Stellan Skarsgard On Playing Professor Andrews In Thor

Stellan Skarsgard On Playing Professor Andrews In Thor

In an interview with Collider, we hear Skarsgard speak for the first time about the character he will play in Kenneth Branagh's Thor..

We already knew that Skarsgaard's character would be aligned with Natalie Portman's Jane Foster in the movie from the trailers, but aside from that not too much info on his character(Professor Andrews) has been leaked. In an exclusive chat with Collider about many of his upcoming projects we learn a little bit more from the Swedish actor..

What was it like to be a part of a production as big as Thor?

SKARSGARD: I had a great time. I also had a great director there. Kenneth Branagh is one of the funniest directors on the set. You laugh a lot. He’s very skillful. We were also allowed to have rehearsals before we started, and discuss the writing and change the scenes. It felt like you were invited to a very nice collaboration. It’s another film done in the real world, where my scenes are.

Who do you play in the film and how does your character, Professor Andrews, fit in with the mythology of the story?

SKARSGARD: Me and Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings are doing research on strange atmospheric and space stuff going on in the sky in New Mexico. And then, we meet Thor.

Did you watch all of the Marvel movies to get ready for the film? Had you been familiar with the characters at all?

SKARSGARD: No, I haven’t [watched the movies]. That’s not the kind of homework I did. I’m not sure that would have helped. And, I was not familiar with Thor at all, when I started, but I became familiar. They gave me comic books and stuff, and [Kenneth Branagh] educated me.

What is your take on the popularity of comic book movies?

SKARSGARD: I don’t know, since I haven’t seen them. But, it’s something that is a part of modern mythology. Every culture has their myths that people are aware of and share. They vary throughout the ages, but in America, it’s those myths.

Not one CBM Stellan? For shame! Anyway, not a whole lot here but its nice to hear something about this Prof Andrews. Some fans believe that he will turn out to be a twist villain, or indeed another Asgardian in disguise. Skarsgard says nothing to give any credence to those theories here but then he wouldn't would he? What do you think?

The only thing that I hate about this great actor being in this movie is that the role hes playing doesn't interact with Hopkins or Feore....or do they... Anyhow, great stuff ROR!

Lee, sorry but Branagh's take on Thor has more in common with Ultimate than it does to classic! Its not one or the other of course, but its leaning...

Ror: I have to disagree with you on that thought. Outside of there being no Blake, I think it looks classic all the way. The look is classic (he has had a beard many times in the classic universe IBZ).

I'm not sure what would lead you to beleive it leans towards Ultimate Thor. I agree there are elements of both.

ROR @ Haha sure you actually seen the THOR trailer and seen a Ultimate Thor book, nah apart from BLAKE is pure classic and the real THOR!

Gonna be an awesome ride!

Guys, the look is only a very small part of it. The defining difference between classic and ultimate is the inclusion/exclusion of the earthly alter ego of Blake. In the film he will be Thor on Earth and in Asgard. I agree that the Asgard stuff is all classic, and we assume Thor won't be considered a nutcase..but you never know!

@Ror - you have a good point...
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 12/29/2010, 5:41 PM
ROR: Gotcha! The other difference is the nutcase situation. I realy sort of thought that was the best part of the Ultimates. Why would anybody beleive he was who he said, until they seen proof?

juggy4711 - 12/29/2010, 5:43 PM
Skarsgard makes a good point. I've never really thought of it like that before but Comics are like American Myths.

Who was the dumbass that designed Ultimate Mjollnir? It's like the bastard child of Beta-Ray Bill's weapon and the Executioner's Axe. It didn't even have the strap that allowed Thor to twirl the hammer over his head.

As for Stellan, I would have loved to see his version of Odin. Maybe they can slip him in for the sequel. :)

There has been times where there have not been a Dr. Blake in the original universe. I dont really see alot of things to link this movie to the ultimate universe.

When they had that Q&A session with Feige online i think, he said that those looking for a refrence to Donald blake will find it. I think the nutcase ultimate situation could work kinda cool actually. THOR gonna be beastly

I've heard a lot of crap being spewed about how Thor and Captain America are both being influenced by the Ultimate Universe. While both statements are utter bullshit, I think Thor being Ultimate is probably the most retarded claim of the two. I literally cannot find a single shred of detail that looks Ultimate influenced in Thor. The lack of Donald Blake could very well be because Dr. Blake has been rejected by an overwhelming number of writers for 616 Thor and is considered by many fans to be as dumb as the Joe Fixit persona for the Hulk.

Thought it a bit strange that an actor as good and as cool as Skarsgard should get a relatively minor role. There must be more to him than being a typical science bod.

We shall see...
FrankGarret
FrankGarret - 12/30/2010, 1:44 AM
I gotta disagree with ya ROR.

Donald Blake isn't going to be in it, sure, but that's pragmatic adapting. To have an actor play Blake is to risk diminishing Thor's role, or even out shinning the actor playing Thor.

Besides, this movie is ultimately about Thor journey as he lives among men and learns humility after being banished for his hubris. Ult Thor was a messianic archetype character.

Thor is going to be beating up frost giants, not protesting for wikileaks.

How can a guy from SWEDEN not be "familiar at all" with Thor? He probably just means the comics character, but it bugs me how he goes out of his way to make it clear he has no interest in comics or their movie adaptations. I can see Skarsgard holding the comics Branagh gave him to read like they were a used diaper.

Great actor, though.

I'm not a fan...and he seems like a subliminal asshole. All the little quips about Thor being a "small obscure film" and "in America it's those myths." Comics aren't only an American thing.
PartyHard
PartyHard - 12/30/2010, 6:15 PM
@StoOpidpenguinpro He never said Thor was a small obscure film, he said he likes to do small obscure films along with big movies like this. And all the superhero comics are most certainly an American thing. Other countries had comics, but superheroes were an American thing.
