UNLV graduates shoot Thor feature in Las Vegas neighborhoods.

Okay, no, this is not an article about Thor, the highly-anticipated Kenneth Branagh live-action adaptation of the classic Marvel Comics character, but it does feature the "God of Thunder."

Thor at the Bus Stop focuses on Thor's "existential funk" in the face of his own death. The God of Thunder wanders Las Vegas' suburbs getting into adventures while trying to stop the Midgard Serpent from destroying the earth.

The two filmmaking brothers behind the production, Jerry & Mike Thompson, are graduates of the UNLV film department, and they shot Thor at the Bus Stop after UNLV Associate Professor David Schmoeller agreed to pay for it. The "no budget" film was shot for under $10,000. Said Schmoeller:

"No good movie is ever made on a big budget. I noticed that especially when I was working on the lines. Every time I changed a word, it was less good than what they'd written, so I did it exactly according to the script."

The only star to appear in the film is the usually-mute half of the popular comedy-magic act of Penn & Teller, who describes his character as:

"A mild-mannered, Shakespeare-quoting, philosophic serial euthanasiast -- sort of a cute old Kevorkian."

First screened at the CineVegas film festival, Thor at the Bus Stop sold out both showings and is now playing at The Palms in Las Vegas.

@ColdStone- What if Thor cannot grow a beard ? "Oh the shame of Asgard" they would call him. "But wait there is an answer" thinkest Thor. So Thor invites his very hot Asgardian blondie girl with an embarrassingly copious amount of As$ hair to come over for some "drinks... a little hair of the dog, if you will." Then he talks her into "Sitting Upon the Throne of Thors Face". While doing so Thor yelled out, "Who's your Cosmic Cow Bit@h !?! " , and with a might heave he thorws ... lets just called her "Lady HairrBottom up into the sky. A terrible yelp could be heard throughout all of Valhalla because Thor had taken the advice of his "Ill-Famed" brother Loki, and had spread "Super Glue" made from a sacred rams horn all upon his righteous-eth Face... and Voil'a! Thor has a beard!!!....errm , well thats what i heard.

How are these people not getting sued for copyright infringement? Did they blow the $10,000 on securing the clearance rights from Marvel? I doubt it...

I wouldn't want to fool with Marvel or Disney's lawyers with the Thor moving getting ready to gear up.

@teabag/SCOURGE: Tea's right; Marvel can't copyright characters from Norse mythology. Basically, anybody can make a character named Thor as long as the unique Marvel elements are not attached, which are few. The costume has to be different and there can't be a Don Blake (or another human host, most likely), but beyond that most of the other elements are up for grabs: hammer, Asgard, rainbow bridge, Odin, Loki, etc. There are at least two other comic book versions of Thor that I know of...

In fact, comic companies can't copyright any characters that have common noun names either, like Wolverine, Lizard, etc. That is a big part of why many older comic characters had specific names like Black Panther, Green Arrow, Blue Beetle, Hawkman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc.

Look, this comic even mentions the Marvel Thor while soliciting a completely different Thor in comic form:

This painting depicts a Thor that is different than Marvel's, but he still has a hammer and a very comic-looking costume on:

The Thor in this Boris Valejo painting has the same helmet as Marvel's Thor, blonde hair (the Norse Thor was described as having red hair in the Poetic Edda) and a hammer. He looks like Marvel's Thor...just with less clothes. And, is that Goliath he's fighting? Civil War must have ripped off this painting, right?

@tea: Holy crap! It totally does! Green pants? Check. Orange chain mail? Check. Long blonde hair and a beard? Check. "Missing" left hand (it's covered by text so that counts)? Check.
