Early screenings for The Flash have been taking place since April, making it nigh-on impossible for social media-savvy fans to avoid spoilers. We'll be taking a deep dive into them here, though, so read on at your peril!
In the movie's closing moments, the Scarlet Speedster comes to the realisation that no matter what he does, Batman and Supergirl will die during the final battle with General Zod. To save them and the world, he allows his mother to die and restores the original timeline (which still has a different Batman for some reason).
Original plans called for Michael Keaton and Sasha Calle to remain part of the DCEU, with Ben Affleck's Dark Knight trapped in a desolate reality which would set the stage for Crisis on Infinite Earths.
The versions of Batman and Supergirl we meet in The Flash now remain dead and gone, but director Andy Muschietti has addressed the Girl of Steel's shocking fate in an interview with Deadline.
"Well, the great thing about Multiverse is that Supergirl lives in a million other timelines, right?" the filmmaker said. "So, nobody should...I mean, I don’t wanna spoil it, but whatever happens to Supergirl in this movie should not be taken as the absolute truth."
Muschietti added, "We can see Supergirl, this Supergirl, Sasha Calle, in future projects. We might, because that’s how the Multiverse works. It’s clearly explained by Bruce Wayne. It’s like spaghetti."
An argument could be made that using the Multiverse in this way lessens the stakes to the point where nothing really matters. That's arguably demonstrated by the way Batman is used in The Flash, but there's a positive side to these comments which can't be ignored.
It appears, in Muschietti's eyes, that the door remains open to Calle playing Supergirl again in the DCU. Considering the fact she's received universal praise for her performance, the possibility she could return in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is very exciting. We'll see if DC Studios agrees.
The Flash arrives in theaters on June 16.
