level of improvement the did to Transformers to this project it will be a huge success.

BTW.. Transformers 1 & 3 were outstanding entertainment, the 2nd movie was a total mess, and he was responsible for writing most of that due to the writers strike at the time.
