POLL: THOR/Green Lantern Trailers

POLL: THOR/Green Lantern Trailers

With all the hype surrounding the recent release of the THOR and Green Lantern trailers, I thought I would take the opportunity to ask the CBM readers a couple of questions and throw a POLL their direction.

Feature Opinion

Let me start off by saying this is not a VS POLL. Next year looks to be quite possibly the biggest year to date for CBM's. I for one, am greatly looking forward to all of next years films and I sincerely hope that all of them not only break box office records but receive multiple Oscars. This would help to ensure quality CBM's for many years to come. That being said, three films in particular seem to appear at the top of everyone's "must see list" Captain America: The First Avenger, The Green Lantern and THOR. Of these three films, two have released trailers that have not only raised considerable interest in the films but have drawn lines between the fans.

Weeks ago, when the first "official" Green Lantern trailer was released, we began hearing many of the "rabid fanboys" proclaiming at the top of their lungs that this film would crush any other CBM's in 2011. Yesterday, when the first "official" THOR trailer was released, we heard the same cries, proclaiming the same thing about THOR. This should not be an either/ or situation. It is not a competition (at least as far as we, the fans are concerned). The studio's may be in competition but we, as fans, should be pulling for both films. That is not to say that we should not have a favorite.

Now, lets get down to the point of this article. As I've said, this article is not about which movie will "crush" the other. This article is about the trailers. Which trailer piqued your curiosity the most? Which trailer do you think has the potential to pull "non comic book fans" into the theaters to see something they were previously not familiar with? In essence, which trailer do you think shows more promise for the film it promotes? Which one does it's job?

I am including both trailers below for you to view once again and help you decide which way you ultimately cast your vote.

thing is, thor doesn't look like a superhero. GL does. and that is why i am afraid for thor, although the supporting casting is well known and excellent actors. GL has reynolds...only.

Green Lantern looks like an awesome film. the trailer though, makes it appear like its gonna follow the same formula thats been around for a long time.
Guy is cocky.
Guy can't get girl.
Guy discover powers.
Guy defeats evil.
Guy then gets girl.

idk, i think the trailer doesn;t set the right tone for the film.
but Thor on the other hand......

it looks radically different than anything we have seen thus far from CBMs. its not like X-men where people who are born different are scorned. this guy is royalty!!!! this guy is arrogant and makes a fatal mistake. and his father takes him down a notch. this isn't a film about gaining powers. this is a film about getting them back.

when i saw the GL trailer in theatres with a friend, she decidedly called it "wierd."

idk. its just that i dont believe the trailer for GL is gonna do the film any justice.

Did everyone see the Green Lantern Trailer in Imax 3D? So much more impressing than seeing it on Youtube! Gave me goosebumps actually.
Saw the Thor Trailer at the movies (in 3D) yesterday. Didn't really blow me away, looked fairly cheap.

I think while GL might attract more non fans Thor is going to be a much better film. I think Thor might very well be Marvels best movie.

Personaly I think the Green lantern trailer is great. However, there is something about the Thor trailer that leaves you feeling you are witnessing something HUGE, something Mystical and quite possibly something that wasn't meant to be seen by the average person.

It may sound silly but the Thor trailer just seems larger than life to me. ;P

HAWKSBLUEYES, Thank you for saying what needed to be said about this contrived rivalry between the films. I agree that we should all just be glad that there are ANY CBMs out there to enjoy.

When I was younger, I'd have KILLED to see a comic book movie. But I and a lot of other fanboys were convinced that the medium was looked down upon by mainstream media and that we'd probably never see any. We would talk about how cool it would be to see an X-men movie or a Green Lantern movie, but we never thought that it would actually happen.

Then when Batman came out we were happy as pigs in slop; even with all the deviations from canon it was so exciting. If that movie came out today, the fans would tear it apart. That's not to say that we should simply accept ANY old CBM based solely upon the fact that it's a CBM, but I think that we shouldn't take them for granted. The fact that so many are being made really affirms our passion for comics as a legitimate media presence and I think that they should ALL be given a fair shake.

Chris Hemsworth is acting like THOR!!!!!!

Well both are teasers, so it is likely that the theatrical trailers will be much more impressive...hopefully.

For the time being, I say that Thor wins in both categories. It looks like it is based heavily on character rather than strictly action. It looks to be more of an epic than a comic book movie, and will likely deal with some rather exciting themes (paternal and fraternal relationships, redemption...) I think that its status as moreso an epic film will draw better to be honest.

Green Lantern may be a good movie, but if we look strictly at the first trailers, there is no comparison.

I have a good level of confidence in the Green Lantern movie, but at the end of the day, the Thor trailer just looked much better. That's not to say the movies themselves will be that way either; we've heard great things about Mark Strong's performance but seen very little of it, and Iron-Man 2 was looked much better in the trailer than it actually turned out.

Green Lantern doesn't look "bad", it has just has a few too many cheesy moments. Hal's two first jokes, and that nonsense about something "being just over the horizon"? I'm surprised someone actually wrote that down. The costume still doesn't look right, and the effects are just kinda okay so far. The important part of that sentence is "so far", but I can only judge what I have in front of me.

Thor however, looks like it might have that special quality. Hemsworth looks like a complete beast, and the designs for everything look fantastic. A new mix of sci-fi and mythology that is both loyal to the classic comics and innovative. The Destroyer caught me off guard. I was happy about it being in the movie, but didn't expect it be so freaking cool. In Thor, I see potential for something big. I just really hope the final product delivers.

thor trailer looks better than green lantern but when we talk which trailer will attract no cbm fan it green lantern because i t has one of major star blake livly and ryan reynolds

the green lantern trailer looked bad in every way i believe the movie is good and i said before the hal jordan history is complicated and you can't put the whole story in trailer so i still have a passion to watch green lantern movie but not the trailer

i don't like the jokes too and Blake lively looks hideous

it could have been better

Thor owns GL,going by the trailers.

I don't like the comic tone of GL(we already have had Iron man and green hornett)

I hope Marvel doesn't follow DC when it comes to the tone of Cap(If I see Steve Rogers cracking jokes, puking crappy cheezy one liners, its over for me. )
Steve Rogers is Legend,a Soldier not a stand up comedian as they made Hal jordan act like one.

frodo wears a cape too. that's the problem with thor. he is not like spiderman or superman. he looks like an ancient warrior. and to answer the poll, i think gl will attract more non comicbook fans because he looks like a superhero, but i am more hyped for thor...i prefer him over gl as a character.

@gibbyblaylock- Well said, good sir! I wholeheartedly agree!

The Thor trailer has a much more serious tone than the Green Lantern trailer, so I think this appeases the fanboys. The comedy showcased in the GL trailer seems to be aiming towards the parents, kids, and Ryan Reynolds fans, much like what the Green Hornet trailer is going for. But, I have no doubt that Thor will have some comic moments, and Green Lantern will be mostly serious when all is said and done. I, for one, am very excited about both of these movies, not to mention all of the other comic booky goodness that'll be on the big screen in 2011.

i chose thor and both, both seem to be awesome movies, and although THOR is my most anticipated, i gotta say i wonder how these results would look like if the THOR trailer hadn't just happend. but IMO thor trailer was better

marvel72 - 12/11/2010, 9:17 AM
thor all the way for many reasons.

1.the cast & director (blake lively no thank you she can't act, isn't very attractive & is totally the wrong choice for carol ferris)

2. marvel cinematic universe (thor is the next part in the build up to the avengers,as far as dc go they don't want to have a shared universe)

3.huge match ups i.e thor vs loki & thor vs the destroyer (green lantern vs hector hammond)

thor is gonna own the green lantern.

I watched the GL trailer with a non-comic fan and his first reaction was "the villains look kinda lame".
He went on to say "It just looks cheesy".

I'm very curious to see what what kind of numbers these films draw.

they both have a good chance, now i voted thor cause i'm just a thor fan and i know that i would go to see it over GL, but the thing is on non fans it depends...

GL looks like a good pop corn flick that seems to have some plot, and so would appeal to a lot of non fans that don't know a thing about comics and just want to baby sit the kids 4 a few hours

but then while thor seems to have a darker tone, non fans will want to see the rest of the MCU, it just depends on weather or not they even know that the MCU exists...

don't get me wrong i'll see both movies... and i think i'll probably like both... all of this just depends... but at least we'll find out in 2011!

Green Lantern would be on top for the simple FACT that it's kid friendly. The Trailer had humor and the music made the Trailer more intense which actually gave me goosebumps. & the movie is like spider man a hero gaining powers & were watching what he chooses to do with it. So Green Lantern will own probably.

But Thor is more for adult audience. The movie has drama between Father & son a kid wouldn't understand whats going on without action so when Thor on earth going to his journey getting his hammer back most of the time is just talking going on. kids aren't going to enjoy that. But to a comic fan we understand cause we have background knowledge on the character.

PLUS: Green Lantern is more known then Thor
Thor has alone been in too cartoon shows "The Super Hero Squad Show" & "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes" while Green Lantern has been out for a very long time

Hate to say it but GREEN LANTERN ACTUALLY OUT WEIGHS THOR.

I don't think anyone outside of these message boards is going to see Thor when it comes out. I mean it's awesome for us as comic book fans, but I don't think parents are going to take their kids to see a god beat up some doctors and body guards.

Destroyer looks pretty awesome, though.

lets put it this way Thor,GL and Cap are all drastically different which i would like to think would make these movies box office hits, but all 3 of them could easily fail, plus theres other big block buster movies coming out next summer so all of them will be competing not against each other but other established franchises so fingers crossed all three of them do good for the sake of comic books
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 12/11/2010, 9:35 AM
I beleive Thor has the fantasy element ala Lord of the Rings as well as the comic book, Mythology ( there are many, many, mythology buffs worldwide) as well as the space/science fiction elements all working in it's favor. Don't underestimate how many outside the comic community are familiar with the name Thor.

@aol2smoove LOOOOL thor was around way before GL was even created, thors part of history, nothing against GL but iron man had a guy who makes WEAPONS and enjoys doing it as the hero, yet i saw loads of kids and families watching it even more in the 2nd one, hopefully all the cbm's do good next summer, comic book character does not need to be KNOWN to be successful, you can take the most obscure idea and make it a hit, so why was the dark knight so successful it wasnt kid friendly at all it had total maniac as its villain and guys with half his face burned off yet it made TONS

with the green lantern i'm actually looking forward to seeing sinestro more than the hero.
AlternateNo4
AlternateNo4 - 12/11/2010, 9:43 AM
neither on 1, GL on 2. obviously i have a GL bias and i won't try to pretend otherwise... but i think both trailers were weak.

we all know the problems with gl's trailer, and it's that the real tone of the film isn't really coming across because they're using scenes from early in the script to fill in the audience on the origin story. i think it's the same with thor... besides the addition of the two AMAZING effects shots at the end (throw and smash), i don't see much that dispels the concerns i had from the original "leaked" trailer.

basically the action looks amazing but the drama looks less than compelling—hopkins seems small and his voice is thin and weak (is he dying at that point?), and hemsworth, while not stiff or dull, is flat—totally outclassed by his costars. maybe hemsworth's acting isn't being served well by the trailer format, and will work in the context of the full film, but we're only looking at trailers here.

i love the visuals but i see far too much of the depowered guy in flannel scurrying around earth like bruce banner. watching the trailer i'm concerned that too much of the finished film will be spent on getting the hammer back, and have thor being a snotty douchey prince. what if audiences feel the same and just don't LIKE him??

so as for non-comics fans i feel like GL has an edge. ryan is a likeable guy that fans will relate to, and blake has a built in fan base. thor is a jerk.

and he has no secret identity, so little kids can't pretend to have his powers like they would if they got a GL ring.

aol2smoove@ your argument automatically means that the Dark Knight shouldn't have done well, cause nobody is going to take there kids to see an insane clown kill a bunch of innocents :/. But wait!!!! TDR is the highest selling cbm of all time!! ahaha silly you :)

@Alternate hals a womaniser and cocky pilot thats real likeable dude, but the movies essentially going to be about him changing and becoming a better person same thing with thor, starts of a jerk becomes humble guy, another example tony stark the guys a top a hole yet he changes but not by much but people still loved it

@Intruder i have no idea how much his movies make, like i said i am going to watch both but thor is favourite character so i kinda find it annoying when people go that thor hasnt been exposed to people, the whole norse mythology existed before the creator of GL was born, thats my only problem with all these thor haters i am hoping both these movies do good in the box office

@AUTISTICSPIDER good point that's a different Batman is Batman who doesn't know who he is I'm talking mostly about how much knowledge people have when they go watch these movies most kids know green lantern hes been on more cartoon shows then Thor. Thor is just starting to get some limelight

@Ibz lol i get your point i would rather see Thor rather then GL but I'll see both since these are just trailers gotta judge the movie in a whole.
