Despite strong competition, Thor: Ragnarok has managed to pass another milestone. After today, Taika Waititi-helmed movie will be the third Marvel Studios production to pass $800 million mark in 2017, joining Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863M) and Spider-Man: Homecoming ($880M). As for now, Thor: Ragnarok is the seventh highest grossing MCU movie, which is even more surprising considering the absence of Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark and a rather poor reception of The Dark World.
This could be enough for any other studio, but Walt Disney is a different beast, passing $5 billion mark worldwide in 2017. And technically Spider-Man: Homecoming is a Sony movie! Beauty and the Beast ($1.263B), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ($795m) and the Marvel movies (GOTG V.2, Ragnarok) definitely helped in this achievement. Plus, Star Wars: The Last Jedi hasn't opened yet!
Disney should easily repeat this trick next year with the help of Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Ant-Man & The Wasp, Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Incredibles 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, Mary Poppins Returns and other "smaller" productions. Upcoming years definitely won't be boring for Disney fans.
