Marvel Legends has released some pretty awesome products into their current line of prop replicas. First we got Iron Man's helmet, Cap's Shield, Star-Lord's Helmet and now the item we here at Rewind Replay have been highly anticipating, Thor's hammer, Mjolnir.
Standing 50cm's tall or just over 19 inches, that hammer is of impressive stature. It has a good weight for a product made mostly of plastic and some light weight vinyl. The handle is capped with a die cast metal pommel which adds some good balance to the hammer without over compensating for the massive size of the head. It also has a faux leather strap to place around your wrist whilst weilding the mighty hammer.
Featuring lights and sounds that are meant to simulate a raging storm being summond by Mjolnir, the hammer does a serviceable job of achieving this. Glowing blue from the etched runes on the tips of the hammer and continuenly crackling you can see what the designers were going for. This effect is best seen when in a dark room to truly appreciate the blue glowing effect.
There is a microphone to one side of the hammer that, upon saying phrases "Thor" or "Worthy" the face of the hammer gently glows with the Odin rune. The glow is quite dim and lasts mere seconds which is somewhat of a shame and the voice activation is somewhat hit or miss. This is a very cool idea but it was clearly an are some money was saved during development.
The hammer looks and feels great and its not until you prop it up on its febble and entirely plastic little stand that the weakness in its visuals become apparent. With the battery pack, On/Off switch and a series of plastic connector spots displayed in plain view whilst perched on it stand, Mjolnir loses much of its authenticity and it becomes quickly apparent that we may have paid a tad too much.
As always thanks for watching, why not
