Director Kenneth Branagh Talks Thor

While taking a short break from the Thor movie set, Kenneth Branagh answered a few questions about his experiences in the worlds of acting and directing; inevitably, the God of Thunder was brought up...

During a recent Q & A with Kenneth Branagh, the critically acclaimed actor and director was asked what kind of research he did to prepare himself to helm Marvel Studios' comic book adaptation Thor and what he feels about the tone of the film.

"Well, you realize of course that if I told you this I would have to kill you [laughs].. I have to be a bit tediously diplomatic about it because it is a work still in progress, but I can answer the first part. Thor from the Marvel comics, you'll know better than me, I think started in 1961-62 and there have been vast changes in the way the character has been presented. Marvel raided, in a brilliant way, the Norse sagas.. and so my research has been to acquaint myself with both things; the Norse myths and all of the Marvel comics, basically.

"My reading on a daily basis is literature from 870 AD and Jack Kirby and Stan Lee circa '67 as well.. And maybe that heads towards a tone that, we're discovering, honors both of those sources. "

Kenneth Branagh is THE perfect choice of director for this. His blend of classic and modern storytelling will be a beautiful fit for the God of Thunder.

This is really no less than I expected from Branagh, and I'm quite happy to hear he's using both the sagas and the comics to draw on for inspiration. Nearly everything we've heard so far about this project has been a positive in my eyes.

I think there's some kind of superhero dancing fetish. That reminds me, I saw Iron Man II last night. 8/10! It's a little bit more serious, pacing in the middle was slightly off, and the end fight was kind of short. Still really good. I enjoyed it as much as the first.

I have no doubt that Branagh is the right guy to direct Thor! Hell, everything from the look of the costume, the leaked Destroyer picture and to what was in the Iron Man 2 after credit scene looks pretty much 100% faithful to the comic books! I just cant wait until Comic Con because I have a feeling that will be when we get to finally see some footage! :)

I really like how he's approaching this. It sounds like it will be quite awesome. I'm not that familiar with the beginnings of Thor so I'm curious to see how much of the movie will take place on Asgard and how much will be on Earth.

I cry a little when I come here. I try and leave pieces of me where I can, because is oozes with coolness. Yet I fear that I defile it too, making me feel conflicted.

So: he's doing classic "Thor" comics mixed with the actual myths? You see: that kind of vision is what makes him perfect for this. A lot of directors wouldn't combine the two in the way that he's wanting to do.
