Kenneth Branagh says that ‘Thor’ casting is in ‘Final Stages' and addresses the decision process!

Thor director releases new information on deciding to cast Thor but keeps quiet over who will actually weild the thunder god's hammer..!

While there’s still some uncertainty about exactly when the Kenneth Branagh-directed “Thor” will be hitting theaters, there’s even less know about who will be wielding the mighty hammer Mjolnir on the big screen. There’s been no shortage of casting rumors and teases from various actors and “Thor” filmmakers, so when Branagh dropped by MTV to discuss his PBS miniseries “Wallander,” we had to throw in a few questions about that other little project on his plate.

“We’re down to the final stages of it,” Branagh told MTV News of the “Thor” casting timeline. “The reason one has to be properly diplomatic, is simply that some talented peopled have been patient, kind, creative and really committed to working with us in this process.”

“My reluctance to say anything about it is simply out of respect for people who have been extremely respectful of us,” continued Branagh. “That said, I think we are extremely close and I hope to announce a decision sooner rather than later.”

As for what qualities would make the perfect Thor, Branagh maintained his diplomatic stance, explaining that the must-have traits of the film’s title character were a group decision — a very big group’s decision, in fact.

“There’s a massive fan base out there of devotees, enthusiasts and real experts who have all the answers to that,” said Branagh. “All I can say is that I bare all of that in mind with my Thor education. I read a couple of comics across the years every day, I read the Norse legends and sagas, and [the lead role] needs to have something from all that’s great in the comics and the legends, and needs to live in our film universe.”

“It’s a whole series of things that I could list, but I’m not going to, because I’d have to kill you,” laughed Branagh.

Branagh offered a similarly appreciative, yet noncommittal response when asked if he was aware of some of the various online campaigns for the lead role — including the much-publicized petition for actor James Preston Rogers to play Marvel’s God of Thunder.

“I am aware of certain campaigns, and I think everyone is grateful for them and knows that there is a great anticipation,” said Branagh. “We have every intention of doing everything humanly possible to live up to that anticipation.”

What do you think of Branagh’s “Thor” casting comments? Who would you like to see in the lead role?

I am just curious as to how he is going to make Thor relate to the "real world" of the rest of the movies leading up to the Avengers. Most of the movies to this point have done a great job at making us believable these characters could exist in real life. With the whole "god" thing and all, just hope he can pull it off. That being said, I have faith that Branagh has the chops to make it happen.

He'll wait for the San Diego Comic Con to announce and bring the hype machine to full capacity. GL as well. They won't give anything solid till July.

I definitely hope they use Mjolnir and not that piece of crap from the Ultimates. That blasphemious hammer is a big pile of BS.

Karl Urban would make a good Thor. Didn't he have blond hair in Lord of the Rings?

Yeah I never really cared for the hammer that Ultimate Thor has either but I like Ultimate Thor.

BRANAGH!!! UNKNOWN AS THOR AND NOT ULTIMATE AN YOU'VE GOT A EPIC MASTERPIECE IN THE MAKING!!! ; )

yeah Bohemiben thats Ultimate Thor. He actually is a God but his team mates think hes just a crazy hippie! Its a good take on the character because you get the best of both worlds..literally! Id say they will probably mix both versions, because i cant imagine classic Thor flying about with the other characters..i just dont think it would work in a movie.

ironknight, yep he was blond as Eomer. I think he would be good too. At least, i have yet to hear anyone suggest better.

Ror- I think you are right in the sense that they will probably have him as a mix between the Ultimate Universe and the Main Universe. I know for the Avengers movie they want to keep it as real as possible but for Thor, unless they go the ultimate route, it is going to be tricky.

Alexander Skarsgaard is better. (Boy is my face getting blue)

But I'll take Urban. Especially since everyone is raving about his Bones portrayal. Either way I'm cool. JPR can SMD.

ironknight27 @ Dude if they go with that stupid a$$ Ultimate lame green peace version! They can forget it!!!

I personally think BRANAGH has the balls to do the real MIGHTY THOR!!! (Not a watered down mixed version either).

THOR has a rich history, why would he sh!t on it with that crap!?!? : D

THORS gotta have he's helmet (they can easily make it cool).

THIS MOVIE NEEDS TO BE EPIC!!! ; )

TOBUTTICA - IRONKNIGHT27

I'm with ya! Give us the real Mjolnir!!! But like IRONKNIGHT said, i dig the "hippie" Ultimate Thor better.

Don't see why it would be a problem, all these movies seem to be a blend of the original and Ultimates...

Leee think about it foe a second..a movie needs to be done differently than a comic. You could swallow classic Thors Shakespear talkin ass in a comic..but picture it in the Avengers movie surrounded by the other characters..it would SUCK, people would think they were watching a parody. Thats why Ultimate Thor makes more sense..or at least a variation on it. I agree they should try to stick to the classic look as much as possible but i dont want to hear one single "thee" or "thy" from his gob in the same movie as Sam Jackson!
ironknight27
ironknight27 - 5/12/2009, 2:43 PM
LEE777 - Thor does have a rich history and if they wind up doing the marvel universe thor I think visually it would be awesome. I just do not see them using that for the Avengers movie if they say that they want to keep it as real as possible. I truly hope they keep Thor as close as possible to the 616 Thor.

This article was an absolute waste of time. You've presented NOTHING NEW OR OF ANY VALUE. We already knew this information. Stop bringing up that James Preston Rogers guy. He's a nobody and i'd be willing to bet Branagh would rather hang himself than even consider that tool. He cant even act. I'm done with this shit.

isn't the Ultimate Thor and classic Thor's powers and origen very similar?

I do think the classic is better, but minus the goofy auld anglish.
ironknight27
ironknight27 - 5/12/2009, 2:55 PM
@DarthMulder- They have not really explained fully Ultimate Thor's origin but from what I understand they are similar. Except I think that the classic thor maybe more powerful. The reason I think this is because in the ultimates they managed to take Thor's belt off and suddenly he had no powers. I do not think that Classic Thor had this problem

i'd love karl urban to rock asgards world. i think they have to go with the ultimates route to blend in the other characters, but i'm sure they said majority of the movie is in asgard so i'm just curious to how they will get him from asgard to earth.
would love to see him ranting and raving like in the ultimats tho, saying he's a god. has anyone seen the two marvel animation films of the avengers, thor kciked ass
ironknight27
ironknight27 - 5/12/2009, 3:16 PM
@Bohemiben- The powers were not in his belt but when the belt was taken from him for some reason he lost his abilities. I think Loki was able to screw with his ablilities when the belt was taken off. It was never really explained from what I can remember.

RORSCH @ Im thinking about it, an ULTIMATE THOR sucks so does SLJ's ULTIMATE FURY!!! Heh heh heh! : D

Okay im joking..... not lol. I know what you mean, an i ain't got a problem if they wanna change the way THOR speaks, that's cool, as long as like IRON MAN it feels like the real THOR we all love, an for that to happen we need the CLASSIC Hammer & Helmet!!! Viking helmets look cool anyway! If he don't have it, it'll be like DARTH VADER without his, or BATMAN without his mask!!!

ironknight27 @ Good man!!! Like ironknight said it should be as much as possible the 616 (ugh) version!!! I'd rather just say the real, classic THOR myself!!! : D

Damn, ppl don't realise the ULTIMATE Lame Line was just there for movies later on!! It's bull crap to the max lol!

Now the MAX line, now there's a good line of stories an characters!!! ; )

Yes, i believe you two have mentioned your feeling towards ol Wolverine origins once or twice before!

Leee youl be pleased to hear that the Ultimate line is prob no more! Ultimatum killed off a shit load of characters and the end of Ultimates 3 is rumored to be the end of the line for it.
